Re: Jan 2012 Surgery Buddies

Thanks Twinky and sounds like a great idea to try. Managed a couple more hours sleep but woke to discover that my "Dennis" had been naughty and has almost 300 mls so rush call to Distruct Nurse. Frustrated it has increased but from reading your great blogs, it seems better to keep these darned friends as long as possible to try and prevent other problems. Now assume I won't lose it tomorrow night but who knows..
Hope you are continuing to progress while and gentle hugs back xx

Oh Lelly, what a time you've had. Poor thing! Giving you a very gentle hug. Wish I could make you feel better but at least you're on the road to recovery. Know what you mean about not getting cosy for sleep. I found the sofa good as I could turn towards my non- bad side and have the back of the sofa against my back so felt more snuggled than just lying on my back.

Re: Jan 2012 Surgery Buddies

Hi everyone
Haven't posted for a while as had my mx and recon on the 30th and only got home yesterday. Interesting week as had to stay in recovery for 24 hrs due to breathing issues after op and then whisked back in for another 2 hr op to take away a blood clot and drain a lot of fluid. Then had severe reaction to cocktail of meds (incl everyone's fave Tramadol) and hb level dropped very low to 7.5 and my 3 drains filled to over 540 mls in 1 day so have been looking like a vampire...
Anyway, finally home with just one drain and hope to get that removed when I see consultant weds night along with my results. Very sore as you would expect and am taking all the great advice here about keeping up the exercises. I have already found that it is so easy to tighten up when sitting a lot but once you start the gentle exercises it generally eases. Hardest thing now is sleeping, so tired but cant get comfy. Normally sleep on my bad side and struggling with lying on my back, even with the v shape pillow and keep waking myself up with dreaded snoring. Temperature also fluctuating dramatically , ie body temp registers normal but one minute very cold and then too hot, assume this is normal after what I have been through the last week.
Anyway, going to try to get back to sleep in a while but have given OH a break from the noise and fidgeting !!!
Best wishes to all, sounds like we are all at various stages and too tired to remember everyone but am thinking of you all.

Hello

Di I am ever so sorry to be contrary but Fat Cat is female. Could not part from her for all the tea in China.

Mary M I am so delighted about your results.
Hollygypsy and Care N hello and welcome to our little group.

A gentle hug to the ones who did not get the results they wished for and another hug to the rest of you.

Trying to get to sleep but no luck so far.

Re: Jan 2012 Surgery Buddies

Hi Di

Bet if I brought my three rabbits round to see you the cars wouldn't be so sleepy anymore! I'm not the only one with an absent man then. At least mine is in the same country! Feeling slightly strange as I've reached that inbetweeners treatments stage...MX over but chemo to come. Don't feel very driven to do anything but have some visits to friends later in the week & that will snap me out of my complacency I think!

Re: Jan 2012 Surgery Buddies

Hi girls

Talking about bras: I got very good advice and help from Bravissimo (I know there is a small one in Leeds). Have a look at The Bra Clinic, http://www.thebraclinic.co.uk/

based in N Yorkshire but there is an online ordering. I’ve seen the goods (at a local helpgroup) and I bought a vest style top with a support insert which I wear instead of my bra, you can also wear it as a pj top. I’ve been advised not to get a bra with pockets yet until my seroma goes down. I also have a little bit of seroma where my cleavage would be. Also my scar is a little bit red and sore (I’m cut from breastbone to right under my armpit), going to call the bcn tomorrow. I’m ‘home alone’ for a couple of days as OH is in Norway on business, so just here with 2 very sleepy pussycats.
Alaana: I LOVE Fat Cat – can I have him please?!

Twinky, maybe Pebbles doesn’t like your wallpaper or was she trying to dig her way out!

Like Kitcat, I feel on a bit of a plateau at the minute, just waiting for my date for chemo. Looks like we’re more or less going to start all together – more holding virtual hands coming up!!!

