Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Xena

Congratulations thats active treatment over for you, just think no more back and forward to the hospital every day 🙂 🙂

That was the same with me, mind you the area that was boosted was rather red but again within a couple of weeks that was starting to settle down. Just make sure you keep on moisturising for the next two weeks at least.

Have a wonderful weekend xxx

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Hi yes 5 boosters, all done and dusted as I had the last one today! I e been told the skin will continue to react for another couple of weeks, though the bits that haven't had the booster seem to be a bit better already!

MrsMeow, my ear has felt blocked for the last 2 weeks, the Dr has looked and said its not blocked though. I have tinnitus along with it sounding like I'm on a plane and my ear has popped a few times- very muffled

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Xena

The booster are targetted on the tumour site not the whole breast, I found that the rest of my breast during that time started to be a bit easier.  I was sore under the fold of the breast and the nipple, the rads nurse gave me some polymem dressings, which I cut up into strips and placed it in the fold, when I was wearing my bra I used to cut a bit to cover my nipple so that it protected it quite a lot from rubbing.

Are you having 5 boosters?

Helena xx

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Hi Xena welcome - am in the middle of boosters after 15 sessions on the rubbish sunbed - the pink red and sore nipple is not too much worse just a bit more of the same - I have one red boob and one white one! I am swearing by using silk squares under the t-shirt so there is no rubbing whilst gardening etc-
I went really deaf after the first chemo - in my mind it was the metoclopramide so it was stopped and got no worse - even now my hearing is affected especially when am eating - still a bit like after a swim - how has yours been affected? X

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Hi ladies. Apologies as I'm a bit of a lurker on this board more than a poster, but posting today as I'm hoping someone can answer a couple of questions for me?!

Im three weeks into rads now, just my booster week to go. Skin is a little tingly but have some hydrocortisone cream for that, getting more pink by the day and tender nipple too 😬

How much did your skin change over the last week of rads?

Also, has anyone suffered with hearing post chemo/rads?

Thank you

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Thanks Crocrazy - how is your skin now? And good luck Mrs Meow - only 4 to go!! You will soon be there x

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Hi Shefgirl,

Well done, that's brilliant.  Keep looking after yourself.  Woohoo no more visits every day! X

Hi Mrs Meow, nearly there, keep going and you will soon be ringing that bell too.  X

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Well done Shefgirl a great milestone and must feel fantastic - I completed the 15 too but need 4 boosters so finish on wed next week - having a day off tomorrow as the machine is being fixed so we both can have a lie in! Hope your skin stays reasonably ok - I believe it keeps burning for 2 weeks after the rads so we still have to slather on the creams for a while longer. Have a great continued recovery and take care x

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

So today was my last session!! What a relief!  Gave the bell a good old ring and did a little victory dance around the waiting room!  The reception staff gave me a round of applause which was sweet!  Skin is pink and peeling tonight so not out of the woods yet but at least no appointments in the forseeable future,  WIshing everyone well for their remaining treatment.  Thanks for your support over the last few weeks xx

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Hope you are all going the full Noel Coward with your pocket squares - I am sporting a rather fetching light blue spotty one today - not that you would spot it under my t-shirt haha. Had a good day with lots of energy and skin is surviving nicely - cant believe is rads number 13 tomorrow. OH put his back out today so there is currently no-one in the house who can hoover or even reach the floor as he is broken and I am too stiff - nothing is ever easy is it? Hope everyone is ok and there has been cake all round - sounds lovely x

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Haha! I’m hunting them out online 😉

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Why do you all have silk squares at home ? LOL

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

MrsMeow, that is a great idea! I’m hunting out silk squares this evening 🙂 Thank you!

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Hi everyone - hope you are all doing well?  I am so grateful for these 2 days off from the NHS sunbed!  I got an unexpected invite out for cake and coffee so that is what I have been doing this afternoon - cheered me up no end!  Boob is now looking very sunburnt and is itchy...trying to air it whenever I get the chance!  Whoever suggested using support vests and turning them inside out is a genius!  Wish I had read that before I started cutting the elastic out of mine!!  Take my hat off to anyone who is still managing to work through rads...I have been pacing myself with early nights and the occassional snooze on the sofa.  Hope you are enjoy the weekend break xx

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Sorry to hear about your pains Brumann -hope they are easing. After both surgeries I had hypersensitivity in my arm nerves all the way to the elbow - hurt worse than the breast wounds and this has worsened recently again during rads - these nerves are not in the radiotherapy area so not sure why - I wonder if the nerve endings are generally jangled in any case even if they are not in the burning zone. I was told to use different textures to 'teach' the nerve endings to fire in a straight line again but not sure if that will work on the breast and the skin is so precious - have you tried hugging a pillow in a gentle squeeze? It sometimes helps. Another day of no fatigue for me though rain has stopped gardening and rugby putting the blood pressure up - maybe I will have an energy crash soon - hope everyone is ok today x

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Interested to hear about the silk, real silk is a great fabric next to skin isn't it.

