Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

Hi Carolyn and all

I agree, I am also intending to keep my hair short now, people have said it suits me and those who don't know, assume I had it cut this short! It certainly helps to have a trim even if it's very short, mine looks much better since last Friday's cut. I swim a lot - just back from the pool now, it's helping me get fit and trim again. Carolyn you say that one good thing that came out of having breast cancer is a new hairstyle, well I'd go further than that, I believe we have a chance of a new life, changing other things as well as our hairstyles! I'll be 60 next year and I had always said I'd never retire from work. I do like my job and meeting people but there are lots of things I want to do which I have always said I'd get round to doing "one day", well I've decided that "one day" is going to come sooner rather than later!

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

Hi

Before chemo I always admired peoples very short hair. Never had the courage to go that short though. After chemo I have kept my hair short, I love it, no hairdryers just wash and leave. One good thing came out of breastcancer a new hair style.

Love to all

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

Hi recs

My hair is really short as well about 1 cm long and I finished chemo in Feb. I have been told by several ladies during the hot weather that they like any hair and how they wish they could go that short. I hate it. but as you say manybe it does look better than I think it does. Still looks strange to me as my hair used to be mousey blonde and dead straight not even a kink in it, right now I look like an extra from Life on Mars, as its coming through very curly and black!!! I will end up look like a throw back to the 70s/80s, especially the perm looks the footballers had, I could be a 70s WAG.

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

RECS, you are guaranteed to cheer me up where the hair is concerned, thankyou!
I am SLOWLY getting used to this short short hair which sits upon my head, but i would not go as far as saying i like it yet.

Hair envy still takes over, (like today for example, as i was out shopping in Chester and i saw this woman with lovely long thick hair, and i thought how unfair it was). So i proceeded to glare at her - not good i know!

Anyway, Wilmar, imight get mine trimmed if it is meant to encourage growth, althoughi am reluctant to let scissors anywhere near it again!

Happy hairgrowing to us all.

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

so girls here's the thing - my hair is no more than 1/2 inch long after finishing chemo in March so it is very very slow - but thick enough. Yesterday I was in Zara and a lady came over to me to say how much she LOVED my hair cut and had always wanted her hair to look like that ! This is the third person to do so - honestly.

I did explain to her that it wasn't "cut" at all and she was lovely but the thing is girls - just cause your hair isn't as you would have it doesn't mean it doesn't suit you or look good to others - three total strangers have stopped me in the street now and I can assure you that never happened with my old hair !!

keep cheerful - luv R xx

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

hi all, i feel so much better reading all your comments. yes i have hair envy too-every magazine i pick up has pages on hair styles for summer its so unfair!! my hairs about 1.5 cms now it used to be long and curly like yours naz(only thing i liked about myself if i'm honest).
i went to see my hairdresser friday and she has said it needs a trim to encourage it to grow thicker (as its like babies hair-which thickens when its trimmed a few times. shes also going to put the naturtint reflex dye on for me. i'll let you know how i get on after thursday. have you seen the info by trevor sorbie on 'my new hair'.happy hair growing to you all margxxx

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

Hi Naz

Just measured my hair, its about 2.5cm long. I managed to make it look pretty good last night (had a night out)though it would have helped if I'd had some very small tongs like the hairdresser used!

PS Lovely sunny warm evening here in Plymouth, hope that means summer is back again!

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

Just wanted to say i finished chemo in Feb, hair has come back grey and curly, what a shock!
This was second time i have had chemo as it was a reoccurance and last time when my hair grew back it was straight so was expecting the same.
The grey bits got to me, so i bought an organic dye from a health shop but realised it was not permanent! so went to hairdressers and they dyed it 3 weeks ago with an organic permanent dye and it is great!!! But curly!

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

I was initially on a follicle booster and scalp treatment and a shampoo, and have now started on just the shampoo and a conditioner (based on my hairdresser's advice). They give a really fresh tingly, almost minty feeling so do feel like they are doing something.