Chascat, don’t be disheartened about your results, it’s better that they get all of the c out, than having it re-occur. Even though I’m tn, my surgeon said that chemo is a must because of the size of my lump (61mm)and it gets rid of any microscopic bits of naughty cells.
Jayne, good luck at the dentist. I hope he’s handsome so that you can stare into his eyes above the mask! Lol! .. take your mind off your painy bits!

Welcome, Care N and hollygypsy.

Mary M: Great news that your margins are clear, that’s a terrific step! And you don’t need chemo which is excellent news also. I think rads are manageable, so I’ve been told. I’ve got that to look forward to in six months time. I had the bone and liver scan and chest Xray before my surgery, but I just suppose it’s how different NHS Trusts work.

Hollygyspy: You may find that your surgeons will talk about “national guidelines” re size of tumour and chemotherapy. As mine was 61mm it is a certainty that I have chemo and rads. Have a look at this booklet from the BCC website, or talk to the ladies on the helpline, they are very knowledgeable and helpful.

Hugs and xxxx to everyone (sorry if I haven't mentioned you by name)

Re: Jan 2012 Surgery Buddies

Good evening to you all

Back home once again after my pilgrimage to Aberdeen to get wound checked. Good news is that they only got 75mls of fluid this time so don't have to go back until Monday next week (hurray 6 days without hitting the road) but since the tissue under the wound has opened a bit I am still having the district nurse calling daily to change my dressing. Oh well, just a wee hitch on the way to recovery. Looks like the rads will have to wait a bit longer than planned.

It was a lovely sunny day here so my daughter and I went for lunch after the hospital visit and she took me for my monthly appointment to get my eyelashes and eyebrows tinted as I am of the blonde variety, so not much colour in the face. Vanity does not leave you when you are a recycled teenager I am afraid.

Hope all of you are doing okay

Love Alanaa and Cat

Re: Jan 2012 Surgery Buddies

Firstly - welcome to HollyGypsy...one of the others will come along with sage advice soon.
Secondly - went for my post op today and apart from having to drain my armpit and breast (which should have been done ealier - my fault - its such a long journey)
the results were
CLEAR MARGIN!
APART FROM THE ONE SENTINEL NODE NONE OF THE OTHERS WERE POSITIVE!(they have all gone anyway)
NO VASCULAR INVASION!
so now I have to go back in two weeks to get the all clear from the surgeon (cos my incisions are not totally healed).
However I also have to go back on Wednesday - will need to be up at the crack of dawn for a Liver scan, Chest X Ray and Bone scan.
It seems that these are what they always do when you have a positive node....and then it will be the Radiotherapy and the Hormone tablets (I am Hormone Postive)
BUT NO CHEMO.
Not worrying about the wednesday tests - i would have to be very unlucky for further spread from a tiny 8mm tumour and one node!
So best wishes to everyone will keep you psoted.
Sorry this thread is a bit me me me

Re: Jan 2012 Surgery Buddies

Hi Chascat,

I know it's so dissapointing isn't it. Iwas told no node involvement but found 1/5 in the SNB. Having full clearance (and a bit more boob gone as one margin not quite clear) on Wednesday. We can keep each other company on our recovery!!

I suppose we should be thankful they can be so precise, imagine if they didn't find it..... positive thought!

Kitkat, shame it wasn't a good experience in M & S ... shame on them! I'm sure someone will point you in the right direction. Hope you have some nice things planned to keep you going for the next couple of weeks.

Hugs to everyone,

Re: Jan 2012 Surgery Buddies

Hi to all on here i hope you do not mind me joining you; i have found such support on here. I had WLE and sentinel node Jan 24(2) taken out and thankfully they gat all the ILC tumour and the nodes were clear so i am grateful for that and no sign in the vascular area of the tumour. My tumour was 2.2 cm and the surgeon says i am on the border for chemo as well as rads. Its usualy 2cm and above that get chemo. He says my oncologist will discuss pros and cons with me; but i am worried what should i do i got the impression they were going to leave the final say to me or will they decide? does anyone know or have any advice as i have read some women wish they were offered chemo?? confused x

