My best wishes to you and hope that you are coping ok.
just thought I'd add my experience to your replies.
Although I am older than you, I am overweight and with large breasts. I had a grade 2 invasive ER+ 8/8, HER- 23mm lump, nodes were clear. In the end I opted for a mastectomy without reconstruction, as I will be loosing weight and my other breast will reduce in size because of that and I didn't want uneven breasts at the end, I also wanted to know for certain that the cancer had gone. Also by having the mastectomy I didn't need to have raidiation treatment or chemo.
Do speak to your breast care nurses, ask them any questions you have, they are there to help, mine were all lovely and so helpful.
I had my single mastectomy 7 weeks ago now and have my permanent prosthesis in my original underwired bra and you can't tell any difference from before. I am very pleased with the final result, and I can get smaller ones as I loose weight.
I finished taking painkillers on day 4 (I have not had any pain since, just a tightness which gradually improves) had the drain out on day 10, started driving again on day 12. Drove 110 miles and went on holiday (in the UK) on day 16, family could not believe how well I recovered. I have done the exercises religiously (they definitely help) and listened to my body and been as active as possible.
I have just started on my hormone tablets and am also taking various fizz vitamin drinks to hopefully keep any side effects at bay.
Like others I have taken one stage at a time and not thought too far ahead. To be honest recovering from this has been easier than when I broke a bone in my foot!
My best wishes, and good luck with your journey. Xx
Hi Pink, sending a hug as you seem so very anxious. As you know, I wanted an mx, but after being told statistics I was more open to a WLE. The team, which meets weekly, had a treatment plan for me, which has pretty much happened. I wonder if your plan for both procedures has been outlined as this could have a bearing on your decision? Before signing any consent forms I did get hold of my consultants hand and asked him if I was his mum/ sister/ partner would he be recommending this! When he replied immediately in the affirmative I signed. I had met him and my BC nurse a couple of times and had built up quite a rapport, so felt there was trust there. It did make my decision easier. Can you phone your BC nurse and have her go over everything again? Mine never minded me phoning to clarify things. It's part of their job to help you understand procedures and why they are happening, and also to allay anxiety. I do feel for you. Please let us know how you get on. X
Hi Pink, I couldn't think of anything other than an mx when I was told I had BC. Just wanted it OUT! My Onco said research shows no difference in survival rates between WLE and mx. In the end I had WLE. My Mr. Blobby was 23mm and grade three, so I was always going to have chemo and rads. The plastic surgeon did a great job and as I have big boobs she was able to do a bit of lift and tuck and they both now match. Never did before!!😄. It's a very personal decision, but just adding my experience into the mix. Good luck. X
