Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Hi all have not posted for while, anybody had these side effects, gripping headache pulsating pain at end of spinand back of neck. Saw doc today and said no infection and to take paracetemol this is the worst I have felt help it passes as have stacks to do.

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Well done Jellymould!! Love it. You look quite punk(ish) and cool....along the old Sinead O Connor look!! If I look half as good I'll be happy. MrsR2B - great news on the tumour shrinking; that should give you a boost before Christmas (god knows we all need it!). x

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Great piccie Jellymould!
My hair's like that now just have to get used to it! Have tingling in fingertips, they're kind of numb in places. Also arm has started really hurting this week where the chemo went in from the hand to the elbow area, assume another SE.
Big hugs to all xxx

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Afternoon Sparklers,
Glad you are having a good day MrsR2B, we have to make the most of them. I've been out for a coffee and a bit of retail therapy this morning so it seems I'm having a good day too. Hadf a bit of sunshine today which has helped.
Jellymould, love the photo! I chickened out of the shaved head but have had it cut even shorter now. Couldn't do much with it anymore and wanted to stop using hairdryer and straighteners. Next step will be the razor, just hope I look as good as you and am brave enough to post it on here [not sure about the last bit lol]
Hope everyone else is having as good a day as possible, keep strong and carry on sparkling!

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

hi all, having a good day today. feel good. i am really feeling christmassy now, cant wait to finish my christmas shopping so i can relax. hugs xx

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Hi all, hope everyone is doing ok.
Had my first ultra sound since starting chemo and had some very positive news that my tumour is shrinking in size and also breaking doninth density.
I'm feeling so much more positive as the one told me on 28th nov that he didn't think it bass shrunk and they may need to change my chemo drugs.
Hair still hanging on in and to an unknowing eye you would never know it has thinned vastly, hair constantly shedding but I think I'm lucky as I khaki always had ridiculously thick hair.

Today has been a good day for me. Sending you all love xx

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Hi Shazza - love the Red Sea imagery going on with your head. So that's what ahead of the rest of us....total mad looking people (so what's new I say!). Mags - I'm only 4 days behind you with chemo, and my head also already hurts and is a bit itchy so perhaps I am going to start losing it soon. I have no idea who to go to when it does start to come out, but at this stage my feeling is that I want to get the hard bit out of the way; so I am thinking of not doing the cold cap any more and just going to get it all completely shaved off as soon as it starts coming out. I have an appointment next Wed with a wig place. I am now desperately hoping that my own hair will last long enough until I have the wig and manage to get it shaped if necessary. It is hard with kids, as my 13 year old didn't take too well to my shorter look either, so I can only imagine what he will think if he comes home and finds me bald. Mind you he did offer me £5 if I agreed to go for a blue Afro wig, and when I declined he just said "but mum it's 5 pounds!!" (how innocent). At least they make you keep smiling. X

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Hi Sparklers
Been for 2nd cycle today. Only took 3 attempts to get cannula in so getting better!
Feel ok so far but not eaten anything yet. Was very cold and icy today so was wrapped up well today, plenty of layers and 2 pair of socks. Even wore a hat due to thinning hair!
Sorry to hear you have been so poorly CK, hope you are soon feeling better x
Supersusan, mine started coming out about 2 weeks after first session. I've still got a good covering but can't do anything with it. Thinking of getting it cut/shaved later today. Not had any real pain with it but did wake up last night with a weird feeling on my head and pillow was covered in hair this morning for first time. I asked the Onc about effects building up as cycles progress and she told me that if I tolerated the first one well the rest will be very similar. The main increase is in tiredness and fatigue apparently [and presumably picking up bugs etc]. My next cycle is 27th December so I'm going to enjoy Xmas and hibernate at new year! At least I will be half way through by then x
Mags, glad you seem to be doing ok and getting out and about x
Col123, I've got the Red Sea parting too and its starting to bother me. Rest of it is stuck up all over the place. I look like a mad woman, feel like it sometimes too lol Seeing my niece the hairdresser this afty so will get it really cropped or maybe a number 4. I expect to feel emotional once its done and will probably have a good cry, but as I keep getting told it will grow back [bet I hate it when it does too, probably be grey and tight curls so it looks like an old fashioned granny perm!] Hope you feel better about it soon. And I certainly wasn;t snazzy this morning with all my layers, felt like a trussed up turkey! x
Stellanbraska, I'm hitting the water as we speak, started yesterday and will make a big effort over next few days too. Sorry its got you but hope you feel better soon x
Deeh, I've not had any incontinence problems as such but there have been a few times when I've only made it by the skin of my teeth, for both bits. With all the water, etc I'm drinking today I'm keeping within arms reach of the loo! Might be worth mentioning to the nurse, just to be on the safe side in case its the start of an infection. I'm also trying to look on the bright side of all these side effects, saving money on shampoo, conditioner, razors, etc. Take care x
Glad you are feeling better Jellymould, can't believe how cold it is today. Thank god I have a good excuse to snuggle up on the settee and watch xmas films with the xmas lights on x

