Thank you Nicola and Alex. I'm almost tempted to go for straight mx, but the only way to use the skin and therefore only have one site of surgery is to do immediate reconstruction. So I'm going to give it a go with the pump up boob and hope it doesn't explode or infect!
Hi Carole, I know what a difficult decision this is. I started off thinking I didn't want recon when I found needed a left mx but then decided if I could have it all done at once I would go for it and Im really glad I did. I had the strattice mesh and immediate implant (at Derby) and the result is very good, I was only a b cup but in bras and swimwear it looks fine and even without it isn't too bad! At the hospital they had a photo album with all the different sorts of recon before and after photos (which I had taken too) shoulders down, plus the surgeon had some egs on his computer, so ask if they have any to show you. Like Alex I was back at work on a phased return after 8.5 weeks. It does take a long time for the implant to feel part of you, probably about a year, as it feels like a football to start with and twinges for a long time but I am two years on now and can honestly say I am no longer constantly aware of it . I know ladies who have had the expander version too and also have great looking results. Once you have seen the consultant they should give you a date quite quickly. Good luck with your treatment and surgery! Nicola xx
Thanks for your answers ladies. Jill I did post on the surgery going through treatment, but unfortunately no replies.
my feelings at the moment are that I either get immediate reconstruction with silicone, or possibly the expanding one inserted, provided it's not gong to hold up the mx too much. If they say I need something more complicated, then I think I'll just go for Mx ASAP and worry about reconstruction later.
right now I'm just terrified the cancer is already in the lymphs or worse and if not then this is all taking too long.
Hi it is so difficult to decide, not only have you been told you have cancer and are scared but you are expected to make difficult and life changing decisions straight away.
I can't advise you on mx and reconstruction as I only had mx and no recon. To me I just wanted the cancer out and as I need chemo as triple neg I just wanted to give myself the quickest healing time so I can get on to chemo. I also only have little boobs or boob thatI now have, I am 34 B/C. I am happily flat chested on one side as the BCN failed to give me a softie when I left hospital. There overnigh but was discharged in a Sat and no staff.I can have recon at a later data date if I change mind.
You need to consider recovery time if you need further treatment. Practical issues re managing at home after op, how close hospital is if you have issues. Only you can make the right decision but it is a hard one.
Got to have MX. Do I go for immediate reconstruction? Silicone implant? Flap options all sound huge.
Dont know what to do!