Re: Jan 2012 Surgery Buddies

Hello Everyone,
How are we all! Well I took myself to the school run today and my hair had an outing! Got loads of lovely compliments but they are going to say that arent they. I've been really open with anyone who asks me and not really cared about what they thought or said..So we will see what happens when I have no hair.
So we have a few down ladies on here tonight.
Chascat really sorry you are feeling down, at least not further ops on your breast. Thats what happened to me one node out of 18 had cancer in but they did the ANC as a preventative measure. So for you I think thats good news about the nodes but not about the op. I was tearful when I found out and had the op and then after the week this week I've been better preparing for chemo.
Jayne good luck at the dentist..not much fun.
Twinky you seem to be doing better.
Debh sending hugs too..
Sassy, Alaan, the two Marys..maggie may. poppy nov.
I bet I've forgotten someone but hope you are all doing ok?
Is anyone from this group going for the meet up in Leeds on 21st. Just thought I'd check, i'm hoping to go providing i feel well from chemo..
Off to bed soonish
Lots of love

Re: Jan 2012 Surgery Buddies

Thanks all for the kind words. To be honest the surgeon all but said what was found was insignificant but unfortunately i'm now back on the treadmill of the "what ifs" and once more waiting for results. I'm trying to comfort myself that what was found was too small to show on a scan so the chances of it spreading are slim - but what if!
On a positive note he said he'd got everything out of my breast and my margins are clear so i'm really pleased about that x

Re: Jan 2012 Surgery Buddies

Hi Chascat,

I know how you feel I felt the same when they found two out of three nodes had cells in them when they had told me before the op they did'nt think there was any, its a bit of a shock I was very tearful too.

Good luck with your op, at least you will have peace of mind that its all gone.

Re: Jan 2012 Surgery Buddies

Hi Kitkat,
I went to Hair plus in County Arcade, Victoria Quarter. I hadn't planned on getting a wig but had time to kill between appointments and to far to go home. The ladies were very helpful, showed me lots of wigs. I got one free and I bought one as couldn't choose between them. The one I bought cost £249, but they take off VAT and I belong to leeds hospital fund so get half back. This wig is so close to my own hair, its quite uncanny. The free one is just as good but short and different colour and I hope to wear in the evenings! Don't know how much the free one cost. but will ask when I go back on Thursday.

Alanaa, that seems like a lot of fluid from your seroma, I just had 500mls and thought that was a lot, Going back Thursday to have more drained. I just wondered how long they do it for, I am sure I read somewhere on here that one lady had a steroid injected in her seroma and then it dried up.

Poppy, thanks
I have tried a damp flannel but woul love a small purpose pillow.I have ordered a cool jel pad from the internet that I am looking forward to getting. My surgeon wasn't keen on my Mastectomy bra. I have had mastectomy and reconstruction form my back. I have a wound under my boob and a wound up the middle. He didn't like the bra rubbing at the juntion where they meet so wearing a vest, very glamerous!
Chascat, I am sorry about your results. At least they have found it and it is small so it can be dealt with by ANC.I had a sentinal node biopsy which they said was positive so had ANC. When they took the remaining 17 nodes they were all clear. At least it can't spread now as they have all gone.
Well tomorrow got to go to dentist as tooth broken today, really don't know how I will be able to sit in a hard chair, so taking all my pillows with me and strong painkillers!
Love to all

Dear Chascat
So sorry to hear your news. I know you are upset as I was when they said I had to have ANC but on the positive side at least you know that they have seen that tiny spec and are dealing with it.
Just remember to do your exercises afterwards. I have been very lucky, no arm restrictions or seromas, sore but I can cope with that.
Thinking of you

Re: Jan 2012 Surgery Buddies

Hi everyone

Had my results today, not as good as I'd hoped but not as bad I'd feared. My surgeon said he removed 4 lymph nodes and that one showed a tiny spec of cancer, a micrometastasis. I'm bitterly disappointed but realise it could have been worse, I'm terrified now that it's spread to my remaining nodes, I'm having my ANC on Saturday so not too long to wait and worry. On a positive note the tumour is smaller than they thought, 19mm and grade 2 and is er+. Feel a bit tearful about the lymph node but expect that will get easier x

