Afternoon sparklers

I'm still doing ok. Woke up with thrush this morning so rang hospital to check it was ok to take a tablet for it. Hopefully it will sort it out before it takes hold. I usually get it when I'm run down so not unexpected, justy a bit of a nuisance. If thats all I can complain about I'm cant be doing too badly.
Welcome to Rockydog, sorry you had to join us but we can all support each other

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Good afternoon sparklers,
Day 10 after chemo the nurse came and took a blood tests this morning, my ulcers are much better today, I washed my hair this morning, all ok until I was drying my hair and it came out in clumps, I have thick hair so not such an issue yet, but it was a bit of a shock, emotionally I just wanted to cry but I feel much better now hugs from friends at lunchtime, I guess it is time to have a look at wigs.

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Mummybear - so sorry about the ulsers. I'm prone to them anyway so am pretty worried about this SE
and I really feel for you as, for such little things, they can be so sore! Which gel are you using? My lips have started peeling but I thiink that was because I've been sick so much (bile burns!!) and have been using an E45 lip balm which is helping. Hope your mouth improves.

CK1 - hope you're ok. I'm only 6 days after fec and I can see my hair is getting brittle. I have a habit of fiddling with it anyway and have noticed it breaking off more. Much more of it in bottom of shower this morning too 😞 I think the hairloss thing is going to be a really emotionaly-charged one for us all to get our heads around (excuse the pun!) and I know everybody out there who have gone through this before us tells us ut grows back (and thanks for top hair tips Tatania - any other advice from your prifessional sourse most welcome! - and its a small price to pay to get better, etc and I know all that's true but I'm sure I'm going to be sad when mine's gone and that's only human isnt it? I've always had really good thick long hair and I haven't had it cut either as my wig's very similar to my own. I'm quite worried that I'm not preparing myself well enough for it coming out but Im not sure how best to do it. I'm being a wuss I know. Anyway, hope your head pain eases off. This bc lark really pees me off sometimes to see what it's doing to all you lovely people makes me so mad!

Pascal and Jenny - glad you're getting through it all. The taste thing is starting to kick in with me too. I'm a total chocoholic and coffee girl and haven't fancied choc at all and my coffee now tastes weird. I'm drinking loads of milk which is odd for me.

shazza - I know what you mean about your legs. I've read in a few places that its the last to go from there. Typical isn't it!!

Anyway, you'll see from the time that I'm still struggling to sleep. If I ws feeling more cheerful, I'd get up and di us all another ditty but I fear it might be too miserable. Mind you 'onc' and 'bonk' has given me an idea .

Hope you're all sleeping well sparklers.

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Hi,
I guess I must be a sparkler too.
This is all new to me. I was diagnosed on Friday 2nd November and started chemo on Nov 6th. I've been told 5 months of chemo then surgery then radiotherapy if all goes to plan. Feeling very strange about everything imaginable so far and my head is only just catching up with what is going on but I thought it would be a good idea to join this forum and talk with people going through the same thing.
Coped well with my first chemo. Very very tired and low level nausea but the steroids did there job despite sending me a bit hyper. Then the low that followed was quite difficult. But into week 3 now so feel much better and am hoping to have a good week before it all starts again on the 27th.
One thing is my skin on my face felt very strange... very sensitive and almost painful to touch as if I was going to have a huge outbreak of acne but no acne appeared and this does seem to have settled down.
Anyway feeling quite anxious, nervous and that the world is quite a surreal place at the moment but am hoping support from here will help to sort me out a little so thank you in anticipation......

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Hi sparklers!
Oh the irony. Had a long soak in the bath tonight and after spending so much of the last few weeks worrying about hairloss, promptly started to shave legs and generally defuzz. Why am I bothering?

Sorry to here your head is hurting CK1, my heads a bit itchy but thats probably cos I'm washing my hair less at the moment.
Happy birthday Lucypenny, glad you enjoyed your day
Jenny12m, I've got a bit of a funny mouth too. Not sore yet and no major problems with taste but can only describe it as a bit 'thick'. Been brushing my teeth more which helps for as short time
Apart from the funny mouth [and the lunacy of shaving] I'm still doing ok. Took last of steroids today so see what tomorrow brings.

Keep strong and carry on sparkling!