It wasnt particulary cheap ie about £12 for 300ml shampoo and conditioner but you only need to use a really small amount so has lasted for ages.

The other treatments were about £23 for both in a promotional pack but lasted for over a month.

So not cheap but I worked on the idea that I wasnt paying for loads of haircuts or highlights so was spending elsewhere.

Might be worth checking price online though.

Hi there Alex
What form does the Nioxin come in..shampoo?
Is it expensive, as i wouldn't mind trying it if it is reasonably priced.

Some people and their comments, i don't know!

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

Hi girls

I finished chemo in March and had cold cap so kept most of my hair although it did thin out a lot (and I did have it cut short first). After the chemo it was really grey (am fair haired) but 4 months on its really starting to get colour back in it, and literally day by day its more noticeable.

My hairdresser got me onto a product called nioxin which is supposed to help promote regrowth, don't know for certain if that was what has helped but certainly didnt hurt.

And just to add for most inappropriate what not to say of the month so far from a work mate was "hasn't your hair grown back really well, shame the boob can't"!!!!!

Awww Whitey, poor you with the pink hair!
I am sure it come out okay with the organic dye.

Tina, how right you are. The hair has been without a shadow of a dout, the most challenging of all to deal with..
I still cringe when i catch sight of myself in the mirror, but have waved goodbye to the wig and scarf for good now!
Even managed to brave the headteachers leaving assembly yesterday, that was hard!

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

I used Naturtint a couple of months after chemo finished, but unfortunately went pink! I used the ash blonde one but I guess because all the dies are henna based the white and red combined for a pale pink colour rather than the blonde I was aiming for!

Am going to try an organic dye now with no peroxide but just building up courage to give it a go.

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

Hi, mine too is coming back fuzzy and grey, urgh!! Went into health food store, they have organic colours which are ok to use after a couple of months after last Chemo I have been told. I agree, out of everything that has happened since feb, the hair situation has been a big challenge. Tinaxx ps weather has been fine in sunny Wiltshire!

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

Hi everyone
My hair has started to grow back even though I still have on e FEC left. Not sure if it will stay?? But it seems to be a mixture of white and black in others words grey! Never thought Id have grey hair at 38 even if I must admit to the odd grey one before BC. Any body know what colours we can use as I dont fancy short grey hair! I havent managed my wig as I get abit panicky with getting too hot! I really was shocked how much the Hair thing affects us!!
Happy growing to you all

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

Hi there again
Dae, how much hair do you have? I was thinking that mine is too short to do anything with, (it's about 3 cm long i guess), so pretty short!
So glad you had a good experience at the hair dressers, that must have made you feel good!

Bboonie, totally agree with you about the hair adverts, i HATE THEM with a passion ...grrhhhhh.....
Then at the farm i took my son to earlier today, there were loads of women all with lovely hair, and then there was me....
Hope you feel better soon, London to Cumbria is a drive and a half..how about getting the train?
How are you now?
The weather in the NW is rubbish i have tod say..my parents are in Buckinghamshire and have had no rain!

Oh well..happy hair growing to us all..

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

Hi NAZ

My daughter lives in the NWin Cumbria and she has been moaning about the rain, as I live in London I haven't been able to see her much since dx as I am so bl**dy tired all the time and would not be able to do the drive.

I finished chemo in Feb and hair starting to grow back but it is so short, about 1 cm long at the back which is the longest bit. I too have hair envy, I hate the hair adverts especially the you are worth it adverts.

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

Hi all

My hair is taking ages to grow, is very fine (like baby hair), crinkly and straggly - or was till yesterday. On a whim I popped into a local hairdressers (never used it before) even though I thought my hair was too short to do anything with. The hairdresser sat me down, gave me a glass of wine and proceeded to wash, condition, cut AND style my hair! It felt great after not having it for a year and when I looked in the mirror when she'd finished I felt great and feminine again! It actually looked longer and fuller even though she had trimmed it.