Re: Jan 2012 Surgery Buddies

Hi everyone

Thanks for your best wishes
Jayne have you tried rolling up a towel and putting it in a pillow case
or alternately i use a small memory foam pillow which is tube shaped but flat on one side it is for supporting legs or small of back. I find wearing a boring supportive bra overnight helps but i have had biopsy and, lumpectomy and dont know what surgery youve had.

sue i was advised not to drive for 3-4 weeks by my specialist surgeon because the lumpectomy is deep to the chest wall which i guess is fairly common. you need to discuss with insurance co too

Re: Jan 2012 Surgery Buddies

Morning

Just wondering how Mary M will get in with her results today. I start chemo exactly two weeks today & get sweaty palms at the thought of it! Fighting off a cold today which explains why I had flat batteries yesterday. So glad I had Dennis for 10 days to drain my fluid as some of the problems that others are having sounds horrendous. Hugs for you all.

My first day without Hubby today. Just planning on pottering about. Wanted to drive today but the roads are so slushy I don't think I'll bother. Need to try soon though as have a couple of outings planned to see friends later in the week. Hubby returns Thursday. Missing him already but I still have the three bunnies to keep me company. Bunny no. 3 Pebbles currently in the dog house for wall paper stripping by the front door....bad girlie.

Jayne, I'd be interested in that wig shop in Leeds if you have the address. I know there are several arcades. Also wondered what sort of cost they are?

Fran, good idea about your hair, think I may still have a few weeks before I start my chemo but thinking of getting it cut a couple of days before so it isn't so upsetting when it comes out.

Good luck to anyone getting their results this week. I am a bit in limbo now until I see the oncologist in a week's time.

Hi All, Just to say love and hugs to all going for results, check ups etc this week and thank you to all who have already got their results and are being an inspiration by remaining positive and up beat.Am in limbo land at the moment waiting for oncologist appt to come through. I was so tired and feeling so vague at the out patient appt with surgeon last week forgot to get all the details of the pathology apart from 1 node only affected! But know it's almost certainly going to be chemo, rads then pills and hopefully we will all be on this journey together as this forum is keeping me sane!!!Thank you all!!

Good evening to you all

Deb I had my fluid drained now 3 times and going for another check up on Monday. Got 800mls fluid drained first and second time, had a bit of a leak last week and since then didn not have to much fluid build up again (and hope it will stay that way). Have the District Nurse calling every day to change my dressing to help the wound heal but no mentioning of stopping the draining. I am always amazed at the different methodes they use in different regions for the same procedure.
Fran your short hair is rather pretty and I am glad you had fun in the snow.
Poppy nice to see that you have joined this thread. I saw your previous posts and my heart went out to you., Mary M have a safe trip to Toulouse and to all of you with results due a gentle hug.

Going to get cosy with fat cat and enjoy a big mug of coffee and watch the Biathlon I reckorded earlier.

Hi Jan surgery buddies, hope you all healing well and doing them important exercises, 🙂

Just a query thats puzzling me, had lumpectomy and full lymph clearance, at the other side of my breast away from scars i have what i can describe as pot holes appearing all over my boob, some are big and white in the hole and i can actually get my finger tip in them, looks very much like when you see people who have picked chicken pots as a child and left with pot hole scars, they not sore just concerned what they are and why appear now?

Re: Jan 2012 Surgery Buddies

Hi Ladies
Deb and Debster, I got my results Thursday, not all what I thought, had originally one lump but had 4 tumours, 3 were grade 3 and one grade 2.
Had 18 nodes removed and only one was bad! Had DCIS and invasive cancer. Still negative to oestrogen and progesterone so can't have the hormone tablets after, but now HER2 + so will be having herceptin for a year. So I start chemo Feb 24th for 18 weeks, Thought I might have been going same time as Fran,14th Feb but they want to leave me a bit longer to recover from my surgery before I start. So, should be a few of us starting chemo in the next few weeks!