Happy Birthday, LucyPenney! Glad you have had a good day. xx
CK1 - we are with you and remember, not long until it comes back - and thicker and lusher I am told! (I have been recommended Silica Hair tablets for this too, by a professional source - avail from Holland & Barrett but hey, where do you stop?!)
Mummybear - I hope today and the mouthwash has worked well so you're now all soooothed.
Sweet dreams and love to you all, sparklers!xx

Hello Sparklers, sorry that I have been away for a while. First FEC on Thursday last week and feeling Ok having taken all the anti sickness meds and the steriods. Tomorrow I start the immune boosting injections which I am going to ask a nurse friend to administer as I am too chicken. Feel like I am rattling with so many tablets though.
Col 123 - loved your poem.
Lucypenny - glad you had a good birthday. I managed a couple of glasses of wine today, although I have no taste buds left.
My funny tasting mouth is my worse se so far and I am on day 3. Wake during the night and feel quesy so have some dry biscuits by my bed.
Got my NHS wig yesterday but need a hat or scarf for in the house.
Keep smiling everyone!

Glad to see you are coping OK Pascal 48 xxx

So good to read so many positive comments. I have been pretty tired most of the weekend but nothing like I was expecting. My mouth has been quite dry aswell but that's probably quite good because it makes me drink more which is supposed to be good.

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Dear Fellow Sparklers,
I hope you are feeling well today.
I had my first chemo on Friday and all went pretty smoothly (had a little cry as it went in but I think that's it for now - loving Pestering Pixie'a analogy that it's a magical liquid mopping up nasties - thank you for your encouragement and advice there!) Cold cap numbed after about 10 mins and all went pretty much without hitch. I left feeling a bit 'fizzy'.
Started to feel like my head was heavy and a dimmer switch was switching me off so went to bed at 8.30pm. I was buzzing - literally, with tinnitus in my ears from 1am - and didn't sleep again until 2pm! I had the most amazing energy and took my son on a two hour round drive to Brighton via Gatwick at 5am followed by cleaning the kitchen as never before! I had a sleep and then went off - still on the steroid buzz last night to collect my friend from the airport again. A semi-normal night's sleep has followed.
Yvonne62 - water is the key! I drunk at least a two litre bottle the day before chemo, again the same on the day and again the same yesterday. I have had very slight nausea but only sporadically but do keep on the tabs they give. I know tomorrow when the steroids stop, I am due to come down again - but for now, I'm rather enjoying this tiny part of the ride - and a cleaner house!
Lots of love to you all, Sparklers and I hope you have a sweet Sunday.

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Col123 love the rhyme! Keep them coming:-)

i have had another good day with no side effects, I am on day 10 and its my 3rd day free from side effects- wondering what delights are round the corner next, i am scared to go back to how i was the first 6 days.
i have my wig sorted and my hair cut to my chin and was planning on going shorter before it falls out but i keep thinking maybe it won't fall out- even though I know it will. Since feeling alive the last 3 days I seem to have gone into denial about everything... Hope this doesn't bite me on the bum! Mind you my father is the most in denial man on this topic right now, but it's obviously just how he copes.. He told me he feels like I was explaining everyday And laughing ?!!!! (Family!)

hope everyone having a nice weekend, staying strong and sparkling. speaking of sparkling, anyone had any alcohol since treatment? I'm a bit nervous to try but champers is my fav:-)

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Evening sparklers! I couldn't sleep last night - think its the high dose of steroids they've still got me on for being so sick - so in a very weird way I got up and penned us a little ditty! God knows why but it came into my head so I wrote it down. Me and my little lad are always making up daft rhymes and this is daft so apologies in advance if it offends anyone ). Hopefully, it'll make you smile!

Sparklers, sparklers all burning so bright,
Hanging on in there even when we feel shi*e,
Chatting, supporting and helping each other through,
The good days, the weird days and those when we feel blue.

I've counted 40 names now on our marvellous thread,
But I might have miscounted because I've got a fuzzy head!
I'm waffling on now so will bid you adieu,
And go in search of lactulose and a visit to the loo.

So hang on in there everyone and we'll get through, you'll see,
Because we are the sparklers with the bright red wee!

Have a good evening all. Love, Col xxxx

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Hi CK1

I've booked into Holistic Centre for aromatherapy. I've a friend that does reflexology so may rope her in too. I've had it done before and it does help. So far I've not had much of a problem in that direction. Been to the loo for the last two days with no obvious stomach/digestive problems so not overly worried yet. I'm sure you really needed to know that! Thanks for thinking of me though

I took my mam out shopping this afternoon [sure its supposed to be the other way round when you are getting treated for cancer but hey ho I was well enough lol]. Only problem was I spent more than she did and I didn't want anything. Thats a serious side effect of chemo!