Only problem is, now I know what it can look like, I will have to start making an effort, instaed of just thinking there was no point as it was too short!

So my advice is - go to the hairdresser! Colour is pretty boring but it's not grey as I expected.

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

Oh god, I've just been looking and I don't know what to get. There are so many and I have no idea where to start. I can't believe I'm looking and I can't believe I'm going to be wearing a scarf and I can't believe I'm going to be bald! And what about when you go to bed, do you get a cold head in the night - that is so sad it makes me want to cry.

Maybe I need to wait for a bit.

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

Wow, thanks everyone - lots to go on here. I will start looking tomorrow. I also think I'm going to go and get my hair cut shorter so that it isn't such a shock to me, and to other people!

I've never really been into hair either, but suddenly I've decided I really like my hair and I don't want to lose it. Sad isn't it! The things we always took for granted.

Thank you for all your advice. I'm sure I'll be on here ranting soon Naz, especially because its raining again. Why do we live in the NW?!!!

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

Ebay seller abyan7 based in Indonesia does really nice 'different' head coverings - I saved some hair due to the cold cap, but had quite a few 'I can't be bothered' days when I wore a variety of these and always got really favourable comments. She's widened her range since I used her last year - the type I had were like current (20 Jul 10) item 390219233366. I thoroughly recommend her!!

I also used Bonnytoun Hats (Sandra Rook has been thru chemo and hair loss and sends fabric swatches and sample hat styles) and Luscious Lids (I like dthe colours but the turbans were 'OK' and didn't get much use).

Good luck!!

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

I had it cut to about 1" all over before chemo as advised for the cold cap - and a couple weeks ago I cut the hair that survived chemo to be the same length as the new growth - having it two different lengths was really annoying me. Now it's all about 1.5 inches long - it looks short, but like it was meant to be cut short if you know what I mean - not like it was shaved and growing out. Plus it has come back as thick as it was before, and now I am back to using proper shampoo and conditioner, it looks in good condition too - far better than I anticipated at the start of chemo.

I hope you get used to your new look soon. I think I found it easier to adapt because I didn't put any effort into my hair before, and if anything it looks better now than it did when it was longer! I'm probably a lot older than you too!

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

Glad you like your new look Finty...that is great!

I guess i wil get used to mine eventually, especially when it gets bit longer..better than being bald that is for sure!

How much hair do you have, if you don't mind me asking?

finty

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

Hi Naz - yes I did it myself, and it's been fine. It seems quite gentle on the hair. I still had quite a lot of hair from using the cold cap, and the new growth from where it had thinned seemed quite strong. I guess I didn't even notice the downy phase.

I actually quite like having really short hair - I've never been much into my hair anyway - this way I can do even less! Also I've always liked the spiky hair and glasses look - and now thanks to chemo I have the glasses as well!

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

Hi guys
Glad it isn't just me who is fed up of the hair and has hair envy!
I can't even watch the haoir adverts, or even look at anyone who has remotely decent looking hair, i am so envious...

The people i have seen since i dared to bare my head have said that the short look suits me, but i disagree - it is hideous!

I think i might ask my hairdresser aobut hair extensions later on, although i do not want to put any stress on my already delicate hair.

Defo agree about the 'yummy mummy' comments - doesn't make me feel any better...and Kylie ..well i know she has gone through it all, and she does look nice, but i am so envious of her hair...

Finty , did you dye your hair yourself? Is it okay? I also finsished chemo in April and would love to have a dye on to cover the grey bits, but too scared at the mo.

Raining AGAIN in the NW, now i have SE envy too!

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

Whitey - I have never had hair extensions, so can't speak from experience - but I would have thought as the new hair is still very fragile that the extensions would be likely to pull it out or break it off. Maybe someone has tried this and can offer some advice.