Good luck Mary P, Chascat,Tracy and Poppy with your results, You will get lots of support frrom everyone on here.

Fran, Great to be prepared with your hair, I wonder how long it is before it all comes out. I had a few hours between seeing surgeon and oncologist on Thursday and to far to go home so we went to the wig shop in the Arcade in leeds and they were so lovely, so got 2 wigs. One is so like my own hair and the other is quite different and for a change, going out. etc. Really pleased with them both.

Deb, Feel for you with your seroma especially if next to your boob, must be sore as not much space there. Mine is in my back and was aspirated last week. Going Thursday to be aspirated again and now filling up fast.
I have a lot of pain between arm and boob but will try a wet flannel, I have been looking for a small pillow but think I will have to make one!
Love and hugs to everyone.

Evening everyone!
Well has everyone enjoyed the snow? I was woken up early by one very excited little girl who wanted to go annd play out and she did in her pjs and hat and everything else! I couldn't get her to come in and then her brother joined her.
Then out the front to play some more!
That's about all I've done today. I've been doing my exercises I'm off the naughty step and my arm is much better I am even thinking of driving but not sure if I should yet! Anyone know how long you are supposed to wait after anc?
I'm getting used to my short
hair Tracey, thanks. I feel the same as you but wanted my children to see me with short hair rather than long hair to no hair but that's just me. Also you may want to try the coldcap it works for lots of people I just didn't fancy it.
Mary M good luck tom!
Good luck to everyone this week! Its like each week brings something new!
So hopefully going shopping tom with my mum for scarves and hats in prep. Only 9 days till chemo day! And 9 days till I see my sister aswell.
Hope you all sleep well.

Re: Jan 2012 Surgery Buddies

Went to M&S today to be fitted for one of their mastectomy bras. I found a couple I quite liked but unfortunately was told not to get one (possibly for months) due to the swelling under my arm and across the op site. This was checked out last week and I was told it will absorb in time.

I found it very uncomfortable and not particularly pleasant, mainly because the lady doing the fitting did it up on the tightest hooks and then didn't bother to let the straps down, on any of them. I decided to give it up as a bad job and just to go to my local store and try some on for myself. I feel if I had been left to do it myself I would probably have found something that fit well enough.

I'm worried that if I don't get one sorted out before I see the nurse for the prosthesis that I may have to keep using the softie which I keep having to adjust. Alternatively I am just thinking of using one of my pre-op bras. I'm using a soft sports one at the moment.

Anyone got any views?
Thanks

Good luck to all of you getting results this week. I'm free the next few days until my next round of hospital spots Friday (surgeon to check me post MX plus a session with my BCN talking about the chemo treatment). Forcing myself to wear a bra every day to get used to it again (it's okay first, gets uncomfortable later in the day). Missing a few spoons today after being out all day for the first time yesterday. makes me feel a bit pathetic really. How can you feel so unfit 2 weeks after an op...what happened to me...lol!

Hi everyone, I don't know how I mised this thread, is it too late to join you now?! I had WLE and ANX on 11th Jan, results on 18th, and what was original grade 2 14mm, so would just need radiotherapy was actually grade 3 50mm with 12 of 21 nodes infected. I've had a CT scan, and now waiting for appointment to see Onc.
I'm hoping to start chemo in Feb, and have joined that thread.
Supposed to be going back to work tomorrow - dependant on snow situation - I need somethig else to think about.
Good luck to you all, hope you get better results than I did.

Re: Jan 2012 Surgery Buddies

Hi Ladies,

Debster thanks for remembering that, originally I was told I had two tumors but they found 3, told me they could'nt see anything in my nodes but 2 out of 3 were affected. May have to have more surgery for nodes, got to wait to see what oncologist recommends.