"awful shooting pains on my breast that just wouldn’t ease."

There are a few people Brumann who get this response. I was one of them, but there have been assorted others over the last couple of years who had a period of odd shooting pains during rt. When I asked my team they said it was the nerves that were still trying to heal from surgery being 'jangled' (well that wasn't the word they used actually lol) and delayed in their healing process by the rt. For most people who got the odd shooting thing, it seemed to resolve after a few more sessions.

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Day 9 for me MrsM and have 3 days off now as machine is being serviced Monday.

Fatigue hit me like a brick wall yesterday but not too bad today but this evening I’ve had to resort to taking a few Co-Codomol as I had awful shooting pains on my breast that just wouldn’t ease.

Tucked up in bed now and looking forward to my “long weekend” 😂😂

Glad today was a good one for you, long may it continue

Enjoy your weekend

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

How is everyone this evening? 12 rads sessions done for me and only 7 to go - that has crept up so quick. Have had a really good day today the skin has been less sore - I was thinking when it was getting sensitive this week that it would just get worse and worse but today has been a cracker. I was interested to hear your discussions of tops from M and S - I am allergic to metal so struggle in any case to get crop tops etc with no catches - am currently swearing by using silk squares the type that go in the top pocket of a suit - they have been perfect every day under a t shirt and dont move around - I would recommend this for anyone with a 'fold' under the breast (well we aren't as pert as we used to be) Have a lovely weekend every one - be good to yourselves xx

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Thst’s wonderful ‘I don’t believe it’, thank you so much! Ours is such a small M&S, I think I’ll do some online ordering of a few sizes 🙂
All best wishes to you xx

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Hi reboot.

I moved on to M & S pure cotton vest with a cotton insert bra . I eventually wore it inside out so the elastic did not rub the area underneath the breast. It looked fine inside out and you could not tell apart from the labels along the bottom side which I cut off.  Not tight at the underarm and also good in the evening just to wear as a T shirt and drop the top part down to let the breast breathe if you can.If you can try one on first as I went up 2 Sizes knowing I wanted it with good room in the days ahead. It was lady bowler who suggested this one and she was so right. The other good thing about it is it has adjustable straps so if the area around the SNB is exactly at the same area you can lengthen or tighten or loosen the straps to move out of position on one side.

Good luck with it all, you are heading in the right direction. Cream, cream and more cream, lots to drink as well. I kept a little tub of cream with me all the time and one by the bed to top up around the nipple area as that's where the rubbing may get a bit much.

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Good evening ladies,

I started my rads last week and I've got number 9 tomorrow. My skin has just started to feel slightly sore and so I was looking for recommendations of super soft and comfy bras/bralettes/etc please? I tried going without but that just lead to more rubbing and I've been mor comfortable today wearing a bralette I picked up from Gap, however it lines up right where my snb scar is and I know that'll rub and annoy me soon enough!

Any recommendations, gratefully received. Thank you so much and I hope rads are treating you kindly x

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Crocrazy and Shefgirl - hope you are both doing OK today.

x Fiona

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Sorry to hear you are suffering Crocrazy and really hope that you turn a corner soon.  I'm off work so getting home, closing the curtains and airing my boob to try and cool it down!  It is pretty pink and getting pinker.  Have a visible tan line now too!  2/3 of the way through the treatment and counting the days although realise that the 2 weeks after the treatment may well be difficult.  Pushing on. Take care everyone xx

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Hi Fiona,

Thank you.  Sorry to hear you are having bother.  Hopefully the dressing will do the trick.  They are looking after you by the sounds of it which is great.

