Re: Pets and animals

Hi Bonariensis,
What a gorgeous little duck. I've never heard of call ducks but they sound adorablle. It must be so lovely to have them in your garden. xxx

Re: Pets and animals

When I'm in the garden i can often hear a happy chorus of quacking. A friend of mine bought some call ducks to add interest to her garden. Her neighbour has a good sized pond to which the ducks immediately decamped. They have resisted all attempts to lure them back with tasty titbits. Call ducks are miniature ducks which nowadays are kept as pets.

Re: Pets and animals

I live opposite our village church. The churchyard is raised above the road and from time to time is grazed by sheep so if you look out the front bedroom window you can have a staring match with a sheep.

135.JPG

I'm not much of a churchgoer but they do say prayers for me. Most people in the village know what's wrong with me but the other day someone came into the shop and said 'Sally wants to know why they're praying for you' So i told him but i felt quite embarassed.

Re: Pets and animals

Oh tat ..sorry about your chemo prob ...it happens quite a lot ..i see it when I'm having my bone injection in chemo ward ..the nurses all run to the patient .at least they will know what to do.
Hopefully ..you will feel better .

Re: Pets and animals

She specialises in slobby cuddles, Carolyn!  My mum's visiting and Daisy almost burst a blood vessel she got so excited!!

Chemo was 'interesting'!  I had a reaction to Taxol and had a lorry load more steroids and saline.  Once the symptoms subsided (my mum said my face was the colour of cooked beetroot!) they started the taxol again at a slower drip rate.  With all the delays (staffing problems), the whole thing was over 6.5 hours door to door...!

Re: Pets and animals

Oh tat ..she is a real little darling ..gives u a focus on walking her and slobby cuddles.

Ps ..hope the chemo goes ok and gives the Mets some real welly ! Xxx

Re: Pets and animals

This Daisy (or hurricane Daisy if she's excited!), my 2 year old furry baby 😍

Sitting waiting for weekly Taxol number 2. Silly me, thought a 9.15am appt would mean fewer delays 😂

Re: Pets and animals

Wow ..what a rare thing although I think that most of us have a fear of them ( too many horror films)
We have one that flys around outside our front door ..he seems to fly low around the lamp post.

Re: Pets and animals

Today early in the morning a bat flew in through the bathroom window in the house where we are staying in France. It flew around for a while, so fast, so delicate and then left through an open window

Re: Pets and animals

No, probably not but I think they might like biscuits, especially McVities fruit shortcake which are my favourite. 😊 xxx

Re: Pets and animals

I don't suppose they'd fancy chocolate

Re: Pets and animals

Hi Bonariensis,
What a lovely thing to see. House Martins, Swallows and Swifts are amazing little animals. It's such a joyful thing to watch them swooping about the sky. They look like they are having such good fun. If it weren't for the fact they have to eat insects I'd say they have a pretty wonderful life. xxx

Re: Pets and animals

We had one house martins' nest in the eaves of our house at the beginning of the season. The owners came back in the spring, it's so wonderful to see them back. 4 more new nests appeared during the course of the summer, 2 of which fell off before being used. They are made of mud stuck to the wall with a small hole left for an entrance. The 3 remaining were strategically placed above the door out to the garden so we had to put a box below to catch the guano. They are amazing to watch and you could get a close up from the bedroom window. They have all fledged now but many are still around fattening up for the long journey south. It will be sad to see them go - wish i could join them.

Re: Pets and animals

HI Sharon,
Aren't birds wonderful. I love watching them even although we have a very limited variety of species here. I've no idea the last time I even saw a sparrow. They used to be so common. I've never seen a woodpecker although I did hear one once. I'd love to see one. We have a communal garden with few plants and no water features. Can't even put up bird tables as there are so many cats about. I suspect if we had those we might see a slightly wider variety of little species like blue tits. But I still like watching the birds no matter what kind. I have a soft spot for the seagulls even when they make lots of noise at 5am. Best wishes xxx

Re: Pets and animals

Birds in my garden..thrush .blackbird sparrow.wood pidgeon.ring necked
doves.. The odd finch..magpies seagulls occasionally. And robins my favourite little chaps
Crows..and occasional pidgeon which I dont like too greedy....i love watching them eat and they bath in my small waterfall that's lovely too
Sharon xoh next door gets a woodpecker I can see hear himx

No wonder he looks shocked!  😀

Re: Pets and animals

Oh yes ..worse than kids sometimes. This one is just over two ..very spoilt and pampered ...he's gradually eating his way through their lovely home too.
Good as gold with us though ..well not so maybe at 2am tomorrow morning when he takes over my bed is snoring and licking his man bits !!
Xxx