Hope everyone else is feeling as well as can be expected x

Keep strong and carry on sparkling!

Shazza xx

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Hi Jayne / Deeh / CK - Many thanks for your replies. At least it gives me something to work with.
I hate the idea of losing quality time over Christmas due to not feeling well, because normally everybody is so busy and Christmas is the one time of year that kids and adults slow down and enjoy each others company. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will be able to get over the next chemo quickly and will be in a position to enjoy Christmas. The same goes for all of you other Sparklers!
At least with New Year, I am going to celebrate the end of a tough year and (in spite of having to go through 4 more chemo sessions) look forward with optimism to next year as marking the "beginning of the rest of my life".
Keep smiling and fighting!

morning sparklers, feel much better today, apart from a headache which is fine. sitting here in my hat and cardi over my pj's, my its cold outside. hope everyone is doing ok today and the se are at there lowest. hugs allxx

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

hi sparklers
been up since 6.00 am, woke with headache again.
embarrasing question time!!!!!!! has anyone suffered incontinence or heard of anyone who has while having chemo?? i woke at 6.00 with wet pj bottoms, was so shocked and upset. do you think i should report it to chemo nurses or wait see if it happens again?
col - i was goin to get my head shaved yesterday but son couldnt make it with clippers. ive got strands all over - OH calls it a bobby charlton comb over . sometimes feel like im the only person who doesnt have a problem with losing my hair - i look on the bright side, one less thing to worry about each day, shower, head washed and dried - sorted, just put hat, scarf, wig or whatever on. wish the hairs on my legs would hurry up and disappear, keep putting off shaving them in the hope they will drop out - had body scrub and scrunchie on them and they are still there - every day i try pulling them out but they are in for the long haul i think
Anyway fellow sparklers i know we are all different, and i understand it can be traumatic and upsetting for some of you, but hope my take on it puts a little smile on your faces xxx
hoping you all have a good day today and hoping you all feel better
love and hugs dee xxxx,

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Hi Sparklers
Well Im currently on the steroid bounce so thought I,d check in !! I,m not feeling to hot either to be honest I,m suffering from the Bladder side effect and it hurts big time lots of water and paracitamol !!!
Mags2710 I had a really good conversation with a guy fixing the paxman machine in the chemo ward on Tuesday he knew more about it than the nurses !! Basically he told me have the nurses dont really know how to use it proberly as they only really send one nurse to the training and then they show the others so its a bit like chinese whispers.Anyway he said dont put to much conditioner in your hair and dont rub it into the skull because it blocks the hair follickles which makes the hair go patchy. He also said after the 30 minutes before they give you the chemo you should remove the cap briefly to check its cold all over then retighten the cap because otherwise your head will shrink and the cap will not have the prober contact with the top of the head which is why many women get the friar tuck look !!! He said insist the nurses do this most of them dont because their to busy his advise was show your chemo partner how to do it and get them to do it while the nurses are checking the chemo drugs. It makes sence.
CK1 Hope your on the mend hopefully you will be sorted and new medication given so you,ll be sorted for christmas I hope you feel a lot better soon.
I,m dreading christmas to be honest, haveing chemo on christmas eve is going to be awlful. It,s going to be me up at some ungodly hour rather than the kids for a change lol !!!
Anyway ladies and Phil hope your all hanging in there and feeling as well as possible take care

