Hi Coralie
Youre doing fab you really are ...cant believe youre on here chatting . Thanks for bra tip .. Im not actually having a problem at moment with what Im wearing as i finally settled with sports bras . Im just in dilemna about when to return to normal bras and should I continue to wear a bra in bed . I never did before so its a bit alien to me and Id rather not .
Hi Schumi ..yes please any advice you come across please share . I guess its prob down to once scars have healed and individual preference . But if there is any guidance I will follow it ...dont see the point of going through all this extensive surgery and then risk hacking up the wonderful results .
My daughter has double cups like you had ..and I know she would love to go down a few cups so Im gauging you on her and she does have discomfort too ... so Im glad youre happy with your outcome . Im not too bothered about under wired bras Iv always worn them , for me that s not the issue . But I am pleased with the result regardless ...the plastic surgeons are incredibly gifted and I am so grateful .
Big hugs Steph xxx
Hi Steph, I was just told to buy sports bras which is what I did do and they were useless so as I said I've just been wearing sloggi crop tops. Saw the surgeon today and she didn't say anything about the top so I assume it's fine (she has made me so much smaller, that I don't think support is that much of an issue). I'll be happy never to see an under wired bra again! After being a GG cup this is fantastic just wearing crop tops. I've googled the question about underwire bras and DIEP and can't seem to find an answer. I'll keep looking and let you know if I find out anything. Schumi x
Hi Schumi
Im butting in on your thread Im afraid . The subject of bras !
Its the one aspect that I havent quite got my head around . Iv had a recon and have been in sports bras day and night since .
I tried to get some pre op and it was a disaster the cups were ok but the swelling around me wouldnt allow them to fasten . So they ended up a waste of money .
Im still in sports bras but very soon Ill be getting back to work etc ...so what is the advice about type of bras ...when to stop relying on the sports bras .. how long to wear them for bed .. When is it ok to go back into under wired bras . I have asked these questions before and nobody really came forward .
Any ideas or advice welcome Steph xx
I didn't wear a bra until I came home and then none of the ones I had bought fitted. They all had proper cup sizes that wouldn't go anywhere near my new boobs. Ended up ordering a couple of sloggi crop tops which are so comfortable but not very supportive. Have another 3 types on order - thank goodness for online shopping. Coralie your recovery is remarkable, well done just be careful not to overdo it. The flat stomach was a real bonus for me I didn't expect to get a complete tummy tuck, can't wait to buy some new clothes. Schumi x
Hi Coralie,
You sound very up beat despite what may have been torture sitting in a chair for 8 hours! Im glad you are happy with your outcome and i wish you a speedy recovery. I keep saying this but everyone is so inspirational here! Well done!!
Xx
Flipping heck Coralie ..no mercy there 12 till 8 on day 1 !! . Thats pretty cruel ha . My hospital was obviously soft .. I dont think I did 8 hours after 5 days .
Anyway glad you havent had to go back to theatre .. I think youve had enough anaesthetic lately lol ...you cant be greedy .
You sound as though youre doing amazing . Big hugs Steph xxx
Wow, well done Coralie that's amazing. So pleased it all went well, I thought about you a lot yesterday. Thanks for keeping us informed. You are so lucky having a good view and internet access, I couldn't even send or receive a text the whole time I was in hospital. Take care and I'm sure you'll be home soon. Schumi x
Lucky you, my view was awful just some boring grey walls!! Let us all know when you're home, sending lots of positive thoughts. Love and hugs Schumi x
Hi Coralie, just want to wish you luck for tomorrow. I'll be think of you all day. Be strong and I promise you it's worth it. Love Schumi x
Hi Schumi
its amazing isnt it how much progress you can make in a small amount of time . , and the excitement when you achieve something so simple ha .
Good to hear youre healing well ...and the new wardrobe sounds fab .
The Asda scenario amused me too I must admit .. couldnt believe I done it ha . Fine state of affairs eh ! My body is getting stronger but Im losing my marbles lol ..
