No patients treated by Mr X (lead breast cancer surgeon) or any of the Plastic Surgeons at Bradford Teaching Hospitals have used PIP implants. All our patients can be reassured.

University Hospitals Birmingham (QE and Selly Oak)NHS Foundation Trust have never used PIP implants.

New Cross Hospital (Wolverhampton) - their PS confirmed that they have never used PIP implants, and gave me the ok to confirm that on the forum.

Friarage Hospital - Northallerton - Breast Care Specialist Nurse said today (10th Jan 2012) the Friarage does not use PIP implants and that they use NAGOR implants and the hospital's response is that women should go back to the surgeon who had operated on them for further help and advice.

Darlington Hospital have used PIP implants - don't know if all women treated at Darlington received PIP implants - you'd have to check with surgeon/specialist nurse.

Gloucestershire GH-NHS-FT (cheltenham General and the Gloucestershire Royal) their website now includes this statement:
"To the best of our knowledge, the Trust is confident that PIP breast implants have not been used on any of our patients. We keep careful records of the type of implant used in every procedure.
The Trust is watching the matter closely and will continue to take advice from major bodies and the Department of Health"

Countries where Governments have already advised women that PIP implants should be removed:

I saw my GP today about the PIP implants and she is going to refer me back to the hospital where I had them implanted. So now its just a question of waiting for an appointment with a consultant surgeon. One of the things that is especially worrying me & so is a question I would need to ask is if there is any additional risk to the reconstruction being disturbed or damaged, by having implants replaced. My Specialist Nurse had said to me last week that she didn't think there would be any additional risks - she said it will be a small incision and the skin on the reconstruction is healed now. She also said in her personal opinion it is probably better out than not. I imagine I'll be put on a waiting list which will mean I have to remain anxious and distracted until it happens and I have recovered from yet more surgery - hopefully without any other complications. Cursing the manufacturers on behalf of all of us women affected.

so if you had your surgery BEFORE 2001 then your implant is not affected, and you only need to worry if it went in 2001 or later and it has one of the above model numbers.
That should set some more hearts at peace.

That page also has good descriptions of other general implant problems eg capsular contracture and leakage if anyone has a troublesome non-PIP implant.

Just been on the news non of the Leicester Hospitals have used them.

I've just looked at Guys and St Thomas, who say the following
' NO Poly Implant Prothese implants have been used on NHS patients...
... a very small number of patients treated in our private patients unit, may have had a PIP implant.' helpline no: 020 7188 9988.

No patients treated by Mr X (lead breast cancer surgeon) or any of the Plastic Surgeons at Bradford Teaching Hospitals have used PIP implants. All our patients can be reassured.

This particular surgeon who says he has not used PIP implants puts the blame for the PIP implants scare at the door of the UK Government regulator http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16438219 which is the MHRA http://www.mhra.gov.uk/NewsCentre/CON137888
I tend to agree with that point of view these products were approved as a result of MHRA's actions or failings and it is that organisation that now needs to answer some key questions. The government has not handled this matter well in my opinion. Governments of Germany, France, Czech Republic, Columbia, Venezuela have all stated that the implants should be removed, UK government's take thus far is unclear and unhelpful and they themselves admit is based on insufficient data and evidence.

There is a lot of self righteous judgements being made on press and Twitter etc about women who have received the implants for purely cosmetic reasons. Even though I would never have had cosmetic surgery if I had not needed reconstruction due to cancer I think it is wrong for women who have had purely cosmetic surgery to be judged and not to be offered a replacement by the NHS if they can't get their private clinics to do so. It would be the same as if NHS started refusing patients because of other lifestyle choices like smoking and drinking alcohol - it would be wrong.

Hi Hymil, I emailed their 'patient information centre' team, and asked if they would be isssuing a statement - as we can see on here, other hospitals have been quick and happy to issue one if they know they haven't used the implants, and as you said, it SHOULD be easy to find out if they ever have.

The fact they haven't/won't makes me think they they have used them.

Not necessarily mine, although that is a concern, but they were so brilliant through all of my treatment, I'm surprised they haven't acted sooner.