Actually reading my post now I might keep it on as it makes some funnyfunny mistakes. Obviously, jellymould you're not celluloid and shazza maybe you are snazzy but I didn't realise it had done that and ck your not co but you are if you add an 'L'.

Made me laugh anyway :). xxxxxx

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

hi all you lovely sparklers!! I' m suffering from steroid head and just can't sleep for hours in the night sometimes. I' 've been making sure I don't take them too late but it doesn't seem to make any difference. It's weird when I've always slept like a log! Ah well - thank God for kindles.

co - how thoroughly bloody awful for you! I' m so sorry you had to go through thatthat - sounds horrendous. Hope you' 're feeling a little better. Make sure you take it really easy and don't do too much. I had an inklinginkling there was a problemishes when you went quiet for a while. Sending you much love.

celluloid - again sorry you' 're down. This whole bloody bc business doesn't half mess with our little baldy heads!!! I hope you' re're picking up mate. It's horrible feeling like that. Have you tried any of the helplines? I know you' 're . a tough cookie but sometimes we can be all too brave about it and then it hits us and they might help a bit ifif you want to vent, etc. take care.

snazzy - they're trying to get me back to speak to surgeon between 4th and fifth chemo. Like you I want to have the time to carefully think through the options as its such an important decision and want it all sorted so there's no delays following end of chemo. Hope your ok and good luck for tomorrow.

Glad to hear some positive stories of little SE's but thinking of those of you not do lucky.Lucy - hope you' 're picking up. I'm up for being a virtual sparkly bridesmaid :))

I' 've had a bit of an emotional day as I got my head shaved. I just couldn' t stand the tenderness any moremore. It was hurting to even rest it on anything. It was getting baldy patches and a parting like the one in the Red Sea - not a hot look!! If this thread was more private, I d post some pics of my hair journey but as its so public, I'm not so sure. It's a bit patchy st the moment which I don't like. I can live with a crew cut or shiny bald but not one that looks like it's been done by a shortsighted barber with blunt scissors!! Not shown it to my little boy yet as he didn't react to my short hair very well, which I was surprised aboutabout as everybody thought it suited me. He' s only 5 though and I suppose he' s used to his mummy with long hair. He said I should put my wig on _ I suppose that's when I look like mummy again. Found that quite hardhard but he' 'll adapt I'm sure. I just need to hide my anxiety and make sure we keep it fun.

Anyway, might try and get some sleep.Take care everybody - love to you all.

Col xxxxxxxxxx ps apologies for typos or any oddities but I seem to have turned on some kind of spell checker on my kindle and it keeps . putting in words it thinks I want instead of the ones I do actually want :)) I'm so rubbish at IT stuff!!

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Hi deeh & SuperSusan,
We do have a helpline number but my throat just caught us on the hop. My OH was near doctors so popped in, by the time he got home I had deteriorated so much that he called hospital and they said to come straight over. The oncology department knew about my throat the previous Friday but as my blood count was OK they decided on going ahead with chemo anyway. The nurse said to take the antibiotics that we are prescribed early if my throat got worse. Even though I started them early it stayed the same for a few days and by Tuesday took off with a vengeance. The broad spectrum antibiotics were just not up for the job at all. I came out of hospital on Thursday pumped full of antibiotics specific to requirements plus another week’s worth of two kinds plus the broad spectrum. Being allergic to penicillin doesn’t help matters.
I do know that I will call the helpline at every cough, sneeze and ache in future ‘cos that was horrible to say the least.
Take care, big hugs CK xxx

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

hi supersusan,
my hair started to come out two weeks to the day after my first treatment. that was last tuesday while i was in hospital. had to hoover pillows a couple of times over weekend. went in shower yesterday and most of it came out then - took ages to clean bathroom . my son bringing clippers tonight to get rid of the last bits.
CK - you make sure you phone helpline whenever u worried thats what they there for. do you take your temp everyday?
im surprised how well im feeling today - waiting for that proverbial bus to come and hit me
take care xxx

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Hi SuperSusan - popping in from the October thread...

