Hi Rosie 14 and everyone
Rosie, May I ask why / how your implants failed?
I had a Braxon implant in November and am having delayed problems with wound. I think the fluid pushed it and now it’s slightly open. My surgeon says the rads I had 9 years ago is probably the reason. I was not informed it could be an issue before I had the surgery.
I am probably going to need another surgery.

Hi Jacqui not easy to decide & its a big decision. I was lucky as I could take my time deciding as my op was a delayed reconstruction. Its also worth talking to people who have been through it as well as on here. Have you thought of asking breastcancercare for the someone like me service? I did this and it was really useful. The lady I spoke to had had a DIEP....she could tell me what it was like for her. One of her top tips was to get your support team in place.....those first two weeks you need supporting and after that you need to take things slow. If ever theres an excuse for a gardener, cleaner who also irons & doing your shopping online -This is it!!!
Hi Daisy,
Am so sorry....I missed your reply. I hope you are ok? I dont know what you decided but hope you are on the road to recovery....
I am now just 2 1/2 months post surgery and am improving loads. Some one said the 6 week marker is a milestone and that was the case for me. I really turned a corner. I healed up pretty quickly apart from two little areas that took a bit of time & in the end a little bit of magic cream to sort. Love my new breast. I do have to be careful with lifting heavier items still as it makes my tummy feel sore.....still early days. I drove after 6 weeks little local journeys. When shopping in the supermarket I take extra bags and put fewer items in each bag so they are lessheavy..... With young children you most certainly will need help afterwards no matter which op you go for. Have you friends or family that can help you.....its only for a little while.
Last week I went out and bought an ordinary bras! Amazing.....stuck to the non wired ones of course...
Thinking about you,
xx
Hi Daisy52 - can I ask where you are up to with your surgery? I am mid - decision (erring towrdas DIEP) which I'll be ahving with M double Mx. Thanks
Jacqui x
Hi Daisy it was Joanna Skillman that did my DIEP! I am happy with the results. I did suffer ab wound dehiscence and had district nurses coming into me for several weeks! Also the wound under the new right flap opened slightly but 6 months on I am all together!!!
My implants were done in Cyprus and I was butchered about!!!😞
Hope your appointment went well?
They will possible offer you the op quicker as I had already had my mastectomy so was classed as non urgent!
Hi Everyone,
Ive just had a delayed breast reconstruction -DIEP. It is two years since my masectomy and 22 months since rads. My reconstruction was delayed due to the rads but I delayed it further as the Herceptin has affected my heart so on heart meds and I wanted to have time to recover from all the treatment.
You definately need a plastic surgeon who specialises in this reconstruction. I also chose to go to a specialist regional centre where DIEPS are routinely undertaken. Am glad I did this the staff and surgeons have been fantastic. Im receiving great aftercare. Only been home a week so early days but have been fine with lots of pain relive so can keep moving. Was told to keep talkng it as being in pain just stops you moving and that slows healing. Make sure you have laxatives too as pain relieve such as codeine is terrible for constipation.....am using lactulose which works for me.
Am able to self care but avoiding any lifting. I have never had any dressings on my wounds -they used glue to seal them -amazing!!! The wounds are healing well so been told at clinic they dont need to see me until August now -fingers crossed progress continues to be straightforward.
Been using loose fitting pjs and loose fitting cheap stretchy yoga pants. Am ok with putting on/off loose t shirts and loose sleeveless tops but also have button up shirts/cardi to hand if needed. Bought cheap shapewear from Sainsburys -you wear it 24hrs a day so need several pairs. Mine cost £6 each so no need to buy the expensive stuff. Am using my masectomy bras but bought bra extenders......been fine! Will treat myself to some lovely new bras when fully recovered.
Ive found the U pillow and wedge plus loads of pillows great for getting a comfortable postion in bed at home as have to sleep on my back. I put two pillows under my knees at night for comfort but I can lay my legs flat and its good to gently gradually encourage to strech your legs flat if you can as this will help with standing up straight (doc told me this) but I dont sleep like that! My bed is a good height -ie when sat on bed my feet are flat on floor but knees at right angles as recommended by the specialsit nurse. This has enabled me to get in and out of bed on my own. Ive a set of wooden drawers with TV on and can reach stuff on there plus a hard tray on the bed beside me to put stuff. Really helps! Walk in shower a must! Managed stairs easily. Definately worth swimming and walking before this op to build tummy muscles as Nurses tell me my ability to stand up straight away is down to strong tummy muscles. I am no fitness freak though by a long chalk....my adult sons laughed when I told them as they know how unfit I really am!!
initially a water bottle or glass with straw is helpful if your laying semi flat but am using ordinary tall glasses now. Drink loads of water!!! Good for healing but also helps with constipation. Am also eating dried prunes...lol.
Been doing lost of little walks round house / garden. But will start a little walk to cafe and back this coking week.
Lots of rest though too!!
Ive got people around me for the first two weeks as I do tire really easily and need naps! Lol... And its comforting knowing someone is around to support.....help out with doing the shopping washing and cooking. I have a cleaner coming in and someone to cut my lawn and will be shopping online once my little support group have gone and am on my own once more. Pharmacy will deliver meds.
Ive been lucky so far but wanted to write this positive response as so often posts are from people not faring well.
Am delighted so far with my new breast......far far better than I was expecting.....and its a 'f' cup -dont know how they managed that!! Just fingers crossed recovery continues smoothly.
Good luck hope your DIEP goes well.....xx 😊😊
Hi Daisy, if there is a chance you will have radiotherapy on your right breast, I would ask about potential damage to a DIEP reconstruction. It would be a shame to go through this surgery, only for the tissues to be damaged by rads. This is why many places will offer temporary reconstruction as MrsMerton mentioned.
Yes, lumpectomy and local excision are the same thing. They do literally stick a wire in you under local shortly before the op to mark where the area is that the surgeon needs to take out. It's done by the radiologist using ultrasound and then you have a mammo with the wire in! Just when you think things couldn't get any weirder. I had a DIEP rather than an implant because I am having radio to the mx breast which damages implants. Hopefully my DIEP will not be too badly damaged. You might be interested in this site. Www.keepingabreast.org.uk - it is a breast reconstruction charity. Quite a few reputable plastic surgeons also put up galleries of their before and after breast reconstructions on the internet (neck down, no faces) which you can browse to see what the recons look like. Good luck with the plastics team. Xx
Hello Daisy - I used to smoke quite heavily but gave up 8 years ago and that was considered no problem for a DIEP. So I understand from your post that you are having a mx on one side and a lumpectomy on the other side - so cancer surgery to both breasts. You need to see a really good plastic surgeon (who can do DIEP etc) and discuss ALL the options because long term you want them to match as well as possible. I was an E cup - they will struggle to match that with any reconstruction but the lumpectomy will of course reduce your other side as well. However, the other side can't be adjusted to match the DIEP side until about 6 months later when the DIEP has found its final shape, whereas you will be having the lumpectomy now and then rads which more or less precludes further surgery. So in that case I'm guessing the surgeon(s) will be aiming to create the same cup size in both breasts through different ops performed around the same time and hoping they turn out similar-ish I assume. What happens if you don't get clear margins on the lumpectomy and need a mx in the end? You can only have the DIEP done once although you can sometimes have both breasts created from the DIEP if done at the same time. Or is there an option of having a saline expander and going back to do a reconstruction later when you have seen where you are with the lumpectomy side? Sorry, that doesn't give you answers but I think you need someone to look at the overall cosmetic outcome for both breasts holistically. Hope all goes well for you whatever you choose. Xx