Anyway lovely to hear your news . Take care Steph xxx
Hi Steph, just been back to clinic for a wound check and I'm healing really well. On the way home we stopped at a little tearoom for tea and cake, I could never have imagined this time last week being able to do that so soon. Also I now need a new wardrobe - all my tops and trousers are hanging off me - every cloud has a silver lining!! Love your story about Asda. xx
Hi Schumi
Good to hear that youre being kind to yourself . But I dont suppose that you can do much else at this stage .. Like you I needed help to shower and wash my hair and I got so puffed out too,..it seemed crazy .
Im pretty much independent again now .. Im pottering around house cleaning up and cooking again . Still no heavy lifting or going mad with the hoover .
I did completely forget the other day though and went to Asda .. got out of my car and went in . Within a few mins I thought ..what the h.ll am I doing I cant carry anything so what am I doing here ? lol I walked back out and went home .
I had told my my daughter I was going to nip into supermarket and apparently she had said to my grandson how long will it take before she realises she cant do anything . ha ha ...needless to say we had a giggle .
Whats the next step for you Schumi ?
Steph xx
Thanks Steph, no I'm definietly taking it easy for the next few weeks. Oh the thought of being able to sleep on my side again! Coralie I took in some front buttoning nighties but the nurses kept putting me back into their gowns I assume because it makes it easier for them when they need to check the flap etc. I stayed in bed until Saturday when I only got out and sat in a chair for a short time, couldn't really walk anywhere with 4 drains and a catheter. On Sunday getting out of bed was much easier and I only had 2 abdo drains in so I could begin walking to the toilet etc. I too was in a side room with my own bathroom which was great. It's not fair on the other paitents on a ward when you need to be checked hourly through the night. Just re read your post Steph on how you are doing after 6 weeks and I'm looking forward to getting to that stage. Thanks xx
Hi Schumi pleased to hear all went well for you .. dont be tempted to do too much though be kind to yourself . Take care xx
Hi Coralie ..Keep upbeat honey ...lots of hugs and fairy dust from me to you xx
Ill be following your progress .. Steph xxx
Hi Coralie, no I don't have any drains in. The 2 breast drains came out on Saturday and the 2 abdo ones yesterday morning. I needed help putting my clothes on to come home and since then have stayed in pj's. My husband washed my hair for me in the shower this morning (I have a plastic garden chair in it so I can sit down) but I think I can probably manage on my own in a couple of days. I'm walking quite slowly bent over like an old woman but I couldn't imagine being this good a few days ago. I bought a selection of sports bras in various sizes for after the op, don't know what you are planning but I went down quite a few sizes. Anyway they have been useless none of them fit properly so I've gone for sloggi crop tops from John Lewis which are excellent and only £13. The pain is mainly in the abdomen to be honest the boobs just feel swollen and quite hard I get the odd shooting pain but it's nothing much. I'm taking paracetamol 4 times a day which is less painkillers than I had after my WLE and my sentinel lymph node biopsy. Everybody recovers differently and apparantly I'm a good healer and had no complications. Hope this is of some use. xx
Hi Coralie, just to let you know I am home and am feeling great just now. I had the DIEP last Wednesday and a reduction on the right boob. The op lasted 8 hours and went very well. I won't lie to you the first 72 hours were rough really rough but it was worth it. I came home yesterday and today 6 days post op I feel good. I couldn't tolerate the PCA machine or any painkiller that was morphine related so I am now just on paracetamol and managing fine. The morphine made me really nauseous and that lasted until I came home yesterday and I can honestly say the nausea was worse than the pain. After about 48 hours every day something came out drains, catheters etc so I could really see that I was improving. I didn't get out of bed properly until Sunday and then I was home on Monday. Good luck next week, I will be thinking of you. xx
Hi Coralie, I'm going in in a couple of hours. Saying goodbye to my youngest this morning was really, really hard and she is 15. I've just left little notes for her all around the house telling her how much I love her. I'm pleased you have a date for your DIEP and the 31st insn't too long to wait. Good luck and I'll let you know how mine goes when I'm home xx
Pinky 3 thank you so much for your kind words xx
Hi Schumi
My surgery was carried out at Whiston . If your care so far has been exemplary theres no reason why that should not continue . The leaflets and information that you have aleady been given will probably have explained as much as I can anyway . Mine is just about my experience ... yours as you rightly say will be your own . Goodluck Schumi ...big hugs . Ill be thinking about you xxxx
Just wanted to send a quick message to Coralie and Schumi to wish you both all the best for your next surgeries:)
I hope you both have super quick recoveries and lovely new cancer free boobs 🙂
Hi Steph, thank you so much for taking the time to reply. Your post was really helpful. Like you I know in general what they are going to do to me but I don't want too much information at this stage. I'll find out exactly what happened after the operation. Your point about it having to be something serious to cancel a diep has cheered me up a bit. Can I ask which hospital did your operation? So far my care has been exemplerary, I have no complaints whatsoever. I just hope I get the same level of care post op that you've had. It's really good to hear that you are doing so well after 6 weeks - keep it up. xx
Hi Schumi
Ill certainly answer anything you want to you know as honestly as I can ...so fire away anything you want to know and it may or may not help you .
