Breast Clinic Referral

Hi, I’m 26 and on Friday i asked my doctor to refer me to the breast clinic. She did a breast check last week and said everything is fine. Then on friday just gone i asked her to check again as i could feel something on each breast in the same place. So she checked and said as they move freely under the skin and they are soft and smooth it feels like a fibroid or something. Anyway she proceeded to tell me that she isn’t worried and nor should i be… so i went home and that was that. After a bit of time at home i called the doctors back and asked them to refer me as i don’t feel the anxiety of it all will leave me until they have been checked properly. I have a bit of pain coming from the left breast but nothing overly painful. My breasts are quite large so I’m hoping it’s just that and the doctor was right. How long should i wait to go and see someone? And should i be told there and then if they suspect cancer? Now ive asked to be referred I’m terrified. My doctor said she didn’t feel the need to refer me… but i asked anyway. I’ve got myself in a mess now in case they do find something. What should i expect? I have one on each side, in near enough the same place. They move around under the skin, and feel smooth and fatty (i think) please help. Thank you xxx

Hello Kellyj09

This must be a worrying time for you, maybe you could call our free helpline and talk through your concerns with one of the staff who are there to support you.  The number is 0808 800 6000 and lines open again in the morning and normal hours are 9-5 weekdays and 10-2 Saturday.

I’ve also attached a link to our publication on what happens at a breat clinic appointment as this may help www2.breastcancercare.org.uk/publications/worried-about-breast-cancer/referral-breast-clinic-bcc70

With best wishes

Thank you June. I’ve had a look and it’s very informative. My anxiety is through the roof at the moment. Especially right before christmas :frowning: xx

I’ve got my appointment for christmas eve! So scared :frowning: xx

Hi Kelly, if your lumps are in the same place on each side I am sure there’s nothing to eorry about, it would be odd fir breast cancer to be symmetrical. I had mammogram screwing the was referred to the bread clinic so don’t know how they will treat you. At least you are going to be seem by someone who specialises in breast and not the gp who doesn’t specialise in anything!

I expect you will be examined, you may be referred for a mammogram or have one there. It’s like an x-rag but they clamp your boob between 2 metal plates to do it. A bit uncomfortable but not painful. I got my results within a couple of weeks then had to have biopsies / results in 2 days.

There is a bit of waiting, but you’re taking the right steps. Good luck x