Re: Pets and animals

Dogs are mad aren't they. They'll eat anything. We used to have a really greedy whippet. We took her on a camping trip once and we had to keep her tied up as she kept trying to steal food off peoples barbecues. xxx

Re: Pets and animals

Looking after sons dog for a sleepover tonight.
Hrs a bit whiffy round the back end ( arnt I polite) ...apparently he's just pinched a bag of bananas off the work top ..he's eaten bananas, skin and plastic bag !!
At least he's made sure he's had his five a day today plus more. 🐕🐕🐕🐕

Re: Pets and animals

Hi Carolyn,

There is obviously something happening to little birds. I remember a few years ago I decided to take up bird watching as a little hobby and I got myself a guidebook. I was a bit disappointed as I only ever managed to spot about a dozen species locally. However, I have noticed there are a lot more buzzards nowadays. They are beautiful, just like mini golden eagles. I think I may have to content myself with identifying all the different breeds of seagulls in the park next to my house. 😀 xxx

Re: Pets and animals

Hiya waffles.
Hubby says that hawks and others are killing off all the small birds.
He used to b a pigeon fancier up to twenty years ago and saw lots of his valuable racing pigeons killed by hawks too.
The sparrows and blackbirds are really plentiful here ..sometimes we have ten or fifteen queuing up in the morning's.
We don't see so many magpies here in this house but were a nuisance at our last one.

Re: Pets and animals

Hi Carolyn,

Believe it or not, sparrows are quite rare up here now. They used to be really common when I was younger.  In fact the most common birds in gardens here used to be  sparrows and starlings but now you rarely see them,  particularly sparrows. I've never seen a woodpecker ever. It would love to see one in the garden.xxx

Re: Pets and animals

I live in Devon..we have loads of sparrows and tits as well ...they love those little bags of fatty balls and get through one a day. I laugh as like humans ..they queue in an orderly line and wait their turn!! We have a woodpecker too .
Love the cat pic you posted earlier ..it's sooo cute !!
Hugs xx

Re: Pets and animals

Hi all,

Can I start a little survey? What sort of birds do you have in your garden?

I live in central Scotland and the only birds I ever see  in my garden are pigeons, seagulls, magpies and jackdaws. I like them all and love to watch them even although the seagulls are super noisy. What sort of birds does everyone else have in their gardensxxx

Re: Pets and animals

Aww that's soooo cute waffles!

Re: Pets and animals

Always nice to adopt a homeless dog ..heart breaking to see so many in kennels unwanted.
There was something on Facebook about dogs being hung in woods in Spain when too old for use.
I'm a real animal lover and respect them and their intelligence.

Re: Pets and animals

Hi Blanna,

He is lovely Blanna. Is a podenco a hunting breed. I read an article recently about how badly some of the hunting dogs are treated in Spain when they are no longer required. xxx

Re: Pets and animals

We have had him now for nearly three years, he is adorable x

Re: Pets and animals

Re: Pets and animals

Hey guys,

we went on holiday to a villa in Spain and the owners had fostered this little boy. He had been chucked in a bin just days old with his siblings, our friends own the villa foster abandoned animals,.

We fell in love with him, and brought him home with us.

He is an andalusian podenco maneto, with a pronounced underbite and we love him  xxxxx

Re: Pets and animals

Hahaha love the dog story, Waffles! Big dogs have their uses! x

Re: Pets and animals

Hi everyone,

Since Carolyn was talking about dog poo I  thought I'd tell you about a letter I read in Dogs Today magazine several years ago. It was written by a lady who had two large dogs which she walked in her local park. There was only one dog  bin at the exit to the park  and to save  embarrassment she started to carry the full poo bags about in a tote bag while in the park. Anyway, one evening when she was just approaching the exit to the park a man accosted her and ran off with her rather heavy tote bag which, unsurprisingly, she gave up without a struggle.  I bet you he got a surprise when he looked inside!😀

Re: Pets and animals

Hahaha Carolyn you don't half make me laugh 😀😀

Re: Pets and animals

Hiya still here I get the option to change size of photo when I upload. I change it to small.
It's trial and error ...
Looking forward to seeing the dachshund ..love them. Theres lots to be said for small dogs ..less to pick up with the poo bags !! Both my son's have big dogs and its like shovelling up after a horse!!
Xxxx

Re: Pets and animals

Oops again, my pic seems enormous! It's practically dog sized. My sweet little dog is a mini wire haired dachshund, she is the love of my life (well except for hubby, 2 sons, 1 black Labrador and 2 horses!!) but she is little dog/BIG attitude....

Anyone who is an expert, why do some photos turn out upside down? It's a mystery... Loving all the animal photos, keep them coming xxx

Re: Pets and animals

Carolyn, there are definite benefits to owning cats!