It's possible the person you spoke to simply doesn't know yet, or the hospital have used some of them at some times in the past and s/he doesn't know enough about breast surgery to identify which, or else there's an issue about how to access medical records to find out about your particular case: that does take time and would be much slower than you contacting them directly on monday. If you are unlucky enough to be affected, the team will be wanting to speak to you anyway. It's not necessarily bad news for you, but unfortunately you've now got to wait through the weekend to find out. I think it's more likely to be an organisational delay, though as the NHS handles so much info, so try not to worry.

Wouldn't you think that someone, either in NHS Logistics/supply chain or else at PIP, has a massive folder full of copies of orders showing which hospitals were given (100) and returned (73) unopened so they have implanted (25) and wasted (2) between (jan 1985) and (may 2010)? Does nobody know what has actually been supplied and paid for, to whom? Really?? and we have how many accountants on the NHS payroll? And yet my bank can tell you every garage where I ever bought petrol since 1985? Ain't it astonishing.

I'm not sure how far this goes back, whether it includes the old Princess Margaret's as well (prior to c2003), possibly not. What does happen to records when a hospital relocates?

I had a call from the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds this morning to say that my implant fitted in April 2011 was safe after I emailed them to say that I thought that they ought to post a message or Helpline contact on their website.

Perhaps the BCC website can persuade the NHS, on our behalf, to issue a Helpline number for any NHS patients concerned about their own implants. This would centralise all contact and save a lot of unnecessary worrying as I am sure that they must have a database of any of their patients that may have been fitted with the PIP implants. They seem to very slow in issuing any reassurance to their patients.

Over to you BCNs on this site, can this be done please?

I'm in France, and my hospital (Institut Claudius Regaud, Toulouse)has already contacted all the women that had PIP implants there.

They used PIP from 22 Feb 2006 to 30 March 2010.

Annie, that will help a lot of people, although they may not many be registered posters here; if I had one even years ago (fortunately I don't) I would be panicking now and this is exactly where I would look for help. Wish many other hospitals would publish too.

I know this will help only a few people, but I emailed the Royal Marsden about my implant and got a short message back as follows:

"The Royal Marsden has never used PIP implants in any of its surgeries".

Oncologist without serious evidence should not say that implants cause cancer. Even if he is thinking about this. Its not allow him. I chose the following - which is less traumatic to my body. Following the principle - less cutting, less artificial devices. i don't know am I right or not. Some implants was prohibited for long time.

I had mine before March 2010 so I could still be in an at risk group. I had a breast lift with implant in my good breast as well as a recon with implant in my other breast. I've also had a recurrence in both breasts, in my chest wall in the case of the reconstructed breast. I've no idea if the recurrences were caused by the implants, I was more concerned with leakages causing rheumatoid like symptoms and hadn't really considered the possibility that it might have been responsible for the recurrence of my cancer. I've got an appointment with my oncologist next week so I'm going to bring it up with him and see what he says.

It says on the news section of the BCC website that the implants have not been used in the UK since March 2010, so if you have had your surgery since then you are definitely OK

Hi folks

You should be able to get this information on the maker of your implants from the NHS, if they were NHS fitted, or the private health company who fitted them. This is your information and your right to have it is clear within current legislation.

Although I am not affected I have also been asking the quesion around any evidence relating to increased risk, or occurence of, bc as a result of PIP fitted implants. I have not heard any data in the media and would be keen to hear if anyone has heard any hard facts around risk, increased incidence, etc. Best wishes all, J.

I had implants in france in 2006 and again in 2008, i heard something on the Radio about this and wonder if mine were PIP and if that caused my BC.

I have had them removed now but it still plays on my mind although my surgon said having the implants helped me find my lump as it pushed it further to the skin.

Has anyone got any information about whether or not women who had implants inserted along with their reconstructive surgery should be concerned about the recent news on PIP implants. The only time I've seen breast cancer patients mentioned on the news was when they said that if the enquiry reports back that all women who have received one should be offered surgery to remove them, only those woman who had the original surgery because of breast cancer will be able to have them replaced on the NHS. I'm not panicking or anything, I don't even know if my implants are effected. Is there any way to find out if I they are PIP implants, or should I just wait and see if the hospital contacts me once the enquiry has reported back. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else is in a similar position and how they feel about it?
