Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Hi I am new to this I am 34 and I had a lumpectomy and 15 lymph nodes removed on the 6 June, my cancer was grade 2 and 17mm in size and only one lymph node had cancer in it and this was just 2mm in size. I have been going back to my consultant to get the fluid drained. He believes this is coming to an end now so had made an appointment with the oncologist for next Friday. What happens in these meetings is it to discuss the treatment plan they have made for you? My consultant said he recommends chemo then the radiotherapy then the hormone tablets, which I guess is all pretty standard.
Am just looking for some advice really on what to expect from the chemo, from reading some of the threads it does sound all very daunting and unpleasant. My main concern is hair loss, my hair is my best asset 😞 I am going to ask about the cold cap but not sure if my hospital offers that. When does the hair loss start? Do you start to feel odd as soon as the chemo enters you? Do you get fat ( I have a bridesmaid dress to fit into in September) What are these injections that you have to do at home? How frequent are the chemo sessions? Why does it make your bones hurt?
I am sure all these will be answered when I go next Friday, but thought it would be nice to get response from others that are going through this. Many Thanks. Mel

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Well had a power nap after work and felt worse...ive never been good at dozing, its full bed or nothing!!.
Day 3 hasnt been too bad but definatly not up to doing more now than vegging. can see the weekend being a lost cause.

Glad to hear Marthas ok-ish, hope shes back with us soon and Lins loving the wig. I have got mine in the cupboard, but guess i should get it out to be properly styled ready for if/when the cold cap fails me.

My injections are lenograstim (Granocyte34) that has to be mixed before use so hoping the nurse will do them, although as said the one yesterday was very brusque & clearly thought i should be going to the surgery to get flushed/dressing done!.

Whats the best pain relief to take then as im confused as to what we can and cant take re tempretures etc. had a headache for the last couple of hours so will be off to bed soon.

Sandra re the buffs, i was given one free by the chemo ward on behalf of the local "stars appeal" fund raiser, they're pretty groovy and can be worn in several different ways.

Well going to try to sleep properly in between my many trips to the loo. Drinking lots still so hopefully avoiding too many side effects, last day of anti sickness so see how tomorrow goes. Have to say i tried some ginger but its not for me yuk....

Night then lovelies...

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Lins - wig looks lovely x

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Thanks for the tips, managed injection No 1 - without problem. All those croissants helping as I had plenty of fat to squeeze!!

So tired now though so early night. Sleep well dear friends. X

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Lins, wig looks absolutely fab!!!
Well I have had the day from hell, I have only had to have one of those injections 'Neulasta 6mg' and have no idea whether that is what has finished me off or not. Cried like a baby this evening and had a right old tantrum about everything and hopefully I will feel ok tomorrow! Everything just hurts and havent been able to snap out of it.
On the plus side, discovered tonight that gin still tastes like gin and red wine still tastes ok and I really enjoyed my dinner tonight. Poor OH he has put up with so much snapping and 'rubbish' today and he really doesnt deserve it I have been the bitch from hell!
Anyway, have a good evening sparklies and here's to a good day tomorrow!
Sleep well all.

TC x 4. Herceptin x 12. Cycle 1 - day 17
Yikes - will you all stop writing so much, I just can't keep up!

Jackie I hear where you're coming from. I went to the lymphedema clinic and exited full of gloom about changes we are advised to make and SEs that might occur in the future. Oh to be a woman! Rant away. Glad to hear you made it back from the bar safely though.

Fiona definitely catching up on some sleep. Almost feel normal again - almost.

Debs - yes have just felt flu\old hangover like symptoms with really dry mouth during first two weeks or so. Without raised temperature episode think the whole of my third week would have felt 'OK'. My little finger on my right hand feels a bit numb. My second cycle starts Tuesday.

Chelle yay! You escaped too. Even if the phone is a bit worse for wear. Sorry to hear about the hair loss (Janey too I think). My hair is still OK but I'm not holding out lots of hope. I'll carry on with the cold cap probably - for now at least. I am losing from down under though. My new profile pic is me in my wiggy.

Becky, thanks. Been avoiding thinking about Tuesday too much - I'm a head in sand person. Silly really. I will be with you on Tuesday my drinking buddy, I shan't let you down.