I had paxman and my hair started to come out the day before 2nd FEC, my hair felt sore for a couple of days (weird feeling, sore hair) and it has gradually shed since but I had no 4 last week and still have a good albeit thin covering of hair.

Personally 2nd was no worse that first but we are all different and every round is different so hard to say on that, my 5th was due on 20th but I have persuaded onc to bring it forward to 18th to give me a bit more recovery time - he has agreed as long as my bloods are ok on the day.

I have the portacath in my arm and have now had it for 8 weeks and it is still tender on and off but generally ok - took at least three weeks to settle though.

I hope that helps and that you feel ok for Xmas.

Jayne x

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Hi CK,
Sorry to hear about your trauma...glad to hear you're on the way up now! Deeh's advice re: oncology contact is sound. We have the same here where I am and you can leave a message and they will call you back. It certainly saves a trip to the GP and they know what they are talking about.
I have a couple of questions for you other Sparklers....
1. How long after first FEC did your hair start coming out?? I am on day 8 today and am still waiting, though I did use the Paxman so perhaps it will get delayed and I might just have some hair for Christmas.
2. Did anyone find the SEs of second chemo much worse than the first. I am just trying to guage how I might be for Christmas as it looks like my second session will be 20 Dec
3. Does anyone have a port inserted into their chest to take the chemo? If so, is it uncomfortable. I had mine inserted under a general 3 days before my first chemo and the last week since chemo it has felt really uncomfortable and at times verges on the painful side
Keep smiling, and supporting each other; it is so nice to see and read.... x

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

hi ck1
oh god i feel for you - i had exactly the same many years ago and that was bad enough so can just imagine what it was like on top of chemo. hope you feeling better now. i read what you said about gp giving you throat spray and ive also read what others have said about gp's. where i live and get treatment we have phone numbers for the oncology ward and can contact them 24hrs a day for advice - no need to go to gp. when i had a temp and sore throat last week i phoned them and they got me admitted that night. dont you have the same where you live?
i had my second treatment yesterday - not too bad at moment
all the best xxx

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Hello Sparklers,

Hope you are all coping. I’m day 11 post FEC-T #2 and what a week, feel like my sparkler fizzled out and I couldn’t light it again! Previous tonsillitis came back as quinsy with a vengeance and ended up in hospital having abscess cut & drained (twice). It came on so quickly and really took me by surprise. My system did not have the fight for it at all. I don’t want to scare anyone but if you have any throat infection get it sorted asap and take it seriously. My doctors just gave me a throat spray but by lunchtime same day, Tuesday, ended up in A&E, then had two nights in hospital with intravenous fluids and antibiotics as I couldn’t spit or swallow!!! I’m a pretty tough cookie and I must say that was one of the worst things I’ve ever gone through physically. Am only now starting to feel in some way getting to back to ‘normal’. Haven’t been up for anything at all really. My arms are also black and blue from them trying to get canulas in. Also didn't do number twos for 10 days. Senna & lactulose together kept up all night. Not good and very painful, still not right.