I'm suffering today, under my arm I have lost some skin and its raw.  Under my boob is also starting to do the same.  I removed the dressing tonight and some of the skin came off with it.  They did warn me it would probably get worse before it got better.  Apparently it peaks at 7 days after finishing.  I think it is just a case of keep going and applying the gel and dressings.  Hot prickly feeling in my boob too and my scar seems to have gone lumpy.  Never mind, I am taking painkillers too which is taking the edge and telling myself it must mean it has been working x

Good to hear from you Nuthatch, glad you are doing ok x

Hi Shefgirl and Mrs Meow, keep going, you are getting there x

Great tip I Don't Believe It, sounds like it would be much comfier that way round.  Well done on having your flu jab too, I have been too much of a chicken to go this time, they normally nab me on my asthma review so I just didn't go! x

Hope everyone else is ok too x

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Hi Shefgirl - yes we are day 9 twins - though I have 4 booster sessions too so don't finish until 14th - Valentine's Day Am sore now - like a joggers nipple but all over - really stingy. Is not too bad but am worried that there is not much we can do to stop it getting worse and there is still a long way to go. The traveling is not too bad - a bit tedious - but it has to be done- I will freely admit to hating every pothole on the 100 mile trip with a vengeance! Hope you all have a lovely evening - I tend to go to bed late but having a rest in the afternoon this week as last week was so busy I promised myself to look after myself better. We are all so different and there are lots of ways to be good to ourselves I suppose - mine still involves chocolate too! xx

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Hi Mrs Meow - good to hear from you. Had been wondering how you were getting on particuarly with all the travelling?  I have been pacing myself and getiing into bed at a decent time as felt very tired several nights last week.  Are you finishing on 7th Feb like me?  Hope so. Take care of yourself x

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Thanks for the up-date I don't believe it.  I am on day 9 rads with 6 more to go.  I too have a pink boob and pink spots underneath - using a fair bit of H & B Aloe Vera which is helping and will look into the antihistiimine option if it starts to feel very itchy. Also good to know about the flu jab.  Take care x

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Many Congrats Crocrazy - just keep an eye on your skin.

Feeling a bit fed up today as I was back at the hospital yesterday to get my skin checked.   I was in a bit of discomfort on Friday and couldn't wait to get my bra off.  It got worse over the weekend so rang the Unit yesterday morning, went in and now have a dresssing under my breast and have to wear my bra 24/7 to keep it in place.  If I don't get on with the dressing I can go back and they can try some creams but I suppose I am lucky that it has taken this long for me to have any issues. Just a bit frustrating when it was all going so well......

Sorry for the moan Ladies.......

Hope everyone is doing OK today.

x Fiona

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Hi I Don’t Believe It
Lovely thank hear your update and that you are doing well post radiotherapy. Drinking andmoisturising do seem to be key. Your inside out vest top sounds like a very useful tip too! I’ve been fortunate with clothing because, with nothing to support, I haven’t needed a bra of any sort and have just worn cotton tshirts - so I rubbing at all. Glad all is well, and thanks for reporting back. Onwards to our new normal now! X

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Eleven days post radiotherapy now and all is well. I have a pink boob and a rash underneath. I also have an area on the top which has a rash too. Went for a flu jab on Saturday as my Doc says I am now entitled to it because of the diagnosis! When there spoke and showed all to the nurse who incidentally used to work in a breast cancer unit at the hospital.

As the rash area is quite itchy she suggested an anti histamine so she looked up and said I could get Lorotadine. This does not contradict the Tamoxifen. Taken it for 4 days now and no more itching and the rash has really settled down.  It was never sore. It looked like a rash caused by too much cream.

Still creaming up every night and morning with Zerobase cream from the Rads team so no breakdown of skin so am pleased at that. Still applying very thinly the 1percent Betnovate hydrocortisone cream again from the Rads team but on the nurses suggestion only on the areas with the rash. I don't know whether it's this cream or the anti histamine that has settled all down.

Because of the rash underneath I started to wear the M & S cotton bra vest inside out so no elastic was rubbing. Does not look any different when on but certainly a lot softer on the skin.

Fingers crossed I have really peaked after Rads finishing. It certainly feels like that.

Only had one hot flush so far but that was more to do with wearing padded coat, fleece, scarf, and gloves in the car  and hubby was taking care of me as it was so cold outside and had bumped the heating up to 25 and had put the seat heater on🌞 Aww bless. Xx

I wish everyone still going through and still to start all the very best. Please look after yourself, drink lots, and learn to love your cream as it definitely helps.