Trish probably me being stuuuupid but I can't find your message to me 😞

Vicki - yes I've to have eight injections each cycle for bone marrow. It doesn't seem too bad, just makes my long bones ache a little by the end of taking the last injection. But manageable.

Sorry if I've missed anyone out, it's taken all my chemo brain to scribe the above! Love and hugs to all, have a great weekend. Lins

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Also where is Martha I am getting a bit worried now she has been AWOL too long
marie

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Hi ladies Marie from the moonies here're, I asked about the injections as I have been having the 8 daily ones and after the second round I could hardly walk I was ok as long as I didn't straighten up and my onc said that in her opinion they worked better than the one on its own but if it was a problem they could change it next time! this time has not been as bad but it is still bloody painful.
Suffolk lady I do mine just make sure you pinch a inch and avoid the area about two inches around belly button I was told

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Hi Girls,
thanks for all your good wishes, I don't know how you manage to think clearly at the mo, I can't at all! I got Emend for my cycle 2 on Tuesday, which worked, yay! Well I wasn't actually sick this time at all, just felt bad, but took all the other after-drugs still and am feeling a bit better today (Friday) and still have another one I can keep taking as I felt so nauseous until about 3 days before cycle 2 last time.
Having said that, I did the cold cap thing again, but it doesn't seem to be working as I've used it twice now and my hair is falling out in handfuls. I am suspicious that the ones I get are not as good as the electric ones at all, they just get them out the freezer and don't seem to leave them on long enough? I am just about past caring as I have a wig ready and scarves etc and am hating the whole fall-out thing the whole time, I'm wearing my hair in a little loose ponytail now just waiting for it to all go. I can't face the chopping off session yet. Love to you all,

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Hi Jewels
Chelle your pic describes how i've been feeling. Had a good rant in my earlier 'lost' post and did feel better, also remember reading Jackie? had been feeling the same so not so alone with my anger!!
Welcome to the new jewels. Its cetainly buzzing in here. We"ll need a hotel exclusively for the Jewels come York next year. I hope all those i've missed who've had trips to the bar have got over their hangovers and the s/e's are minimal.
My mouth has been been like the bottom of a budgies cage so Vicki and other suffering, I do sympathise. I did visit the dentist before my chemo started and she said that a spoonful of Manuka Honey a day can help. It does have an aquired taste but nicer than mouthwash. Also as Nic says ice lollies are great and soft food. For me, besides the tiredness its the worst s/e so far. Tea still tastes soapy 😞
Mandra and Magnes...Yep! I had the gushing but unfortunately mine was my period. Came totally out of the blue and is so heavy, like devils blood. 5 days and its still going! Mandra I only had 2 reds so you seem to be having my share too. Lucky You! And do watch out for the tirdeness kicking in. Although others like Martha and Lins had mentioned it, it really did take me by surprise!
Joan I love your poem and your attitude and why not, your wig looks fab. I'm too looking forward to having a good hair day everyday 🙂 I recieved a hat from 'Deresina' today and so far its my favourite. I found them on ebay but they also have their own website.
I didn't get Anti Fungal pills Cress. Are they for thrush or to help your nails? I got my mum to do my 2nd injection today, I have two each cycle, I'm sure she had a little devil on her shoulder when she jabbed it in. Didnt help that she said "Oh no need to pinch some fat there's enough there" I'm taking others advice and popping the parcetamol and ibrufen, Thanks Linda.
Sorry to hear you were in hospital Faye. No wifi and signal :(. I'm glad they let you out but a shame its delayed your next trip to the bar. Rest well and take care. xx
Those with piccs i'd recommend a Limb0 waterproof sleeve. Mine arrived yesterday and i stood in the shower, water flowing over me (occasionally checking for rouge back hair, Chelle!) for a good 20 minutes. Bliss! Chelle re your hair, sorry its not worked for you, hopefully Stevie can cheer you up 😉 xx
Although I have been grumpy and Little Miss Angry your posts do cheer me up and Jackie I had to laugh at your seven side effect Dwarves. Thanks 😉
Cress...Mine's a strawberry tart from Patisserie Valerie. I go to the one in Covent Garden as a treat sometimes. And thanks Penny, I too am off to buy some Guinness. (Sorry about Naughty George x)
Anyway Jewels, hopefully I've caught up with most of you, you are always on my mind. I was sad to read about those who've lost pets. So much emotion to deal with at this time. Here's to a better few days xx
Emma xx
P.S Taylor, Well Done with the dectective work. Hopefully if i go ever MIA you'll be on the case. I'm glad Martha is ok and as we suspected 'feet up' in hospital. Atleast she'll hopefully slow down now 😉

