Radio Ablation of Liver

Have just had sacn results and liver mets have increased by 4. The are very small, measured in milimeters. I am considering ablation and wondered if anyone has any experiences they want to share. Don’t want to start chemo for a while ,my body needs a break.

Hi Mills
my onc will allow it done under 5 I didnt qualify as too many in mine, I am still on chemo break, off to Spain for 10 days next week.
When did you come off capecitabine? Ian and I went to Plymouth Question time with NICE they are a very strange bunch and like any bunch there was definitely a few rotten ones!

Hi Mills,
Last time I saw my onc he suggested that it was time to look at this. Unfortunately I’d been having a lot of backache so we had to rule that out first, and thankfully MRI scan has just showed NED, so i should be referred soon for RFA. Somewhere in London but I can’t remember where!
I’ll keep you posted, but if anyone else has experience, please share…

Hi there…I know (and have met) a couple of the forum users who have had RFA…I wondered if you might be able to find some of their old posts through the search facility, button, here?
Some of the posts were quite old though. Also a Dr Satya Bhattachary did a friend’s RFA at the Royal London Hospital…x

yes I had my done at the chelsea and westminster by a mr mccole last year I am under the care of the royal marsden, criteria is under 5- under 4cm but mainly they have to be situated in the correct place. What would u like to no?

hekko everyone. Thank you for your comments. Debs I came off capercitibine 3 weeks ago as it had stopped working, thats when we founf the news mets. I have five now, the last 4 are measured in millimeters so hopefully I meet the criteria. I have been referrd to a liver specialist at the RVI Newcastle. Hopefully it will be a successful meeting. Has anyone with liver mets had any symptoms?? I don’t, its only when my tumour markers go up that I have scans and the ba****ds are found. I have more [ain and discomfort from the Zometa side effects.
Thank you all for your comments, I will keep you posted. We are off to Spain tomorrow for a week, we really need th break, this rollercoaster gets too much at times

Hi Mills
we are off to Spain in the morning as well, what a coincidence! It is taking an age to do the jobs that used to take no time at all.
Have a good time and see you in cyberland on our return.

I have found a liver surgeon in Newcastle who is carrying out this procedure. My ONC has referred me to him. Hopefully the appointment will be soon. Will let you know what he says
Mills

ok - I am looking at that and my onc says he will think about it when I have finished this cycle of Docetaxel

let us know hox you get on

What’s the general feeling on this from oncologists? Mine says he prefers to keep going with systemic treatments while they are working and don’t effect the quality of life as they get the little bastards that the scans fail to pick up as well as the ones you can see.
My liver met is 17 mm so well within the limits. I wonder if I should be pushing for RFA?

My own personal feeling on RFA is that I would hold fire if you still have other options to use or things are stable, I had a year of remission from it then my liver tumor came back with avengence, it was 12mm a year later the whole of my liver was/is (?? waiting for scan & results) covered, a couple of other people I speak to within support groups later on down the line the same thing has happened, really time will tell what the out come of RFA will achieve, I was one of the first lot of people to have it done from BC, I know results from bowel cancer are good, I’m having my doubts about BC though. My own personal HONEST thoughts. Who can really tell if it was just time for a flare up for me.

My onc has always said there’s been very few research studies done and those that have are too small to take note of. There seems no real conclusive evidence either way, but just a number of individual stories where people have seen good results. He used to say it was entirely up to me, and he would support my decision. More recently i get the feeling he thinks it would be a good idea to try…
will keep you posted

My ONC was sceptical at first but he has spoken to the surgeon who performes ablation and he says he is getting good results. The more he does the better the reserach will be. My cancer is not stable, which is why I am considering it and I willl be having more chemo, probably Vineralbine. Still waiting for appointment. Will keep you updated