I see there are lots of new posts to catch up on which I’ll get reading asap. Good luck to all you Newbie Sparklers will try to catch with you all over next few days, I’m thinking of you xxx

Hope the rest of you are coping OK will catch up as well asap. Lots of love CK xxx

Come on now where did I leave those matches? xxx

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

just got back from hospital - feeling ok at the moment but know it wont last. had a shower before i went and most of my hair came out, i was covered all over in wet hair, not a good look and it took ages to clean the bath!!! Still its gone now so thats one less thing i have to do now
after the nightmare of the hospital - they were actually running on time but that didnt help me cos had to have anti sickness pill 1 hour before so put my session back by an hour, then 3 attempts to get cannula inserted (not impressed) then nurse announced she hadnt checked my blood results!! Good job they were ok or i think i may have inflicted harm on her - anyway got home to find a letter telling me my claim for ESA gone through and backdated to the day i was diagnosed in Sept, so christmas is back on again - so relieved!!!!
Shazza - i was really impressed with the staff at M&S, they even fitted me in without an appointment, to be fair i didnt actually look at the range, they brought some in for me to try on and the second one i tried on i liked, i just wanted a couple that were comfy to get me over xmas and new year - next year i'll be looking round for something more sexy my next treatment is also due on 27th - should have been xmas day but been put off for two days. as long as all goes well this time at least i will be well for xmas, not really bothered about New Year - for the past 3 years i worked New years day starting at 6am so havent bothered with new year always been in bed for 10 o clock so wont notice the difference this year maybe just feel poorly.
All the best for the next few days to all fellow sparklers xxxxxx

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Hi all,
I'm still in the middle of my 'good' week. Put xmas decs up at weekend and been out for xmas dinner today!
Col123, loved the ditty, thats the sort of luck I would have after a night out! I've just requested an appointment with the plastic surgeon as I know there is a waiting list and I think I will need to lose some weight before they will do anything. I just wanted time to consider options and decide what is best for me, as well as find out what I need to do to prepare. Appointment has come through for the end of January. If I'd waited till after chemo it would just knock everything on by 3 months. Just hope I dont have to lose too much weight as the chemo doesn't seem to have effected my taste buds yet
Mags, glad you are feeling better and getting the fluids up. Keep it going! I'm back on the bottled water ready for Thursday. If I use these I can keep a check on the amount of fluid I am drinking on top of normal coffees and soft drinks.
Lucypenney, com problems must be part and parcel of this merry go round and I'm with you on taking personal responsibility and being proactive. Don't think I'm the most popular patient at my breast clinic too. The way I see it is I don't know what I don't know so I've read a lot of the leaflets on here and asked lots of questions lol I've also spent the last two weeks trying to get copies of letters my consultants have sent to my GP. I asked to be copied into them at the outset but didn't get them. They are arriving slowly now, just waiting for one last lot.
Deeh, I did know about the VAt free bra's. I found my M and S didn't have a great selection in store. They are better on line and if you order them online you get free postage too. I also found one in Matalan for £8 that doesn't seem to be too bad. It has a lace modesty panel too.
Jellymould, sorry you are feeling so rough. I've got 2nd cycle on Thursday so was wondering if the effects would get worse each time. My 3rd one should be 27th so i might not havre too good a new year. Hope there is something decent on telly!
Keep strong and carry on sparkling everyone!

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Morning all
hope everyone doing ok today?
off for 2nd FEC today and soooo not looking forward to it. More upset this time as i know what to expect (ahhhh ignorance is bliss ). after spending 3 days in hosp last week and still being poorly when i came home i dont feel as if i have had a break.
anyway on a brighter note had a lovely day with my mom yesterday - went to M&S for new bras and the staff there were brilliant so helpful - did you all know that mastectomy bras are VAT free? Also did some xmas shopping for my grandkids and had a nice coffee and scone.
Good Luck to everyone having treatment over the next few days and hope everyone keeps well.

