Re: North Yorkshire

Hi. Would you be able to pm your email address so I can add it to our group? Our next daytime meeting is 27th November 10am - 12pm at Me and Mrs Fisher cafe on Lord Mayor's Walk. We normally have a younger women's meeting on the 2nd Thursday of the month but the 11th December will be an all age laughter yoga session at the Pig and Pastry on Bishopthorpe Rd. It would be lovely to see you.

Re: North Yorkshire

Would you keep me informed of anything happening in York. I would like to come along. Thanks X

Re: North Yorkshire

Hi, yes we have started Breast Friends York. We meet twice a month, on the last Thursday of the month we meet from 10am-12pm at Me and Mrs Fisher's on Lord Mayor's walk. This is open to all ages. We also have a younger women's meeting on the second Thursday of the month, 7-9pm at the Pig and Pastry, Bishopthorpe Rd. We are hoping to hold a lingerie evening later this month. It would be lovely to see any of you.

Re: North Yorkshire

"Hi did.a support group ever happen?"

Not that I know of.

That doesn't stop people meeting up informally, although when I've tried to do that in the past, it's been spectacularly unsuccessful. Other counties/areas have groups that have met regularly for years and become firm friends; Shropshire and Glasgow, for example. Yorkshire as an area seems to be hopeless at this.

TBH, I'm beyond the need of a "support group" per se, I'm 3 years post-Dx now and wanting to get on with my life. The support group would have been wonderful before but as I said, most people either weren't enthusiastic or simply just didn't turn up.

Re: North Yorkshire

Hi did.a support group ever happen? Am in Bradford but.v happy to travel. Also am grand old age.of 48 so I may be too old. Diagnosed April 11, 2 surgeries, chemo, rads, herceptin x

Re: North Yorkshire

I live on the outskirts of Skipton and am quickly approaching 44! Talking weeks not years. Half way through chemo, then radiotherapy and drugs for 5yrs. This is a discussion I have had with many as most support is very city centric, would love the opportunity to catch up.

Re: North Yorkshire

We were thinking of meeting somewhere else in an evening so women who are back at work can still attend. We've got a meeting with the Bcn soon to find out what went wrong last time and get their support. We are also thinking of having a daytime meeting, possibly in the cancer care centre, which might be easier for people who are newly diagnosed.

Re: North Yorkshire

Are you going to base it at YDH?

The old one that was there had the support of BCNs but it stopped before I coud attend.

Re: North Yorkshire

Ninja, would you like to start something and work alongside us? We could do joint events and separate things.

Re: North Yorkshire

I was actually invited to join the Haven's Younger Women's Group (I had to decline as I'm over 47 which was their cut-off) so I guess I dont look like an old biddy.

I remember when I was first diagnosed and I was given the BCC leaflets. My heart sank cos all the photies seemed to be of old women with grey hair. I don't have grey hair yet. It made me feel oh so alone. When I went for chemo, the others in the room on my 'day' were old men and women. Alone again.

So yes, I fully understand your reasons for wanting to set up a younger women's support group but it leaves people like me fearful that any older women's group wouldn't have anyone in it who likes skiing, cycling, mountain walking etc like I do.

Inbetweeners' group? lol

Re: North Yorkshire

Although we're trying to set up a support group for younger women I'm very happy to meet for coffee with you. I'm at the older end of younger myself and feel bad that we can't start something that supports everyone but we'd rather start small and build on it than do something that doesn't suit anyone.

Re: North Yorkshire

Reading back up, I'm not under 48 either but I'm lively and still drink coffee!

Re: North Yorkshire

Not in that age group, never mind will keep looking.

Re: North Yorkshire

Leeman road, so can easily get to city centre. Let me know when you're feeling up to a coffee and we'll arrange something.

Re: North Yorkshire

I'm in Bish. I suppose I could get hubs to drop me off in town or something. I'm still full of stitches and clips so I can't even manage the bus just yet.
Where are you?

Re: North Yorkshire

What part of York are you? I can be fairly flexible.

