I had a unilateral mastectomy with a DIEP flap on December 30th. It was tough for awhile but really glad I made the decision. It looks quite nice and even bought a bikini top to wear after 15 years of a one piece bathing suit. Did not have my nipple replaced..just want to leave it alone. It is soft like my natural breast. Great result. Good Luck with whatever decision you make. Everyone is different.
I had MX and LD (back) flap reconstruction 3 weeks ago. Don't be worried about that as an option.... it is a big op, but I am completely happy with the result. Obviously, it's nippleless at the moment... but it really is a very realistic result.... and I like the fact that, because it is using tissue and muscle from my body, it really does feel like 'my breast'. It really doesn't feel, sensation wise, any different to the other breast. I poke it... and it feels like me! Obviously, it has a longer recovery time, but in the greater scheme of things....! x
HI GLB38. Sorry you've been so poorly and off work since jan.
Personally, I went back to work after a month, but I am still taking it easy and find it painful at times as I have developed cording down my arm and stomach.. But I didn't have rads like you will be. I've got some SEs from tamoxifen too, but it's doable!
But I haven't ridden my horse yet, and won't be for at least a week. She's not going to like the heavier weight on her back when I do!
I had small implant and LD flap, quite a big procedure as all of the skin from breast removed too, so more of an op than most people. All done at same time as emergency mx. I had my chemo and rads done before this though. I would definitely make a point of asking about the risks of having an implant before Rads take place, also if it would disturb (not really the right word) but hopefully you'll know what I mean, the previous recon surgery. I am pretty sure it can. I was back at work after 8 weeks and driving after about 4 weeks, my op was on the Right side. It looks great in clothes and a good match (not so good in reality) when unclothed. Implant part is fairly soft, and I have a great cleavage, which I never had before! Hope this is of some small help to you, write all your questions down as it is easy to forget while you are in the consultation.