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Ha chemo brain!!!...just managed to miss a whole page of posts!!....wig looks good Joan, my wig very straight too but am thinking of the time it used to take me to get my hair like that, so be quite nice having instant 'good hair!'
Has anybody bought a 'buff'' headwear yet? think thats the brand but you can get cheaper copies from Amazon. They are like a tube that you can put round a beany hat or you pull on & tuck ends under- bandana style ( had a demo this morn from new chemo buddy) really nice patterns etc & think its what I'll be using day to day & saving 'Dick Wiggington 'for special times (hopefully week 3's xmas etc!)

yay for all of you managing work!!...well done but look after yourselves too...you are precious jewels after all 😉

Well think off to buy some guinness soon in prep for 'low' days!!

Just seen about Martha, thank goodness she's ok!!... Good detective work TaylorJ!!....Martha hope you can come back to us soon sweetie, we miss you!!..xx

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Good afternoon ladies. Have been doing a bit of investigation work and have managed to speak to Martha's Mum. As we suspected Martha is back in hospital. Her Mum said that she is ok and that she hopes to get in touch very soon.

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Fec/T cycle 1 day 4

Afternoon Jewels,

So reassuring reading all your posts, very similar s/es as most of you. Weird mouth taste, fuzzy head etc. no sleep last night think cos of steroids, even tho took last dose before 2pm..hey ho all 'doable' as they say up to now. Friend who's just finished all her treatments tho has warned me to expect the crushing tiredness that can hit during week 2 & said just go with it.( Just as you've described Emma -Melrose)
Hats/wigs off to all you ladies with young children to run round after, I too am grateful my 2 little darlings have flown the nest. ( never thought Id say that!)

Chelle so sorry CC not worked out but least you gave it a good go!....has Martha got Stevie too?...i met 'her' (Stevie)in my wig showroom, she's very glam!! ( think mentioned I was actually talking to 'her' on her little stand whilst OH looked on bemused!! 🙂

Re the injection, Im sure the one you've had Deb must be quite strong if its just a one dose one?? Ive got the daily 7 day one & have surprised myself by doing them myself each day. Think secret is to really pinch a roll of tummy (helps if you have a spare roll or two!!) if you pinch quite hard it sort of distracts from needle which isnt that painful at all & then just push in slowly & the needle just springs back itself when empty.

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

hi all,
just a quick one, hope everyone's doing ok today, Chelle sorry about your hair. Joan - wig looks great 🙂
Day 2 Fec 1: My side effects are small but numerous so far- I have named them the seven dwarves: sleepy, rosy, sicky, windy, grumpy, burpy and achy. But none of them very bad, so that's reassuring (I'm assuming that if sickness is under control now, it isnt likely to get much worse?..)
hope you all have a good day x

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Vicki - posts crossed. Glad you made it into work, good for you. I do admin too and as it's easy and part time I've found it really good for keeping my mind occupied. Lots of love to you for your scan xxx

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

AC cycle 2 day 3

Thanks Chelle and Faye - bit of an odd picture though as I was taking it myself. Yes, wig looks great but it just doesn't look like the normal curly me, but any curly wigs I tried on looked like old ladies' hair! I feel it's so different I may as well go round with a sign on me saying yes, I'm having chemo.

Faye, so sorry to hear you had a few days in hospital and sorry it's delayed things too. Are you starting to feel better now?

Chelle, sorry about your hair, you must be disappointed. Hope it helps in some way to know you're not alone. I'm trying to regard it as a very minor inconvenience in the bigger picture. Maybe your new wig will be the best when it arrives :-).

Nausea definitely seems worse than last cycle, or maybe I was just expecting the worst last time and then expecting to be fine this time? Haven't actually been sick though so must be grateful. Went out with a friend this morning and chose a juicy water to try to be healthy - cranberry and lime. Tasted like the most disgusting drink I've ever had. I'm finding it really hard to choose things to eat and drink as nothing is appealing!

