Re: Constipation

Hi all,

Having seen this thread I wondered if any of you have tried a recipe that has been on the forums for a number of years for 'Go cake' - it gets good results!  Here's the recipe:

GO CAKE"
4oz All Bran, 5oz sugar, 10oz mixed dried fruit (basically whatever is in the cupboard – use a nice mixture) – apricots, sultanas, cranberries etc, lots of chopped prunes for extra “GO”. ½ pint of milk 4 oz self raising flour. Put All Bran, sugar and fruit into a bowl, mix, add milk and allow to stand for at least half an hour (while you recover from the physical effort so far). Sieve in the flour, mix well and pour into well greased 2lb loaf tin. Bake in moderate oven (180 degree c) for about an hour, until a knife comes out dry. Cover with foil after 30 mins if its browning too much. Turn out of tin and cool. Serve in thin slices with butter as thick as you like it!

Once again, all credits to the ladies who have added to this thread making it an invaluable reference tool and thanks to Princess for starting it! Good luck and much love, xxxx

If you want to have a look at a thread that has been running for quite some years now, with hints and tips to help you through chemo, here's the link:

Re: Constipation

Hi Rosie, I had a similar problem, think it was the Oramorph and Ordansetron, I found Lactulose did the trick, took the first slightly larger dose, then followed up for a couple of days, lots of fresh fruit juice (orange mostly) and things started to move very well, but was very uncomfortable for 3 days, miserable on top of everything else. Good luck. x

Re: Constipation

Hi ladies on top of everything else this is so so painful and I did liken it to having a baby it also took me a time to realise that the stomach cramps were from the co codomal and that was painfull too just like being in labour!  I drink loads and loads of water I know we are always told to drink plenty but it does help. Sometimes cool from the kettle rather than very cold from the tap.  Also fibre and lots of fruit and veg.  Good luck Xx

Re: Constipation

I ended up going to GP she opened up the surgery an hour early for me and gave me hydro therapy of the colon and it worked thanked God. I came out of the toilet a different woman and hugged her! I am now taking senna plus until I have finished with pain killers anti biotics! Am pleased to say even though I am out of bed at 4am everything normal!!!! Xxx thanks ladies for your support!

Re: Constipation

Morning ladies,

What a horrid situation to be in, on top of everything else, I have same problem after surgery and after each chemo, totally miserable on top of all other SE's. I have been given lactulose which helps, but does not stop haemorrhoids appearing which is soooo painful.

Hope you get relief soon Rosie, you have been through so much you deserve a bloody break 🙂

Love and best wishes x Wendy

Re: Constipation

Haha... that's exactly the term I used in hospital before they gave me the gelatine suppository! I told the nurse that I had crowned but wasn't getting any further. The suppository helped but it still wasn't the easiest birth! x

Re: Constipation

That's what I need Mel gas and air! I still have stitches and worry about them bursting! It's like crowning a baby and then it goes back were it came from!!!! X

Re: Constipation

I had to do a lot of Lamaze breathing Rosie, even after a laxative and the gelatine suppository I was given! Unfortunately I wasn't given gas and air although I'm sure that would have helped! 😉 x

Re: Constipation

Thanks Mel this is just what we don't need isn't it!!!!!' Did you strain or did it happen easily? Can only ask questions like this on this forum thank God for it!!!!!!

Re: Constipation

Hi Rosie
I had a similar problem after surgery. It was 5 days for the first (somewhat painful) time and that was only after I had been given a laxative. It took some time to get back to normal... I think it was a combination of the pain drugs, the iron tablets I was given to to my blood count getting low and not being very mobile. It seemed to improve greatly once I'd been home a few days and much more mobile.

Hope it sorts soon. xx

Re: Constipation

Thanks if I haven't been tonight I will contact doctor in the morning I live in Cyprus so it is 5 .45 here and early closing for chemists, I have now increased water walking and founds some laxavit that the doctor have me a while a go with some medication incase it gave me constipation. It is a herbal remedy.

Re: Constipation

I think if you haven't opened your bowels at all for 3 days it would be best to seek medical advice.  You may need some medication or some sort of intervention.

Constipation

Help will I burst my stitches!
It's been 3 days since the blockage since I have changed to oral painkillers and antibiotic.
Have tried prunes, figs, apricots, all bran ,water, apple juice, grapes!!!!!
