Reconstruction wound opened

I had a masetcomy 10 or so weeks ago and have been plagued by infections. 2 chemo cycles under my belt - last one 9 days ago. On Wednesday saw the surgeon who said the wound had just about closed, Friday it looked all soggy so saw the nurse who thought she could see the implant! re-dressed it and booked to see her Tuesday, Today the dressing looked wet so I took it off, only to be faced with a 10p piece sized hole though which I can see white so assume it's the implant or mesh I can see. Surgeon has put me on antibiotics but really scared its just going to open up and will have to have the implant removed.

Anyone had problems with wounds/implants etc? Very stressed.

Hi riversidedawn,

I had radiotherapy in 2002 after lumpectomy x 2 then in 2013 it was back in the same place as dcis and had to have mx but dident want to be flat so went for immediate recon . had ld flap but surgeon said that i wouldent be able to have implant as i had previouse radio to that breast as the result would not be good  so i have just the muscle from my back which isent enough so im having fat liporemodeling done .waiting to have second filling done soon i hope then uplift to other breast + nipple +tattoo . i will get there in the end . cant believe 14 yrs and im having to do it all again but no nodes involved so that was a relieif  hope everything goes well for you . linda

Well it didn't close up and I had the implant removed a week ago. FEC 3 should have been today but put off to 2nd jan to give the wound time to heal. My lively pert boob has turned into a lump if wrinkly meat!

Surgeon us happy with it though. Stitches should come out next week. We discussed options for reconstruction after chemo, could have expander 8 weeks after chemo and final implant after radio if onc will let it be put off that long. Otherwise it's reconstruction after radio which I read isn't a good option... Any stories to share on that? X

Natalka007, that sounds like mine, my op was about 10 weeks ago. Problem is I'm also going through chemo which doesn't help the healing. Fingers crossed for the coming week.

Thank you for your replies ladies. I saw my surgeon today and she said if it isn't closing up within a week then she'll have to take the implant out and either put a smaller one in so she can close the wound, or put an expander in. I have my third chemo due on Friday 19th so we haved 10 days or so to see what happens. I'm seeing the surgeon again on Friday and Monday along with the oncologist.

Are you going through chemo as well? I don't know how that fits with having another operation but they can't leave a big hole in me until March!

I had to get my implant taken out after two weeks as a centimetre of skin wasn't healing, they replaced it with expander 3 weeks ago, now I am paranoid this won't work either, I have bad nerve ending pain from an auxillary clearance , I'm now at 5 weeks post opp

Hi Riversidedawn,

10 weeks after masectomy I also found a 3-4 cm hole. My surgeon put me on antibiotics, but 2 weeks later my implat had to be removed ... hole was not healing. I also could see a mesh (blue colored mesh). Every case is different, so in your case It could still heal !!!! I do have a pic. how it looked , if you would like I can email it to you, so you can compare

Sounds like you are on it with the honey therapy.  My GP needed a bit of persuasion.  Following my first surgery i developed a severe reaction to the dressings (whole area blistered) so GP did prescribe clear view / opsite dressings but was reluctant.

As far as I am aware, they went in via scar tissue,to eliminate any new scarring. The op itself, was no longer than an hour.Went into theatres about 8.45 then back on ward about 11.00.It was a funny old time,as happened all over the Christmas period as well
For a time I had prostheses and was actually OK.....as you look find with clothes on.....;).....take care.x
PS to butterfly 318...I was a nurse, community one at that.Did my own dressings, mostly, then when I felt really down went to see the PN....I had huge job obtaining dressings, till I realised I could get them on FP10s....what joy it was to have handful of gauze swabs, wound pads and micro pore....;)

Morning Riversidedawn

i guess one of the difficulties is that you are already on the Chemo Course which won'tt help the healing process.  Over the last two years i have had 5 surgeries.  Mastopexy , mastectomy etc etc August this year i had expander exchange to right mastectomy site and left side reduction / lift,  Amazingly the right side seems to have healed well each time but the left side where i had lift and reduction would not heal at the T Junction.......  2 lots of antibiotics ... lots of dressings.......5 weeks in all.   My Son is a Renal Transplant Nurse Specialist and they use Medi Honey on wounds of immuno compromised patients when wounds are not healing.  My GP agreed to prescribe this for me in 25g tubes.  Your apply, dress the wound and come back in three days,  The hole then was like a cream coloured soft tissue but when i bathed it gently the edges had started to close,  i used the treatment twice, total 6 days and it was completely healed.

It was difficult for me as a Nurse cos i'm a messer....like to looking at it each day etc.... but was able to leave it and the end result was good.....Just a drug free option worth looking at.  I am sure your hospital will have access to it, maybe you could ask for a referral to tissue viability nurses.

JillyBee, I just feel so miserable. My head is saying the implant will have to come out - I've thought that for a few weeks so I guess anything else will be a bonus. How did they take your implants out? was it through the same wound or a new one? Luckily (or not) I don't have any tummy to take for reconstruction so don't know what they can do to rectify it.

My surgeon is always in London when this happens - so far 3 infections, always on Sunday and she's always away. I do have her mobile number but would rather see her than the on call doctor. I just imagine the hole getting bigger and bigger by the day.

Sounds familiar.I didn't have chemo, but had infections both sides, following bi lateral mx....long story short, implants were removed,a relief in a way, then opted for DIEP.It is a rubbish time, feeling for you.I,at one point, saw my expander implant.Always happened at weekend as well......you will get there though.Gentle hugs.