Keep looking forward, Jewels, all our SEs will pass xxxx

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Vicki - yep started with itchy painful scalp a couple of days ago and today about half fell out.
Ladies who are cold capping - don't despair it works really well for some and not for others - I will keep everything crossed that it works for you all xx

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Maxie and all -Guinness is so good for you it used to be available on the National Health! I had some when I had my first baby and was struggling to breastfeed on a busy ward! The milk came in and baby slept just fine. The senior sister on the ward told me she used to have it prescribed for poor old ladies with Pernicious Anaemia- a condition you don't see so often these days! (lack of Vitamin 12 I believe).

Before you get excited- this happened in 1977! ED did not get offered Guiness when she had her baby in hospital!

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Fec-t x6 cycle 1 day 3.

Just a quick one while at lunch...the office were suprised to see me but its been ok, im no captain of industry so admin is do-able. Nice to have something else to think about too as i do feel mostly fine and am sat waiting for some awful side effect to get me!!

Chelle and janey, sorry to here the hairs on its way out..especially as im cold capping too. Did you get teh itchy prickly scalp as a pre-warning?. Hope you feel ok once youve had some me time with the wigs/bandanas etc.

Emma nice to have you back, its so frustrating when a post goes awol..hope you can re-direct yout anger into something beneficial lol like righting wrongs or getting something sorted!

Those having the injections are they for the bone marrow?. And are they really pianful, no-one mentioned that...Mine start on sunday for 5 days although the district nurse thats meant to come late pm for my PICC dressing/flush is a right sour puss and begrudges coming so not sure i want her sticking me lol.

Im definately not getting the steriods, i asked the unit and they said that as i am having 3 days of Emend-Aprepitant,then you dont get the steriod as well?? Have to say i feel absolutely fine so not too worried. famous last words though!!

Taylor, thanks for the kind words, i do hope its nothing more than hormonal but because thats how the original diagnosis was made its a concern. Enjoy lunch.

Yes Faye, nice clean hair although looks like worzel gummidge as i had to let it dry naturally..not a good look.

Cress glad youre doing ok post bar visit..long may it last. Dont get too emotional doing the reports though.

Trish yes i have a PICC line but am told the portacath would be better for herceptin etc so have to speak to my Onc next cycle.

Right better get back to work, roll on 5pm

xxxx

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Hi Jewels

I think the bone marrow juice injections have contributed more to my SEs, headaches, joint pain, I take co-codomol as and when needed which also helps me sleep, had my last jab yesterday this round, so it will be interesting to see how I feel going forward. OH prepped the injection before he left for work, so I just had to stick it in, don't like it one bit though....

I'm going to read up on all things mouth care today as mine really is not nice, I'm still only using normal toothpaste (Macleans) some make me gag and basic mouthwash, think I need to upgrade, the corners of my mouth are sore too, Im even finding tea less enjoyable, coffee will probably be a waste of time too so it looks like Lucozade and water for me, oh and may try a drop of the black stuff this weekend

I'm going to enquire about a portacath rather than a picc line, sounds better to me, not sure if my hospital offer it.

Chelle, so sorry it's bad news hair day, I know like me you were hopeful of CC working, get those wigs out, I'm sure you'll look gorgeous however you decide to manage this. Got me thinking that my turn may well come next week or cycle 2

I think it's just Janet C at the bar today, wishing you well, it's not so bad and a doable day to all you gems....

Trish xxxx

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Ah Chelle so sorry the cold cap didin't work. I'm getting mine shaved tonight. Only the odd hair is coming out but want to get to it before it starts in clumps. We can be miserable together.
Nicj- hopefully no more se for you today lady.
Cress-glad you're feeling ok, get those reports done!!! no twagging coming on here.
Debs - don't feel guilty about not feeling up to things, if you need to rest then thats what your body is telling you it needs.
TaylorJ- enjoy lunch trip
Emma - I felt tired all the time too, even into week 2. The only day I had any energy I went out and ended up in hospital the next day, so I'm all for doing nothing.
Vicki- hope your hair is feeling nice and clean. Have good day at work.
Jmeg -my mouth felt really dry and just weird. Its back to normal now though ready for cycle 2.
Gussie - glad you're feeeling perkier.
Ambercatz - hope district nurse visit was ok. Have good day.
Jayney - well done on the head shave. I'm hoping to feel like you a bit sad but relived at the same time. I'll let you know later.
Well after my stint in hospital I feel out of synch here, need to go back and re-read some posts, as there are soo many new members and I have lost track of where we all at with our bar visits.
I'm still not dress so better go and have shower etc, catch you later.
Keep smiling sparklies.
Faye

