Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

I'm still here, but I tend to go on to the surgery forum rather than our old one. How are you getting on?

I had my nipple recon last month which went well, the lipofill was very sore and my legs were in a real state afterwards. It has helped the shape of the boob though so was worth going through it. Apart from you and me and Rattles no one seems to be on our group anymore 😞

Hope you are doing ok.

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Hello, are any of the May 2012 buddies still out there?! just wondering how you are all doing....Xxx

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Hi Kitten-Mad,

Yes, I had 4EC and then 4 taxol first time. Second time I had a combination of carboplatin and docetaxol. Yes, I did lose my hair again. The hair loss was depressing but mainly because it was like 'here we go again' and it is such a visible sign of the treatment. I think for me, the second time was hard because I felt I knew what to expect and I just didnt know if I could do it all again. But I did! My hair grew back more quickly second time. Less curly as well.

In terms of the 'decision', I felt like I didn't have a choice once I knew it was in my lymph nodes but like you, had this sense of doubt in the treatment in case it hadn't worked the first time (I didnt know whether the tumour was a recurrence, or had been there from the first time.) Breast cancer is so unique to each person (for all the wrong reasons!) and it is about trying to work out what you feel is the right thing, but also about your quality of life and coping with the fact that nothing is certain. Like most of us, I have good days and bad.

If there is anything I can share/do to help. Please say.

Re. work - I love work in some ways, and it really helps me mentally, but it is also a huge drain on my energy. I have just been referred to 'Access to Work' so I am hoping they might be able to help me manage better. I really would urge you not to rush, or push yourself too hard, too soon. The only person who loses out is you.

Be thinking of you.

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Thanks Rattles - can I ask did you get totally different drugs for your second lot of chemo? Also did you lose your hair twice as well? and did it grow back differently each time. It is awful that you are still suffering so much with the swelling and it will stop you getting back to normal too - whatever that may be! I hadn't realised you had had your ovaries removed too, you have been through far too much - it is quite unfair. I am going back to work on Monday, dreading getting up in the morning and organising myself to get out of the door in time! I am managing to drive ok but stil find reversing very hard so try to avoid it at all costs!

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Hi Em and kitten-mad,

Good to hear from you both and it seems like you are both doing well. Kitten-mad, you probably don't remember but I was going through my second lot of chemo while most of the buddies were on the first. I understand your reservations and it can be a difficult decision (if there is a choice). I had chemo but that is because I had triple negative etc etc You have to do what is right for you but it can be tough when you find yourself in the realms of uncertainty so hope you are doing okay. Take it easy and try and do some nice things before rushing back to work.

I am doing okay- relative to this time last year - good, but a year on I have to say I expected to be alot better. I get very tired and then irritable. The lymphodema (both arms) is a pain and I have a balance problem probably caused by the removal of my ovaries. I think what is hard is that everyone expects so much. If only it did not feel so hard to manage to do what others assume is 'normal' it would really make life alot more fun! At the same time, I am incredibly grateful to be alive and feel I am too luck to complain!

Love to you all.

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Thanks everyone, making a good recovery and being good and doing the exercises even though they are mega painful. still off work, but started driving again. Surgeon was pleased with me, and says I am healing really well, doesn't want to see until end of Jan. Oncologist is pushing for more chemo, but I really don't want more, as it feels as if everything I went through last year was for nothing since it was a recurrence. Surgeon said I could just monitor it for now. Onc took me off the Hormone tablets as well, as she said they were a waste of time. Rather confused by this. Very hard to get facts out of her and she doesn't like me questioning her. Most people must just go in and sign on the dotted line!

Hope you are all well

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Hi Buddies, hope you are all ok. KM I hope you are recovering well - been thinking about you. rattles- hope you are doing well too..... I had my check up with surgeon this week which went well, no problems at the moment. I declined recon for now, can't face any more treatment right now. Getting aches and pains from tamoxifen and trying not to worry about it. Some days feel very positive and then others just feel it's inevitable that it will come back and get me! Love to you all xxxxxx

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Em, so glad to hear your mammogram was okay. Great news.

