Re: Dentists during radiotherapy?

Hi Charts and thank you for replying. I probably haven't been fair about my dentist as she is lovely! She has now done a couple more X-Rays and it could be a couple of teeth with potential to cause problems but she can't exactly say which. Anyway I am now taking antibiotics and the pain is m7ch less - thank God. She just doesn't want to start messing with the teeth just yet so I am going back 9n 4th Jan - after my RT has finished - and hopefully get my teeth sorted!! I blame the school dentist who filled every tooth when I was a child!! Xx

Re: Dentists during radiotherapy?

Hiyer Ali,

I had dental work done during radiotherapy, and to be honest I don't think to fair that's your dentist is holding off doing the work that could get you out of your pain. Infact, I had a tooth break on the morning of my surgery....so left it a couple of weeks as couldn't face the dentist and went mid radiotherapy. I asked my dentist about having X-rays and stuff during rt, and he said it was no problem as it was a very small targeted place he xrayed and he had no concerns with it at all. Saying that mine was a large filling needed only.  RT is hard enough as it is, as is cancer treatment, without having to deal with dental pain as well. Did your dentist give his reasons for not undertaking work on this tooth....maybe he believes there might be mor complex problems, hence the need for full X-rays, and is concerned about starting it with It during such an active treatment process? I know that if you having rt on the head and neck area area dental work isn't advised, also during chemotherapy and after...due to a variety of things like infection possibility, low white cells and so on.

Could you negotiate with them something temporary . It sounds to me from what you are saying that this might not be a case of just a simple filling, and possibly root canal work ? Hard to get something temporary with root canal work needing doing, as certainly it requires an initial long appointment and a first long appointment. If your pain is severe then you can always get an emergency appointment, burn this won't be with your dentist more than likely, but an emergency on call dentist over the Christmas period.

Dentists during radiotherapy?

Hi, I am really bothered with toothache at the moment and have been for the last couple of weeks. My dentist is reluctant to do X-Rays or any dental work really while I am having radiotherapy. I don't finish til 29th December with the Christmas break but really don't want toothache all 9ver the holiday. Has anyone any experience of this or advise?