Tina -I finished chemo in April and dyed my hair last week with a vegetable dye (naturetint). It's fine - not as nice a colour as the ones I used to use, but way better than the grey! I still lose more hair than I used to pre BC every time I wash it - but I don't think that has got any worse since I dyed it.

Hi Bunny,
I bought my scarves from theindiashop.com they were great and reasonably priced at 12 pounds for 3 scarves and 3 co-ordinating silk accent scarves.

Sally Anne,
I also bought lots of big earrings and spent more time than usual doing my makeup.

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

Hi all,
I have just had my long hair cut to a short bob to get me and everyone else used to me having shorter hair if it falls out in chemo. I actually prefer my hair shorter but never dared to do it earlier- wish I had. As I have quite a fat oval face- am not looking forward to going bald as the pixie style will not do, but am hoping to learn some tricks with scarves and oversized earrings as personally I don't think I could stand a wig on my head. I am hoping to go for a gypsy fortune teller look 😉
Please don't feel bad for ranting on here- that's what it's for isn't it??
Love and hugs

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

I have been bald since February, and it is finally growing back following my last chemo on 3 Jun. Of course everything else seems to be growing back faster than the hair on my head!! I need to shave my legs and underarms already (even though I can't manage it because I just had reconstructive surgery) and even had to pluck a hair under my chin! But I am still losing the last of my eyelashes and eye brows. It just doesn't seem fair!
However, I haven't minded being bald too much and got lots of compliments on my scarves and wig. my wig is synthetic and I got it using my NHS prescription. I think it looks incredibly realistic and people often seem surprised when I point out it is a wig, initially even telling e what a great haircut I had had. I don't wear it much now though as it is rather hot. Once I have enough hair I shall take the wig to the hairdresser and have my own hair cut and coloured just like it!

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

I miss my hair every day! Even though I have been bald since May, each time I catch sight of myself in a mirror I do a double take - I look like a franciscan monk!
Tomorrow I am off to buy wig number 6... I live in hope...hoping for something that doesnt feel like a helmet with a big neon sign that screams WIG.
Hot, hot, hot in the South East - so wig stays off and I stay home.

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

Will get colour in my hair as soon as possible, been told to wait six months and use organic colour afterwards. Can't wait. Had my hair cut to no.2 after first fec used cc and hope long term it will help with regrowth. I bought a wig from Hairware, they have a lot of choice and went blonde for a change. Also got used to wearing buffs and hats, always made sure I had my make up done. Bunny1, I couldn't imagine either what I would look like before the hair went and when it did, it was the first time I cried after my dx. But it's a journey and we all come out the other end and if the hair is the sacrifice for killing the cancer cells than so be it. My personal take on it. My I still have "hair envy" and hate watching the ads on the telly,.....! Good Luck and big hug! Tina

Oh, bless you Tina. I don't get that either -why grey? Does it stay grey or does the natural colour come back again? I think the eye lash and eye brown thing is scary too - I can't imagine what I'm going to look like! Suppose we'll find out soon enough!

How irritating are the yummy mummy comments!

Re: RANT ALERT - HATE MY HAIR!

Had last chemo 10 days ago. My head is a mess, tuffs of grey (why grey I was brown before?) over bald head, bits of fuzz on the side and I miss my long lovely hair so much. I reckon it's going to take years to grow it back to its original state. Taking supplements, pro amino & vitamin B complex, magnesium and silica.
But it's depressing. Not having eyelashes or eyebrows does not help. Urgh!
And if one more yummy mummy on the school run tells me not to worry it will grow back soon, I am going to scream or burst into tears......

Why does everyone say how amazing her hair is? I've noticed that recently too. Obviously, she is very lucky. I still have mine but I am due to start chemo soon as well and am wondering whether to just go and get it all chopped off in preparation. I've always had long hair so wonder what it will look like being so short, or totally non existant?!
