Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

Thanks ladies, I haven't made any plans as yet, I think I just want some normality back in my life instead of this waiting lark!! I think it will do me good as now I'm uncertain what lies ahead for me x

same applies, you need to look after yourself and not worry about others xxx

Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

Hi suzie
so pleased you had a good break how sad you had to come back to that result
I think the main thing is how you feel and not whether you are going to mess folks about, if you can afford to stay off, I would. You can get out and about, no need to sit at home, I was boasting to the girls that I've walked 250 miles since 30th may, just after surgery and I'm not the outdoors type lol xx

Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

Glad you had a good hiliday Suzie ,sounds a lot more glamorous than Filey where I went!! I think we are all having what those " Oh my God,what has just happened to me moments",my G.P said completely normal to be a bit wobbly mentally when the conveyor belt of appointments slows down.Im sorry the test came back positive to spoil the end if your holiday ,10th September seems a long way off to see Onc. and get your head around what happens next

Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

Hi everyone, I'm back from my lovely holiday in Ibiza, just what I needed, although it was a bit scary knowing that I was quite healed from surgery but I was able to swim in the pool and sea (with a dressing on the first time), which wasn't very comfortable and my scar felt a little swollen after so I kept it dry for a few days. I was able to wear my bikini but kept the scar covered in the sun which was also fine.

My time away gave me time to think about what I'd been through and I have to admit that there were many teary moment when it hit me, but I think it helped put thing in perspective!!

I too have been considering going back to work as my oncology app is not until 10th Sept but as several of you have said I don't want to mess people about as I have someone covering me only to go off again in a few weeks but my thoughts are that I may need more time on the other side.

I also have to dilemma of the BRCA2 results which I found out yesterday is positive unfortunately (great end to my holiday, not!!) so until I see my consultant again I'm not sure of my options but know that I'll go mad sitting around the house all day.

Thanks Sheena for starting the new thread, I will take a look, Suzie xx

Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

Yes Jill, psychological scars take far longer to heal than physical ones. I'm considering staying off work until this is all over now, will see how I go though. Thing is, if I do go back and then have to go off again it's messing them about more than if I just stay off - I hear that they're getting a temp in to cover part of my role, so me going in potentially only to be off again would rather mess the temp around too.

Hi Ladies

I have started a new thread now - surgery/results over- next steps with treatments, I think most of the folk here are at that stage

Hope to chat there!

Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

Guess none of us like feeling that we are not superwoman!!!What G.P said to me made me feel more " normal" , he seemed to think most people who have been through this take a while to recover/come to terms psychologically with having been diagnosed with such a scary illness.

Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

You're not a wimp at all Jill, all of us here are the opposite. I do know how you feel though. I emailed work the other day with an update, and apologised that I couldn't be more precise with timings, ie couldn't tell them when I would be back in. The reply cane that there was no expectation re when I would be back in and that they would handle things, and I am to take things week by week, or month by month. So that reassured me to try to stop fretting over work. We are daft aren't we x

Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

Yes ,crying when someone asks you to help with their problems is not very professional. I am making a start on dealing with all the things that have been "pending" since all this chaos started eg getting fires / car serviced ,opening bills I had forgotten about...I have 2 dogs to walk, mother in laws elderly Yorkie and my very lively Collie should keep me active anyway.

Shame we don't live close by, I could have recruited you to join me on my walks! Your boss will be fine Jill, I'm sure, we don't have a job that would be helpful to anyone if we're not in control of our own emotions x

Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

GP signed me off for a month, said very common to have these sort of psychological "after shocks" when you have been faced with your own mortality and been on the conveyer belt of treatment when there is a pause you suddenly think what the hell just happened! You have lost slot of control to a large degree of what happens in your life, said time to process all that had happened will help. Now to ring my boss....

Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

Yes ,that's sounds a really good name for a thread, doesn't exclude anyone.Im guessing that what we are feeling is pretty normal ,our bodies are reacting to being under extreme stress ,but it does make you feel a bit pathetic,I hate admitting I'm not capable of dealing with stuff, that's what I do for a living and I'm the one who solves friends problems and supports everyone else etc

Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

Hi Jill
good idea to see gp, I am signed off until 20th August, same as you, bursting into tears and really nervy. Not expecting to ever feel like this as am usually very capable of keeping a check on my emotions. Was huge relief to know that I didn't have to think about work for a while.
So, yes a name, how's about "surgery over next steps with treatment" or similar.?

Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

Hi Sheena,I suggested a "supporting each other through treatment thread" or similar for all those who have been talking over the last couple of months,I'm guessing not everyone is just having radiotherapy.Have you any ideas?Going to G.P today to talk about work.as I still burst into tears at the slightest thing don't think work is going to be an option for a while.Although routine and normality would be nice,I know I'm not up to dealing with other peoples problems.

Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

Good morning ladies

well I guess we're all over the surgery side and moving on to the next stage of treatment

I've got radiotherapy planning appointment tomorrow,  think blondie, (ange) has too

shall we start a new thread for this and any suggestions for a name.?

I did start back at work but had to be signed off as I was not coping mentally and think there may be others in the same boat

anyway, hopefully all bumbling along x

hugs

Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

I know it's a big thing to get your head around, what bothered me the most was the idea that random people will know your business if you start to lose your hair,I have really struggled with having to tell people I know never mind people I don't.Some people have had results in terms of keeping hair with cold cap if you want to ask about that.

Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

Hi Bibi44

Welcome to the BCC discussuin forum.