Sorry your results did'nt go as well as you were hoping for, but with all the treatment we are going to be getting we will get over this, all of us. Glad your back on the positive road.

I asked the BCN to drain my Seroma when I went for my results, its so painful and full but they will not do it, they say they do not want to stick a needle in it again (having had it drained twice already) cause they don't want me to get infection. Never mind about the bl**dy pain ay. At this rate I wont be needing a reconstruction cause I appear to be growing another boob.

Good luck to all you ladies having surgery or getting results this week.

Fran bet your hair looks fab.

Bless you all

Big Hugs

Happy snowy Sunday to you all!

I hope you are all OK and trying as much as you can to enjoy the weekend! I'm going to make the most of today with snow and enjoy my kids, although I have so much to organise before I go in again on Wednesday.

Fran, your hair looks great! Glad you're feeling a bit better and hope you're cold doesn't last long.

Maggie, Di & Debbie, hope you're all doing a bit better and coping with the swellings and drains. I have it all to come....!
Jayne, try a cold wet flannel rolled up, just have to remember to throw it out of bed at some point or you end up with a wet patch!

Welcome Chascat, the worst part is the waiting but try to keep yourself busy and distracted as it keeps you more positive then, difficult I know but it does work.

Debster, sorry your results weren't what you wanted, it looks like your in good company here for the next step.

Kitkat, I hope you're OK, I don't know why your consultant made that comment as it seems many of the ladies here have the same diagnosos. One out of 5 of my nodes had cancer and my consultant said it doesn't make much difference to the outcome. I've still to have the full ANC though on Wednesday. I hope you feel better.

Well I also have to make contingency plans for the staff to get to work tomorrow, not really something I think I should be worrying about right now but I want to keep in the good books at work and hey ho ..life goes on!

Love and hugs....and no toboganning!!! Sassy xx

My arm is improving each day, I had a shower yesterday and OH shave my armpit and then i remembered i was not not to have a wet shave ever again. Was anyone else told that!
Debster- sorry about your results you are having the same as me, the full monty. I had some cording from my snb but since the anc not felt a thing!

Re: Jan 2012 Surgery Buddies

Hi,
I ditto Mary P's lovely comments to everyone XXX.

Had my results Thurs, Both lumps invasive, 2 nodes with cancer, grade 3. I've been given the 5 Star All Inclusive package like some of you lovelies. Bone & CT scan, Chemo, Rads then Tamoxifen. Blown away at first but now back to my positive fighting self.

I've some cording under armpit beginning so physio has given me some exercies, OUCH! Drove myself to opticians yesterday which was fab, won't be going out today as lots of snow and don't want to fall a*se over missing t*t 🙂

debh - I remember you having your results Thurs, hope you are ok and sending you big hugs.

Take care all

Re: Jan 2012 Surgery Buddies

Dear all
Sorry not posting too often but have to say how lovely it is to read all your posts as you are all so positive and helpful. I just wanted to say a few things to everyone, dont know if the are helpful or not!
Fran - Do your exercises, I do mine 3 times a day and I do find they are working particularly with the stretches - Walking up the wall!
Kitcat - Get the cruise booked for later in the year, I know you feel news is not great but I believe you will get through it. When they did ultrasound on me they found 3 lumps in my armpit as well as one in breast so I know when i go for results its not going to be what i need to hear, but hopefully with all the positivity I get from the ladies on here I will survive.
Maggie-May, Jayne and Linda - I am now just over 2 weeks post op and the pain is worse but I think its to do with sensation returning so thats got to be a good thing.
Di - i know Newcastle well as my daughter went to uni there, love the city great shopping. She is now a teacher and lives in Tynemouth near the sea, must be because she is from Blackpool and we always lived near the sea!!
Chascat and Poppy - the very best for your results, will be thinking of you. I get my results Thurs.
Debbie - Hope you are feeling better and got rid of all that fliud.
I am going back to work next Weds but will keep in touch.
with many hugs to all you inspirational ladies on here who keep me sane reading your posts. xxxx