I have experienced com problems too and have just sourced a second opinion but won't go into detail here. Think it's important we all take responsibility of our treatment and to be proactive as possible to check and ensure we get what we need etc, don't be scared to ask anything!

stella - breast surgeon told me she wanted to see me half way through chemo so we could discuss options and she could also get dates for plastic urgeons involved. As usual I havent heard a peep so planning to chase breast care nurse up about dates. have a friend whose dates are messed up over xmas at same hospital so am noy holding my breath tbh. I think I'm seen ad a bit of anuisance because I wont be fobbed off any more and i like yo know details and i find theyre not keen on that as it just makrs you ask more questions they never have the time for. I have to ring my nurse several times to get anything done. It's not like we're talking about sonething minor but sometimrs i get that impression. I'vebeen througha catalogue of disasters on the communication front. My view is play up if you're not happy. btw, your bionic woman libegave me an idea for a ditty - will.see what i can do. Good luck tomorrow mate.

mags - do.you knpw if you can make .sunday at all.yet?

It's 5.10am and have been awake since 1.30am!!! I just cant sleep. Thank god for my kindle and this place and facebook. I dont mind though as I've not bem sick !!!!!! yet (dont want to tempt fate!!!). I can sleep in the day.

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Evening all sparklers!

Well I can't seem to do these things in a normal way, whatever 'normal' might be. I've got a cough and so they said I had to see a doctor first and we all know how busy they are so I only got back home this evening. He said my throat's also red so probably something going on. If I was post-surgery they'd have thought about delaying the chemo for a bit but, as I'm not and my bloods today were all ok, they've gone ahead. Just need to keep a close eye on my temp so fingers crossed it'll bloody well stay as it should!

Anyway, they gave me what the pharmsist called 'the wonder drug' so the rest of my fingers are crossed that the sickness doen't hit again too. It was 5 hours after first chemo I was sick so I'm clock watching at the moment :). Anyway, when I'm bored waiting for doctors, you know what I write (badly) so here's another.Warning - it's a bit ruder than others ;0.
Lucy - I do feel for you, its just bloody horrible feeling like your identiity is being stolen away from you bit by bit, but you're still a beautiful girl and this f**king cancer might be making you feel as you do now but you'll get back on your feet after all the treatment, it might take some time but I'm sure you'll look in the mirror and see the 'you' you know again and I bet others dont think you look half as bad as you think you do yourself. I think we'll all be changed in some way, that's inevitable I think, but I'm hoping that there's some changes for the better like helping others a bit more, not getting so niggly over little things my little one does, taking the time to play more rather than say 'hang on a sec, I just need to....' and definately appreciating my wonderful friends and family a whole lot more. I know you're a bright girl and so know this yourself already but it is hard to see when we're going through what we're going through. Glad you've called in friends and family if that's what works for you. Remember the helpline on here and on McMillan.take care - am thinking of you sweetie.

I'm sorry for others who feel a bit crap too - love to all and hopefully this'll raise a smile or two......... 😉

Nighty night. Love, Col xx

Her dress was sheer, her shoulders bare,
She looked pretty good except for her hair,
She loved to dance and was a great mover,
Shame most of her hair had gone up the hoover.

She still went clubbing and danced all night,
And with her wig on she looked alright,
She got totally pissed and didn't remember getting home,
And what she thought was a morning stiffy only turned out to be a traffic cone!

I was just wondering if you had any idea as we both to be on the same timescales.
I must admit Ive been really lucky with the first round I,ve not really had any major side effects and have been able to carry on as normal lets hope it lasts.

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Hi all,

finding today incredibly hard And feel like I have lost all sense of focus. I am day 6 post treatment 2, not feeling as good as I did last treatment but turniNg the corner- eating and drinking fine now. I feel much weaker emotionally and physically, I looked in the mirror today and didn't see myself. I am an old lady who look so ill, I have never cried so hard in my life. I feel like the chemo is taking control over my body now.

my brother came to visit today and he is coming back tomorrow. I don't think this is a week to be on my own so I am calling in all friends and family for visits. All of a sudden I am scared of everything and what is going to happen to me next.

i am making a list of managable things to do this week to keep me occupied, starting with a walk tomorrow morning and a tea in hampton court cafe- I live near by. Small steps and one day at a time is what I need to focus on and everything will be fine.

sending my love to everyone and hoping everyone coping ok.

