hello,
can you give me more info on your breast reconstruction procedure.
I had masectomy, radio, chemo, herceptin jab 3 yrs ago and now considering reconstruction.
2 yrs ago, a consultant said "he wouldn't advise me to have reconstruction" - but since learnt that I really should have seen a plastic surgeon.
I thought an implant would be "easier/quicker" - there seems to be so mny procedures available. I guess a plastic surgeon is the one who advises which is the best procedure.

read your post with interest.
there are so many procedures for breast reconstruction - did your consultant say what was best for you. I understand the implants are "easier" , with less complications.
I, too, had a masectomy in dec 2014 and am now considering breast reconstruction.

hello Alison
I read your post with interest, because I, too, had a masectomy in dec 2014, radio, chemo, herceptin jab. 3 years on am thinking about breast reconstruction.
as your post was last year, am wondering you you have had the operation yet and if you can guide me through it.

Hi Alison,
i havent been on here for a while so just seen your post. Hope you are feeling a bit better now. Ihad a DIEP last summer as a delayed reconstruction. Ive got to say I am delighted with the result. Very natural. The scarring is fading & is very fine across the top of new boob. Iam now going for a breast uplift on other breast and a nipple reconstruction. My surgeon likes to leave it 9 months after the DIEP but I asked for a bit longer so my sick leave at work renewed itself!! My DIEP was two years after my treatment there were no funding issues or time restrictions on when you can have it done in my area. I chose to go to a specialist centre for my reconstruction which meant I was away from my family so that was hard not having msny visitors but it was worth it!!
Its is a long recovery but take your time. Be kind to yourself. I used lots of bio oil on my scars & gently massaged them once they were healed. Unfortunately I have put weight on due to the lovely estrogen blocker.....lol. I did not rush back to work & gave myself time to recover.
Wishing you a speedy recovery! Xx
Hi Alison
so glad to hear that you finally got your reconstruction and are delighted with the results. Wishing you a speedy recovery and an enjoyable shopping trip to stock up on new underwear. X

Update - I’m currently in hospital after having my surgery on Monday!!
I ended up changing to a different consultant and after lots of chasing got a cancellation. I got the call on the Thursday before.
Healing well and everyone seems very happy with the results, including me 😍
It’s the final stage and although I know it will be hard I’m so glad I’ve had it done,
😁🤗

Hi
I had a mastectomy in Dec 2014 followed by chemo & rads that finished in July 2015. I have always wanted reconstruction but couldn't have an immediate because I needed rads. I am still awaiting surgery & wondered what other people experiences have been.
I have had pre op assessment and ct scan but at every appointment they say they can't give me any indication of when it will be.
I'm finding this really gets me down as this is the final piece of getting back to being me 😟
Hi Alison, I had chemo first, then mastectomy September 2014 followed by radiotherapy. My experience has been completely different to yours. I couldn't have immediate reconstruction due to my cancer being very aggressive and some skin involvement. I didn't mind my mastectomy but hated being lopsided with my floppy 34dd. I wanted to have another mastectomy to balance me up but my surgeon insisted I research reconstruction. He was going to do an LD flap and implant but then had so many new cancer cases he didn't have time. At this point I'd given up my job to prepare for surgery so he felt awful. He managed to get me on a waiting list for a plastic surgeon that specialised in flap surgery and I had my TUG reconstruction in October 2016. I am delighted with the result and what surprises me most is that mentally it has moved me on and I don't have that constant daily reminder of cancer when looking in the mirror.
I'm not sure where you live but research other surgeons and if necessary ask to be put on their waiting lists. Hope you get this sorted so that you can move on too. X