Kitten-mad- hope you are continuing to recover from your op.

take care, Rattles xxx

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Hi KM, hope you are healing up nicely now. Been thinking of you. I had the results of mammo on remaining boob today which showed nothing to worry about. Got follow up with consultant surgeon at end of this month. Hope all you other buddies are ok... Love Em x

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Thanks Em and Rattles for your support and good wishes. Was very apprehensive yesterday when I went for my shower and saw the extent of the surgery. There is a channel between my back and front linking the blood supply, and  a huge wound on my back. The boob looks a bit high up, but am assured that is normal. Also looks weird without a nipple, although they said I could have one for Christmas. Slept better the 2nd night home, making a complete nest of pillows. Also taking less of the Dihydrocodeine tablets - had to have 5 yesterday but haven't had one since midnight! So I must be making progress, I think I did too much yesterday, just a wee tidy up of the kitchen, on a certain level. But been kept under strict supervision today. Will keep you posted of my progress. Love K M xx

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Hello Kitten-mad,

I have been thinking about you and hope you are as well as you can be - it is early days and you sound as though you are doing ever so well.

Sending lots of cyber support.

Em- hope all good with you.

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Hi KM, so glad your op went well- I was thinking of you earlier on the bus home from work but my stupid iPhone wouldn't let me log on. Take it easy now and rest up- just think all those nasties have gone now! I had skin involvement when I was first diagnosed and was one of the reasons I opted for a mx. Hope you're not too sore for long, love Em x

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Hi Girls - Thought I would keep you up to date. I went in for op last Wed, but because the marks on my breast had got increasingly worse they said I would have to have a Mx with the Dorsi Flap and a small implant. I only knew this 30 mins before going into surgery! I must admit to being a bit weepy but deep down I think I knew that this would happen. So a 5 hour op - with 3 surgeons, one on the back, one on the front and plastic surgeon finished it all off , doing implant and shaping.  The next day felt as if I had been ran over by a bus! Home as of today though and feeling better each day. The new skin is amazing - as my daughter said - it is just as well you never had acne on your back mum! It is a perfect match, and so soft and smooth - and of course nippleless!  He said I can get one for Christmas. So back next Tues for path results and next steps. So looking forward to sleeping in my own bed tonight with my V shaped pillow 😉

I had a private room for the first 2 nights with hourly check ups and my own nurse, then a guy needed the bed so I was moved, to ............. the same room and bed that I had been in April 2012 - it was a weird feeling I can tell you! Hope everyone else is doing well. Love to all

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Hi
Hope you are all doing ok, I haven't been on for ages. I'm now 11 weeks post op, I have healed well and it's all looking good. My new boob is abit bigger than my natural one. I have been offered an implant but I really don't want any more surgery. I'm looking at bras at the moment I could do with one where I can take out the padding one side. Still getting used to how my body looks, have good days and bad days. Trying to look forward but finding it hard not to dwell on what's happened.
Kitten-mad hope you are doing ok.
Take care all

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Jelly, gosh you've been through the mill - so glad all your treatment went well though and you are through it all now, x I will have to have my first mammo after treatment soon in Sept (1 year after my mx) which I'm not looking forward to- all those horrible memories of the breast clinic....I still get floored by fatigue some days which I find hard to explain to family. Nice to hear from Rattles and Alix too- keep up that cycling, sounds great! Hope all goes well for your op Kittenmad, will be thinking of you- my friend who had skin cancer last year had a skin graft on her leg and it was painful but they did keep her topped up with painkillers. She found getting as much fresh air to it as poss helped the healing but not so easy to do with a boob!!! Lots of love to all, Xxx

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Hello Kitten Mad,

I know how much of a shock it is to get such news. You may have to dig deep, but will find a way to be strong through this and get through it, and everyone here will be supporting you. The op sounds daunting, our surgeons do such amazing things...