Re: North Yorkshire

Sounds good but I'm fairly immobile at the moment - recovering from a TRAM flap so I can't drive 😞

Re: North Yorkshire

Hi, if you'd like to meet up for coffee message me. X

Re: North Yorkshire

Hi, I'm in York.
I've been to 2 Yorkshire meet-ups in the past; only one other lady turned up at one in Leeds in 2011 and I was sat on my own for an hour in York in 2012 for the other. If there is interest for a North Yorks group then I'm in; I don't know anyone else round here with BC.

I moved near York nearly 3 years ago in the middle of chemo but the group based at YDH (York District Hospital) fell through before I attended it so I never got to meet anyone through there either!

Re: North Yorkshire

Hi

Yes I would definitely be interested, please can you pass on the details. I am 37 years and diagnosed January 8th 2014.

Thankyou xxxx

Re: North Yorkshire

Hi Abbey and Louise, I am making progress with setting up a support group. We are aiming it at younger women, under 45 at diagnosis, because we know there is a need and we fit into that group. If you are interested message me and I'll let you know how we're getting on. Any thoughts and ideas about what people would like from a group would be gratefully received. R x

Re: North Yorkshire

Hi

I'm near Selby, would love to be part of any groups or meet ups. Have loads of support from friends but only really feel totally understood speaking to people with experience of this beggar !! I am waiting for nodes clearing then on to chemo.

Take care

Louise x

Re: North Yorkshire

Hi, I would be interested if you are setting up a support group. Let me know how you get on or if you need any help.

Re: North Yorkshire

I'm in York and always happy to meet up for coffee and cat. In fact, I'm thinking of trying to set up a local support group as there isn't one.

Re: North Yorkshire

Hi, Just seen your post. If you ever want a chat or meet up pm me. Managing to keep positive most of the time with the odd wobble!

Re: North Yorkshire

Hello to you all, I am from the Redcar area. I had mastectomy and lymphnodes removed in June 2013. I had chemo and Radiotherapy too. I am now on Letrozole. So far I have been ok on them apart from the odd hot flush and sometimes feeling very weary. I am trying to get on with life again and hope i don't get a secondry.

I expect like the rest of you I never thought it would happen to me but it has and it has to be dealt with.

I wish you all well. I am always up for a chat to anyone.

Re: North Yorkshire

Hopefully my hot flushes will improve with time. Pleased I'm not going down the chemo route as well. I'm always happy to chat if you want to. I'm sure to have questions cropping up! I'm also not good at showing my true feelings in front of others, so it's good to have this space.

Re: North Yorkshire

I get stiff joints too, mainly ankles, knees and lower back. They slow me down sometimes but I've found if I keep moving it eases. The zoladex is because I'm pre-menopausal. The injections stop my ovaries so that I can take the tablets as well. They aren't bad, certainly easier than chemo. My hot flushes didn't last too long, been on letrozole 4 months and don't get any flushes now.
We have to stay positive, what would anything else achieve? However, we have to let it out sometimes: I'm just not good at doing it in front of others! I feel more normal on here though.

Re: North Yorkshire

Tablets not too bad at the moment. Keep getting odd aches and pains, which BC nurse said could be side effects. For example, I had stiff and sore shoulder on good side for a few days getting worse, then woke up one morning and the pain had completely gone. Also get some hot flushes. Hopefully I won't get anything more than this and it keeps the cancer away.
How are you finding the tablets and what is the Zoladex for?
Thanks for replying, it helps to chat to someone in a similar situation. I really want to stay positive.

Re: North Yorkshire

In Leeds so not too far away. Been diagnosed since April and had mastectomy week after. I too am on letrozole but also have zoladex injections every month. I think we all wobble from time to time, something has to give now and again. How are you finding the tablets?

Re: North Yorkshire

Hi, I'm in Whitby. Where in west yorks are you?
I'm doing ok,I think! Keep having the odd wobble.
How long have you been diagnosed?

Re: North Yorkshire

Where abouts in north yorks? Im in west. How you doing?

Re: North Yorkshire

Hi, I'm in N Yorks. 9 weeks post surgery. Mastectomy and snb. Clear margins and lymph nodes. Letrozole for 5 years.

Re: North Yorkshire

Hi, I am based in North Yorkshire. I have been diagnosed with DCIS rather than actual invasive breast cancer but am due to have a masectomy & reconstruction very soon. They have advised that given how widespread my DCIS is they may find invasive after the operation  so all a bit worried at the moment but trying to stay positive 🙂