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Hi fellow Sparklers. Have been reading all your posts you all seem to be coping well done to you all. I am on day 11 of first Fec ended up in hospital for a couple of days on day 4 due to severe acid reflux and temp. Seems these steroids have so much to answer for. They help with lots but SE can be crap. Other than that things have gone okay. Do get tired and weepy but that seems to be par for the course.
Hair seems very thin but as Ihad it cut short not noticed yet whether any fallen out. No doubt one morning it wills be obvious wig is sitting waiting though.
supersusan so glad you are making plans for a trip next year go gal.
col123 hope today has gone well for you.
Keep sparkling mates best wishes to you all. Xxx

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Hi sparklers, new and old big hugs, we are all having our treatment together I hope you are all well, I know you are all being brave and sparkling.
Day 5 second cycle FEC, no sicklness or ulcers this time, just nausea, fatguie and my bones ache but resting well.
Sparklers loosing your hair in chunks was so hurtful for me I had long straight , but I made my brave decision to have it shaved off the wig lady in hospital did this for me, it was for me the best decision, I have a beautiful wig and do not have to go through loosing it in the shower, when I wake up on a morning etc. be brave only you can decide what is best for you, since chemo began it didn't feel like my hair.
Col, ck1. jellymould lucy a big hug from me 🙂 x

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Hi Mags,
I am 5 days past my first chemo, and I started with a sore throat and a bit of a cough yesterday. Not sure why as I don't feel like I have a cold or anything though I do have a bit of a headache....that could be something to do with my lack of sleep with those steroids.
Anyway, I hope you all keep your spirits up. Of course we will all have those odd down moments (especially with things like the hair as I don't think we can ever be fully prepared for that) but at the end of the day this is a hurdle we are having to climb and together we can get there. Me - I'm starting to plan for a big trip to Oz for this itme next year to help celebrate overcoming this situation and being able to move on with the rest of my life! xx

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Well, that was a MISTAKE! Felt good last night so visited a friends party, didn't drink, and mostly sat down, so nothing too strenuous, however stayed up too late - 1am, and WHAM, awful night , couldn't sleep with nausea and stomach pains, growling, and aching, up pacing and rocking to try and ease. And subsequently exhausted today, unable to deal with kids, and mostly spent in bed.
Lesson 1 - REST AND DON'T OVERDO IT even if you're feeling ok or you will feel like you've been hit like a truck for the next 24 hours. Why do I always find out these things the hard way!!!

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

Hi Deeh, Like SLM272 I had thrush at both ends. Took a flucanazole tablet after checking with hospital, brushed my teeth several times a day and used a mouth wash too. Also tried to eat little and often. Dont know why it worked but it did. I'm going to ask Onc for more tablets as they are pricey to buy over the counter.
Hi Gritty, hope you find the thread as helpful as I have.
Mags, hope you get the balance right soon. I had a few problems in that direction but nothing major.
I've spent today putting xmas decorations up. Felt I needed to before 2nd chemo on Thursday. At least the living room will be a bit more interesting when I'm slobbing out on the sofa this time. Even managed to watch a Victoria Wood dvd and actually laughed out loud.

Keep strong and carry on sparkling!

Re: Starting Chemo November 2012

thx guys, feeling very suddenly much better tonight and managed to haul my ass out to see some friends, which helped even more. You're all so supportive and helpful! sounds like some of you are having a bit of a bad time with SE's :-(. Thx for posting chicken soup recipe, I've found eating earthy foods, and keeping my stomach full helps stave off some of the nausea. Once I'm empty it comes back. Hmmmmmm, I think I may be putting weight on during the next few months!! lol. I couldn't eat for the first couple of days, so am pleased to get appetite back.
I think the more we all get out and get fresh air and gently keep moving, the more normal we will all feel. what are you thoughts?
There's five young kids in my house, so finding that a bit tiring!!, but also it's really helping me to not collapse under my duvet and give in! So onwards and upwards!! (and lots of early nights! lol)

Hope you're all hanging in there, and keeping on going. Thinking of you all. xxxx