Just going to chill tonight and watch a film I think. I might write my christmas cards though. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Keep strong and carry on sparkling

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Hi sparklers,
Day 11 after my first FEC, have been just fine since first evening, which is a surprise to me as imagined it would be awful. I never imagined long walks, long coffees and being able to get on with all the things at home I've never had time (OK, inclination) to do before.
My scalp starting to be itchy, collected wig and scarves on friday, so am ready! Also ordered a sleeping cap and indoor hat, for wearing indoors as our house is quite cool and I've too many lines to look anything other than frightening with no hair - I still remember the shock of seeing my old mum bald, not something I want to inflict on too many people! My main SE is runny eyes and nose, getting through dozens of tissues, may resort to wearing ski glasses when dog walking. Has anyone any good hints re eyes or noses?
I expect SEs to increase, but still feeling much more positive now the journey has started than I did when I was waiting for surgery and then waiting for chemo. Good luck to all fellow sparklers, we've not timed it well with Christmas approaching, but most of us willl be half way through by then!

Morning Shazza,
Hopefully you will be OK after missing your tablets. Was thinking of you last night, I read that reflexology might be of benefit for those with Crohns, have you had that. I'm thinking of booking a session in (I haven't got Crohns but do have problems with my bowels!). I had it done a few years ago and found it really relaxing.
Have a great weekend Keep Sparkling. Big hugs CK xxx

I'm on Day 17 and still no hair loss although my scalp has been uber sensitive for a week. Anyone else experiencing this? Tempted to get OH to clipper it to relieve the symptons. Had it cut really short last week but I don't think it was enough!

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Well hello sparkly ladies!

Hopping over from the April thread to wish you lots of luck and loveas you start the chemo journey. It's a road full of pot-holes but it is navigable, even though we do sometimes hit the reverse gear.

For me, the best thing I did was to get fully involved with my April chemo thread. I t wa such a help and support to have others who were going through the same things. Our thread, i know i am bias, is probably the liveliest and funniest on the forums. Yes, funny. We ended up sharing so much else other than cancer, and we have cried but more than anything laughed our way through.

Laughter is the medicine of the soul, and a good daily doese is the best tonic for chemo.

We have all now finished chemo and rads and in October we all met up for our Bunnyfeste in Birmingham. It was the most wonderful joyous occasion. This will be you, 8 or 9 months from now.

When I started this journey, I knew it was going to be a tough 9 months. So I said to myself, girl, you have been pregnant 3 times, just think of it as another pregnancy and the new life at the end of it is mine.

Just a couple of bits of advice:

1) Don't suffer in silence. Think of chemo 1 as a trial, the one where you learn how to manage your s/e's. If your are sick, insist on Emend for subsequent chemos, it is miraculous.

2). Do not rush to buy wigs. Wait till your hair starts to fall around day 15 of chemo 1. I rushed out and bought 3 very expensive wigs before chemo. Only ever wore one of them and didn't wear that much. Was much happier with gorgeous scarves. Most ladies are, chemo make you hot and wigs make you hotter.

3) Do NOT google. You can frighten yourself to death. Just use 3 sites for info. This one, Cancer Research and MacMillan

Sticke to each other like glue. Think of chemo as sparkly magic liquid mopping up the gunk. This time will go quickly... Promise.

Much love

Pixie xx

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Bad appointment today. If I have the 'c' drug my kidneys will fail (I have reduced function which I was born with and was stable but low). I now have to wait to speak to my oncologist about what it means if I don't have the 'c' drug And if there are other options for me. Kidney failure I am told might be be better option. This is a devastating hit to me and my family. I haven't had any conversations with my onc about alternative treatment or if it even exisits. Not the birthday weekend I was hoping for. On the positive side I am side effect free today.

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Hi Sparklers,
Just thought I would post an update. Felt fine all day. Did some washing and pottered around at home till lunch time. Mate came round and we went for a walk and a coffee in a local park. Not quite Zumba but good for me! Was nice to get a bit of fresh air and felt more confident having someone with me as I seem to have spent the last couple of days waiting for 'something' to happen. I'm eating ok and don't have any problem with taste which is a bit of a shame as I could do with losing a bit of weight Maybe next cycle.

Pascal48 I did the whole water bit too and think it worked as red went straight through. Going to the loo a lot is a small price to pay.

Jellymould, hope it is just a rash due to weather, we have enough going on without unwanted 'extras'

Col123, funny how its the simple things that mean the most isn't it. I really enjoyed my shower this morning lol Glad you aren't feeling sick too

Ladyofsurrey, sorry to hear you were so sick, hope you are feeling better now

Jellytot83, thanks for your blog, I managed to read it before my chemo so was well prepared for the red urine, would have panicked without it as I've had problems before.

Good afternoon Sparklers,
Well i had my 1 st chemo yesterday and have survived the night !!!!
I was very sick from 7pm to 1pm but there was nothing left in my poor stomach to come up anymore