I didnt have any preconceived ideas in truth . I knew what they were going to do as in there was some vascular surgery happening in my stomach and blood vessels would be cut and the new blood supply would be reattached to my new breast tissue and I didnt dwell on it at all . Once I was under anaesthetic I knew I wouldnt know anything until I woke up and I really didnt think about it .And that is exactly what happened I was probably only awake in anaesthetic room for about five mins and next thing I was being woken up ..for me it seemed Id been asleep for 5 mins ha .
Yes I was a bit concerned it could be cancelled especially when they said phone up two hours before admission to check your bed is available . I now realise it would have to be something very very serious for a diep op to be cancelled because it involves so many people and time ...
I was taken back to the ward . I did have a side room and this seems to be standard practice in my hospital because the room has to be draft free ..they really did take it serious and it was to protect my breast flap . The thing I wasnt expecting is I had to be covered by a huggy blanket ( hot air blanket ) I did ask if it could be folded in half so it only covered the side of my body it needed to . I cant remember now if I had to have it for the first 24 hours or 48 .. but most def for 24 hours . I had one to one nursing for the first 24 hours although in truth I didnt realise that until I was told afterwards . I was cared for very well . The pain was controlled with a slow release anaesthetic pump that released a small amount of anaesthetic into my body over five days .. my hospital use this method because the slow release morphine pumps keeps the ladies bit drowsy and slows them down getting up and mobile . I did have paracetamol and codiene as well . I would call the pain in my breast more of a discomfort . The pain was more in my tum but I did have a complication which accounted for this and once that was sorted I managed well with the pain control they gave me . The tum felt more tight than anything and I described it as being in a very tight corset . I also felt a deep pressure from inside but as you will find out ...you do swell so I think the discomfort comes from the internal swelling . I honestly did not find it too bad . I stayed on the codeine and paracetamol for about a week after got home . following that it was just odd paracetamol .
Obviously everyone will have their own experience . I was very weak but I was anaemic aswell and my blood levels were low so I needed extra units of blood . This does not happen to everyone .
I was still weak when I got home and remained breathless but again ...this was me ! it doesnt mean it will be you . The tightness in my tum stayed and I must be honest it did put me off doing my excercises and I only did a few . I am now doing them properly because the scar tissue needs to stretch so I can resume back to my normal abilities . I have done exactly what Iv been told so I havent hoovered or lifted anything I shouldnt . Its driving me nuts a bit but Im coming up to six weeks now so Im going to start doing a bit more . I have been able to start sleeping on my side a bit too and thats a bonus . I found that I had to put two pillows under the back of my knees because I couldnt lie too flat due to the pressure and tightness on my tummy but now I can lie flatter . I think patience is the key and doing as youve been advised . Is this info what you wanted or is there anything specific Steph xx
Hi Steph , how is your recovery going? Do you mind me asking was the operation as you were expecting? I'm obviously getting very anxious about next week, I'm dreading it being cancelled for some reason. I'm trying to avoid anyone who has the slightest sniffle, just can't wait for it to be all over. Really wish I could fast forward my life by about a month! I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks Schumi x