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Well I've shed a few tears and the hair is no more. I'm not posting a pic in my wig cos it looks stupid so I'm in a bandana til new wig arrives. Cannot believe how my hair came out this morning! Lost a tiny bit yesterday but it was in handfuls today. Oh well at least I'll be one of the pixies in York now x

Joan - spotted your new profile pic, your wig looks amazing xx

Well if not to top off the day from hell I've got the period from hell as well (but car passed its MOT with no work needed so thank The Lord for small mercies)

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Morning Jewels!
Well I am enjoying being virtually side effect free apart from a few aches. Managing to get out and about more and off out for lunch with OH today. Am not looking forward to my 2nd trip to the bar at all but know that I have to keep going. Still it will be 2 down, 4 to go.
Chelle, sorry to hear about your hair loss, you had your cocktail the day before me. I have washed my hair today and lost a bit of hair but will be inspecting my pillow in the morning! Hope your phone is back up and running, I dropped my son's phone in a stream once and managed to dry it out by taking the back cover and battery out then putting them all in a bowl of rice for a couple of days.
Vicki, I was given steroids to take for 3 days starting from the day before chemo and my chemo notes said that they were to help stop an allergic reaction to the drugs and to help combat fluid retention. I also got antibiotics to take for 10 days from day 5 and anti fungal tablets to take from day 5 for 7 days. Both I think are just preventative measures. Sorry to hear that you have got to have an ultrasound scan on Tuesday, but it is best to get it checked out. Will be thinking of you.
Becky, enjoy your family camping trip this weekend, have always wanted to go to Corfe Castle, maybe will try to in the summer hols.
Nicj thanks for all the combating side effects tips, you are building up quite a list! What a fantastic fund raising achievement, well done you!
Marion, your OH sounds lovely, I can imagine that he must have found the clipping experience tough. Your scarf looks lovely by the way.
Debs, I took paracetamol regularly for 3 days starting on the day of the jab and this helped ease the bone pain.
Gus, good to hear from you, hope you are managing ok on your own. Keep posting on here for company and to get lots of virtual support.
Good luck to Janet and Katherine for today.
Enjoy the rest of the day Jewels. It's raining here so might have to dig out my boots for my lunch trip.
Martha, please get in touch soon. Xxx

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Pointy, I felt horrible after that injection too-the ache in my femurs really got me down but it does pass. I found a hot water bottle on them helped a bit. I really fancied a hot bath but have to keep picc line dry and even though they've given me a waterproof sleeve I musn't submerge it so the idea of a bath with my arm up in the air didn't sound too appealing. I am going to ask them next time about pain killers for it as it was the worst bit.
My OH was going to do my injection but as he didn't even read the instructions(what man does?) I was somewhat dubious so I fetched my neighbour instead as she has a diabetic son and has done it before-I will trust him next time now he's seen what he has to do.
Regarding nails-a lady having chemo the same time as me was told to take her nail varnish off-anyone else had this or know the reason why as I was planning some dark purple nails.
District nurse just arrived so am off-hope you all have as good a day as possible.

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Good Morning Jewels,

I have popped in from the February Valentines with a useful tip for those suffering bone pain after the single blood boosting jab the day after chemo. My Oncologist told me to start a course of Paracetamol immediately after the jab. Take 2x500grm tablets immediately after the jab and continue every few hours for 3 days. (no more than the maximum daily dose on the packet). Then stop. This fills your body with painkillers and helps prevent the pains from even starting.

This has worked for me. I haven't had any bone pain at all. Remember to take your temperature before you take the tablets as Paracetamol can mask a high temp. I took the tablets 3 times a day for the full 3 days.