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Hi Mrs Meow,

Thank you.  I love the thought of foot dancing! Well done, another one down.  Enjoy having a rest, sounds like a perfect plan x

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Thank you Charys, Nuthatch, Shefgirl and Ann.  No bells at my unit, but I did do a ceremonial depositing of the modesty tabard they gave me into the laundry basket as I left for the last time.  I think the poor chap who was waiting to go in to have his treatment thought I was mad! I feel a bit wired tonight, sort of wound up but relieved too.  Odd feeling.  My burny bit are sore and I don't think I am going to be able to put any deodorant on tomorrow, too sore.  Never mind, onwards x

Hope everyone else is doing well x

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Well done Crocrazy - hope you are celebrating - so sad you have burns to deal with though - hopefully they will turn a corner soon. Wonder what my tune will be tomorrow -the radiographers say they like it when I am in as they get a funky musical 5 minutes - but yes it is hard to keep still - have mastered the art of dancing with the feet with everything else keeping still! After a ridiculously busy few weeks am finally resting today and having a bit of a Real Housewives binge - hope everyone's Monday is peaceful xx

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Yay, Fab Crocrazy!!! Yes, do stick around as long as you want to, it’s so good to see those further down the road supporting those coming up behind 💕

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Congratulations Crocrazy - so pleased for you x  Did you get to ring any bells?

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Yippee Crocrazy! Lovely to have got through that lot. Hope you’re not feeling too tired out. Any celebrating? Day 12 post rads for me, and happy to report that energy levels are fine so far. Still drinking lots, and moisturising. Not really sure when I can ease up on that! Playing it safe. Anyway, big cheer and congratulations! 🎉 x

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Well done and HUGE congratulations Crococrazy  !!!!

Oh yes, PLEASE please do stay around, we need people here to give the positive stories and help to the newly diagnosed.

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Hurrah, last one done!  Can't really believe it is all done and finished, so relieved.  I am still suffering with burns under my breast and arm, but got some more dressings today and my GP is on the case getting me some more gel.  Thank you to everyone on this forum who has supported me along the way, it's such a brilliant place and I am so glad I found it right back in October when I was flapping about going to the breast clinic.  Can't thank you enough ladies.

Very best wishes to everyone who is still going through treatment, I am going to stick around if you don't mind as its great to see us all getting through this stage of treatment and moving on to our new kind of normal x

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Today was session 8 out of 19 - yeay The staff turn the music up really loud for me as it helps with the huge fear I have of the machine - today the song that came on was burn baby burn !! Hope everyone is ok today x

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

How many sessions of rads have you had Mrs M?

Sorry youve been made redundant but you can now put all your energy into getting well

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Hope everybody has had a good weekend 'off' - haven't written on here for a while as had a mad busy week. Unavoidable social things on which mostly have been nice but sometimes swimming upstream in treacle equivalent with the tiredness - am hoping for a much quieter week this week but this only gives me more time to think which can get a bit overwhelming too - it has been quite some 8 months for us all one way or another. Am sore now on the skin - like a sort of all over joggers nipple - have been told not to wear any bra by now but has been really helpful using my OH silk pocket square over the whole breast under a t shirt - worth a try if anyone else has sore but not unbroken skin. Had to cope with finishing work this week as was made redundant so have now officially finished and no more salary coming in - thankfully the Macmillan advisors think they can award us a travel grant which will help the total of more than 2000 miles which we will have done by the end of the sessions! Phenomenal amount! Hope everyone's treatment goes well tomorrow and you are all looking after yourselves, Mrs M xx

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Ah good about the sore throat, I read a few threads after reading your post, and they all indicated the same - the rt didn't reach the throat area, and they were told it was unrelated and co-incidental.

Have a good weekend off ladies, take it easy and RELAXXXXXXXXX (if thats what you want to do, if you don't then go WIllLLLD)

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Hi,

The weekend, yay!  I have come away with some gel and dressings today.  The sore area under my boob has broken, very painful now.  Woke me twice last night.  Funny foam like dressing which I have wedged half stuck on chest and half on underside of boob, sort of folded under.  Feels a bit odd but covered the sore bit.  Hopefully it will do the trick.  One more to go x

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Hope that your throat improves soon. Weekend off - yippee!!

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

4th day done and looking forward to 2 days of not having to travel

radiologist confirmed problem with swallowing and sore throat not related to radiotherapy (thankfully)

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Hi Charys

no throat seems ok. It’s hard to explain, it’s like I’m having to swallow 2 or 3 times to do 1 swallow, I know that’s sounds strange but I can’t think of how to explain it. It’s as if my throat is really dry.

Re: January 2018 Radiotherapy

Hi Crocrazy, only 2 to go.... brilliant news!! My appointments are a bit all over the place but a consistent pattern this week has meant that I  have had a rads "buddy" to chat to which has been great....in fact I have noticed how friendly other patients are in the department - think we recognise we are all in the same boat and wishing each other well.  WIshing you well for your remaining treament days xx