If you do need to have chemotherapy you'll find some threads in "Going through treatment/ chemotherapy" including a thread called "top tips".  Members also start threads when they know in which month their chemotherapy will start, so they can exchange information and support each other.

I hope this helps.

Very best wishes

Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

Thanks for your advice everyone. Very helpful. Is anyone else having chemo? My nodes were negative, but I'm HER2+ve, so definitely chemo for me. To be honest it's the part I'm looking forward to least, although a couple of friend of friends say it goes faster than you expect. x

Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

Hi Bibi,I was told to take outer dressings off after 2 days and the sterile strips after a week ,didn't have to go to nurse.I was really scared to look but wasnt too bad, settled down a lot by end of first week, since swelling has setled down it is bit more noticeable where tumour has been removed ,but not nearly as bad as I thought it would look.

Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

Hi Bibi, I took mine off after a week as it was driving me mad not being able to shower properly, I wasn't given and appointment to go back to have it changed just told I could either remove it or leave it until I saw surgeon for my results, it was nothing scary and all healing up nicely 😊 I did re cover it if I had to put a bra on to go out but other than that I left it and by the time I went back 2 weeks later it was fine xx Jo

Bibi ask the surgery for a district nurse to visit to remove your dressing or ring BCN and see if she will do it Hugs Sandra

Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

Hi all
Had a lumpectomy & SNB last week. I went to my surgery to book an appointment with the nurse to remove my dressing next Friday & she is on holiday. They have advised me to to A&E but don't fancy hanging around for hours for something that will just take 5 mins. Just wondered if anyone has taken off their own dressings? Also a little nervous about what I might find . . Was it worse or better than expected from what you could see through the dressing? Any input gratefully received x

Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

Really good news ladies.Maybe we should start a "supporting each other through treatment May/June 2015 starters" thread or similar at some point, that way anyone of us who have been supporting each other can keep in touch we will all have slightly different paths and treatment plans no doubt.

oops....posted too soon. Meant to say BCN recommended massaging breast from scar position in upwards movement with bio oil in long upward sweeps towards neck as it clears lumpy tissue away into lymph. Take care everyone. Shall be posting on Radiotherapy thread no doubt once I get my date. x

Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

Hi girls. I had good news yesterday too. Clear margins and nodes. 10mm Grade 1 (interesting as was 14mm on biopsy so it'd shrunk!). Rads/tamoxifen for me too. I'm off on hols at 26th for 2 weeks so will start rads on return (7 we gap from surgery). Funny as guidelines recommend 31 days but was told y day that anything up to 6 months is fine. Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

Hi June, thanks for that. Not looking forward to 5 years on pills but guess its necessary, although surgery said that it wouldn't make a lot of difference to me as my diagnosis was very good so I guess I need to look into this a little closer as I don't really want the night sweats again!! And I could do without joint pain as I like to dance and play with my little granddaughter, Suzie x

Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

Hi Suzie 55,

Just wanted to say, i had clear margains and nodes removed when had ,lumpdectomy, as my first was suspect but others all clear,  I only had rads finished them about month ago, feeling fine, arm still feels slightly odd, but apart from that i feel well,  see you going to have to take tamoxifen Suzie, im on it to as i was oestrogon pos due i guess to my long term use of HRT.  I get odd joint pain and few night sweats but apart from that no more side effects. I was diagnosed just after Christmas and here i am in July feeling fine.  So as long as gene test negative you should be same.  Good luck,.  June

Hi everyone, I got a good result today, clear margins and nodes do providing I get a negative result on the gene test then its just rads and tamoxifen for me which I'm so grateful for. So I'll be off on my holibobs on Saturday morning and will celebrate getting over this first hurdle. Take care everyone see you in another post on the next chapter of our journey Suzie xx

Hi Jill and all, yes its tomorrow, this is the most anxious I've been so far I think. I will be devastated if they say I need chemo as that's not been on my radar and have felt very fortunate for that!!

I just want this out of the way so I can go away on Saturday and enjoy my holiday before I get the results of the gene test!!

Jill, do you know when your next treatment starts?  Suzie x

Hi Amberstone, glad you are feeling a bit more comfortable but frustrating that you still don't know what is happening yet. Mismore(Sheena) started a thread about the pros and cons of having chemo and I think she got a lot of really helpful advice and support there maybe you should have a look?

Re: Had my Lumpectomy today

Hi Jill   sorry not replied sooner now I understand why we are allowed to have a few off days!  its the waiting for results and then not getting them on time and then not what you want to hear!

I got my drain out 8th day, so much better.   I went for my results day after expected. Not all I wanted to hear but thankful it is not as bad as the brave people on here.= so I am very grateful.

He told me wide area all clear, 2 lympth nodes removed and clear, ER negative HER2 negative not giving me tamoxifen or herceptin but I would need Chemo - devastated- I was told I would only need radiotherapy. he kept making it worse there was a BUT because of my heart bypass I may not be able to have Chemo the Specialist would have to weigh everything up!  I am now waiting for Chemo specialists appointment again another 2/3 weeks I just pray she says I cant have Chemo i am scared of that.  I have also had to return to the centre to have my surgery site drained twice. but I feel much better than I thought I would after surgery 15/6/15 I am not sore at all in breast although it is very hard and lumpy around scar feels like someone has shoved a grapefruit in one boob!! BCN says normal. Like a lot I am sleeping all over the place at night awake all times.  I was on the Darling Buds of June site about surgery and radiotherapy so I will now have to change over to Chemo ladies and see how this is dealt with.

Did you get your results as always I hope they at best positive or as good as you would hope. take care xx