Best wishes and good luck to you all, Linda xxx

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Hi Jewels
Hair finally given up the ghost and I have shaved rest offf. I was dreading it but to be honest my hair was looking so dreadful I think it is an improvement! Only problem is that my wig is just not right. I feel really silly in it and I regret being persuaded to pick it. I have ordered a couple more online but they haven't arrived yet. Am wearing a turban at moment but don't know if I could wear it outside. I suppose I will just get used to it. Second dose of poison due next Tuesday and getting more and more anxious. I think I am more worried about seeing the Onc. than the actual treatment - at least I know what to expect from that. Hope eveyone's se are getting better. Jayneyxx

Morning All
I am worried!! You are all doing so well and up until I had that blooming injection the day after cocktails I was not to bad at all. It has made every bone in my body ache and I can feel each and every one of my vertebrae..................
I was so determined to be up and about today but I feel so rubbish, am I being a big baby or are you all making super human efforts??! Injection was Wednesday and felt rough yesterday and still today......aaarrgghhhhhhh!
Suffolk Lady, my friend came round and gave me the injection, I didnt even feel it although it will be me or OH doing it next week.
Have a good day all.

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

T x 3, Fec x 3 cycle one day two

Morning precious jewels
Well the sleeping pill worked a treat and I feel really quite good considering. Slightly dry mouth and craving fresh fruit! See how long that lasts when I get to Valerie Patisserie to buy ES his favourite croissant - we having breakfast together so I can help him with a job application - I knew I'd come in handy at some point in his life! only took 21 years!
I've had a gentle request from work to finish my school reports so that's my day accounted for - it'll take my mind of giving myself this bloomin' injection tonight - for those that have already done it - tell me it's a doddle please??!!
Can't remember who's at the bar today but hope everyone is feeling good. Worried about our Martha though - hope we hear soon.

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Well I'm now Little Miss Frustrated! Half my post has disappeared and my picture has gone AWOL! Grrrr! I did post to some of you personally but the bottom half of my post has gone?!

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

FEC-T. Cycle 1 Day 12
Morning! I've not posted for a few days but been following your posts. Besides the initial hangover of the first few days I've felt fine, had loads of energy and although my taste buds had gone AWOL it was doable. On Tuesday, day 9, after a great day I was suddenly overwhelmed with tiredness and went for a lie down at 5pm, I slept for 5 hours! Missed dinner, good job I've got a keen chef in my MS, but worse missed the chocolate brownies and ice cream I had brought the boys as a treat 😞
So Day 10 and 11 were slow and lathargic with everything seeming such an effort. And I've been so angry!

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Morning all,

well I know I was an advocate for the cold cap but it hasn't worked for me. Woke up this morning and about half of my hair has fallen out so I off to get the shears and to dust off Stevie

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

FEC x 3, T x 3. cycle 1, day 4
morning all. have laid low since my first trip to the bar. But mostly doing fine. First night was weird - FEC for me is one hell of a floaty trip plus occasional heart pumping & brain racing but thank *%#! the anti-vom tabs are doing their job. (I'm taking domperidone & steroids, not sure if DP reminds me more of champagne or mafia). Was sent home with a packet of stronger anti-vom tabs but haven't needed them yet. Seem to be eating okay and sleeping more like normal now. My skin feels like its drying out from the inside, so I'm slathering myself in E45. Yesterday I seemed to have sleeping sickness but feel perkier today - right now. We shall see. I get my dog back today- can't wait.
haven't had chance / energy to scroll back to see how everyone else is doing, so will play catch-up as best I can.
Gus x

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Morning Jewels been in bed a mere 5 hours and the GREMLINS have been who or what has took my COFFEE day 4 after first bar visit and mouth feels like something has died in there, and someones given me my mothers knees (think that was the injection thing)
Didnt get chance to post or catch up yesterday first day back at work so was little bit tired, not in today till 12-7 so hopefully things will improve before then, cant beleive how busy everyone seemed to be yesterday seem to be running at about 50 posts a day, need to give up work to keep track of everyone, hope nobodys having it to bad out there some of the posts had me howling with laughter others had me in despair so glad my 4 angels have grown up dont know how i would be coping with school runs after school clubs and everything else,
Well better go and take dog for walk and start the day and find a subsitute for coffee !!!!

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Oh faye sorry you were incarcerated...rubbish not to have any outside contact either. Hope you build yourself back up ready for the next lot.

Nicj re dentist I went as was advised to, haven't read the article yet but I go to dentist regularly anyway so she just double checked everything but all was fine. Will follow the link though. You were up late/early hope all ok. ..

I'm still feeling pretty okay although not quite as chipper as yesterday, a bit more headache-y but have taken my emend and off to wash my hair..One of the allowed 2x a week washes lol. Then all being well its off to work want to get a couple of days in before my low week as I'll be working from home then.

Hopefully every one else is managing their side effects alright although as Sandra mentioned Martha must be laid up so really hope she's back soon.

Have a good day jewels, will catch up in my lunch break.

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Hi to all
had great day at chemo clinic! spent 9 hours there, finally got first dose of herceptin started (naff veins) will have picc fitted next go (july 18th) but today i have to have 1st dose of chemo drugs, so that will be fun, have also have to take steriods for 3 days and 5 days of injections, will have 17 doses of herceptin, would rather have had a portacath, sounds much better, (does it stay in for longer).
how often do you have to have heart checks while on herceptin? have been told different times by nurses, also one nurse tells me not to take paracetomol as it can mask a rising temperature, but another nurse gave me some yesterday as i had a fuzzy head.
good luck to all going to bar today, will be thinking of you all
xx

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Early nights all round tonight I think!...funny nobody at Cocktail Bar tomorrow....they must have sold out!!

Whoever mentioned Guinness, yes Ive heard thats good for you especially in your low week, Im getting some anyway ( any excuse for a drink!!) & as Ive gone right off wine it might have to substitute....I am only day 3 now tho so prob shouldnt be even thinking any alcohol....but if its medicinal! 😉

Vicki, I have a lovely little robin who visits me in the garden most days, he might think Im his mum at the mo!!..xx

Chelle where did you find that picture of my hairy back!!!! (Only joking ladies..Im not quite that ape like!!)

Faye so sorry you were another one in hospital, that sounded really isolating with no tv or wi-fi etc. 😞 Haha sorry about the name change, only just occurred to me that you'd think my name was Maxine or something when we go to York & I wouldnt be answering you!!...so decided to fess up now. So glad Meggy /Agnes fessed up too or we'd be calling her Megan in York too!!

Im fearing that Marthas ended back in hosp too hope she's ok, I have her mob numb & have sent a text but no reply which makes me think prob is hosp with no signal etc. 😞

Night night Jewels xx

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Aw bless Faye - looks like I've had it easy then as they are hopeful my stats will be ok to do cycle 2 next week. I too am avoiding contact with anyone and everything! Car booked for MOT tomorrow so OH is having to go.

Trish - exactly what Cress said - I have a portacath as I'm having 18 herceptin and it's great as completely under the skin just under my collarbone. Can feel a little lump as there is a metal disc with the rubber port the middle but whilst I was in hosp this week they only had to stick 1 needle in it and they did all my bloods, saline drip and antibiotics through it. quite a few Jewels also have piccs but you need to cover the part that's external for showering etc. Cress sounds like you are at a fab hospital x

good luck at the bar tomorrow to Janet & Katherine xx

im off to bed too - it's tiring work doing nothing all day xx

night night twinkly ones xx

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Evening all,
This week must be the week for hospital stays. Went in on sunday with temp and sore throat, came out tonight. Had to stay in a while as my neut count was 0.00 for the first few days, they let me out today even though still not good but they said I seem sensible (wait til they see us in york) so let me out. Got 6 days of antibiotics and got to stay confined to the house for a few days.
Have to say the stay wasn't that bad, staff lovely, food nice, only problem no telly or wi-fi and wasn't allowed outside for a walk so think I would have started to go a bit dolally if in longer. My sister said 'it's like centre parcs in here'. Agree with you Chelle though about meausiring your own wee-not dignified.
Chelle- please can you change my cocktail date as it has now been delayed a week - new date 11/7.
Welcome to all newbie.
Can't get my head round these name changes.
Hope all those that visited the bar this week are feeling ok.
Hope all Jewels are spakling.
Faye

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Hey Trish, The portacath is a tube put into a vein in your chest and has an opening (the port) just under the skin. Medicine is given and blood is taken from here. The picc line has a part in your vein in your arm and an external part that comes out - which is why there is a greater risk of infection and they need a bit more careful managing. I'm super lucky that my hospital does Portacaths for people like me who are only having 6 cycles.
Feeling really sleepy all of a sudden so going up to bed with my Pukka detox tea and Wednesday's Apprentice!
sleep well sweet Jewels. XXXX

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Hey Cress

Welcome back from the bar and thanks for the tips. I'm a bit confused, what's the difference between a PICC line and Portacath? or are they the same thing? I only have 3 more chemo cocktails but then 12 x Herceptin so don't want to keep bashimg my veins, I'm having PICC fitted next cycle.

Ref the guinness, it's good for you isn't it so I may well try a drop of the black stuff.....

Trish x

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Yay Jackie - glad you are safely back from the bar x have you got any antacids as it may be worth taking one tonight as I think some who are sicky tend to be because the acid sets in quickly. Take it easy x

Trish - good to hear from you. Any hair shedding will usually start after week 2, mine is coming out but no patches yet and not noticeable anywhere (but then I do have a pumpkin head and have a lot of frizzy hair!)

Mandra - I looked the same on the steroids bright red chest but 1 bright red cheek as well (face variety!)

ooh Martha - getting really really worried now ........ Hope you're ok xxxx

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

6 xFEC-T Cycle 1 day 2 (counting day 1 as chemo day)
Chelle thanks for the advice, i plan to work from home from day 7, and have my ultra sound on good boob tuesday anyway so hope to avoid too many nasties..but i will be wary.
I guess its because i feel fine and even at one point said to my son oh i hope theyve given me enough..mind you the chemo nurse had to drop round my stuff for flushing the PICC line and when i said i felt ok apart from the hang over-y type feeling she said thats great.

Do wonder why i havent got steriods though as you all seem to have them..maybe they only give them if theres a problem, and the emend seem to be working fine. Plus ive the bone marrow injections from sunday. I guess all hospitals are different.

Glad youre back Cress, and the nails were admired, cant say anyone notice my beyonce booty, probably because i was wrapped up in a blankets as the cold cap froze me all over...take it easy tonight anyway.

Love the pic sandra, i have a robin thats always in my garden and this years hes not lost the red breast at all...i shall think of you next time i see him.

Welcome ambercatz, our group must be the most busy/popular on the board, must say something for how great we are lol 😉

Well hope everyone else is feeling ok and fingers crossed the side effects dont increase, i am almost sat waiting for something to "happen". Also to all those reading but not up to posting, stay strong, keep shining and hope your back with us soon
Lots of love
xxxx

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Trish, I've got to inject myself tomorrow for 8 days - I'm really not looking forward to it - and I'm on my own so I've got to 'man up! and do it! At least it won't be hard to find a good handful of stomach to grab onto!
As you're having Herceptin - would your hospital fit a portacath? I'm getting one and I'm only having 6 cycles. It does mean easy access and easy maintenance. I have rubbish veins - proved today - so it's really going to make life more bearable and you can still bath etc without worrying. Plus they only need flushing every 3 weeks.
And one last thing.. My BF is 2 years clear but when she was on chemo she said the only thing she could face drinking (alcohol wise) is guiness, but she bought it in cans so no need to go to the potentially infectious pub!!
Take care Cress x

Re: 'June Jewels' - Precious and shining through :)

Hi all, back from the bar, safe and sound, had to wait a while but once in it went ok, weird fizzy bum feeling and nose tingling that I didn't expect! Nurse was lovely. OH had sympathetic side effects throughout... Am now on sofa, have eaten, am drinking lots, nurse said not to take any more anti sickness until morning, because I didnt get my doses until 3-4pm...this makes me nervous (no emend for me until next cycle if I am proven to need it). I might take one before bed anyway because of some of your experiences with middle of the night vomiting. Just feel a bit spacey and odd but nothing more so far.
Glad to see my drinking buddies are mostly doing ok so far too.
Marion, photo looks great!
And very funny that Maxie and Meggy are the dogs' names 🙂 I fear they will stick.
God I'm glad today is over.
Night night all x