Sorry I haven't posted much on the thread, although I have tried to keep popping in to keep up with some of the news. A quick update -

In May I had my first surveillance mammo & ultrasound (on WLE scar area). The mammo was clear but U/S found suspicious area close to previous tumour - turned out to be a recurrence. What a shock. Another grade 3 triple negative lump with some surrounding DCIS less that a year on. Although only 13mm, it was and "occult" (i.e. not seen on mammo) which is quite unusual, and scary - I didnt know that could happen. CT scan showed clear elswehere - so chemo did its job last year and this  breast just "unstable". Things happened quickly with a Mx and LD reocn in June. Pleased to report that all went smoothly, 10 weeks on and I have to say the result is fantastic. I also feel much stronger and positive than before the recurrence was found - amazing. I'm due back to work in Sept and this time am much more confident.

So many of us have had ups and downs - lets hope we all get more of the ups.

Love to everyone

Jelly

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Hi KittenMad

So sorry to hear you need another op - but good that you got it checked out so quickly. I had some hypnotherapy from a local cancer charity to help me deal with chemo (I got more needle-phobic with each treatment) and it really helped - I was taught some techniques that helped me feel calmer before and during each chemo. Maybe something similar would help you prepare for the op? Sending love and hugs your way.

Haven't been onto the forum for ages whilst it's been getting sorted out, so only just catching up with everyone's news. Em - well done with the Race for Life, that's fantastic. Quick time too! I've been trying to exercise more, partly to try and keep the weight of (the Tamoxifen makes me eat for England). Yesterday my OH drove me halfway to work and I cycled the rest of the way - about 7 miles. Did the same coming home, and might try to do that once a week.

Love to everyone,

Alix xx

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Hello Kitten Mad,

It has taken me ages to find our thread. I just wanted to send a big cyber-hug of support. I am so sorry you are facing the prospect of another operation and it is only natural it feels scarey. Sometimes I think it is harder when you know what to expect - ie first time round you know it will hurt, but this time you have the memories to overcome. Try and remember what you have already coped with. Remind yourself how strong you are, that you will get through this. If you are worried about pain, make sure you have a plan about managing it.

I am sure we can all help with practical advice a bit nearer- ie loose fitting and comfortable front opening tops etc but for now I am just sending you a big hug.

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Thanks for the messages. Got my final treatment plan this week - it is only surface cells but they are going to remove ALL the skin from the affected breast (same one as before) and replace it with skin from my back. Op next month - and dreading the pain factor afterwards, if anyone has any tips on how to sleep or what to wear on the top half when in hospital I would love to hear them. Trying not to think about it too much - but having great difficulty in removing the marker pen diagram - when I see the extent of the cuts I feel quite sick.

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Hi Kitten Mad, so sorry about your results- b****y cancer! It's good you got it checked out so quickly though. have they decided a treatment plan yet? Sending you lots of love and a big hug, X

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Hi Kitten-mad, just came on to send you a big cyber-hug. What a terrible shock! Squeaky-mouse is so right, it just is not fair.
I can only imagine how you must be feeling and we all know that waiting for tests and results is agony. Remember there are lots of options and you might not need more chemo. As you know, I had chemo again, so hope this will give you some encouragement.
I am just really glad you went to get yourself checked kitten-mad and thank goodness you did not leave it. Its really hard and the only ways to cope are sharing, and as you might remember, doing nice things and generally spoiling yourself silly. Do take good care.

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

So sorry to hear your news, KM, its just not fair after all you have been through. Fingers crossed for the rest of your tests and sending lots of hugs xxxxx

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Got my results back and the cells in the red mark area were cancerous. I feel worse than at my first diagnosis as it seems so soon after a clear mammogram result. Can't believe the little bu**ers have crept back in. BCnurse said I will definitely have to have another op, but not sure about chemo until all my tests have been done. Going for these on Thursday and results next Tuesday. Of course, I can't have any more rads as it is on the same side as before. Will let you know how I get on but at the moment I am in shock, and of course I have just got used to having hair (albeit still curly) but still MINE all the same. Keep your fingers crossed for me. This has sure wrecked my summer good and proper!
Hope everyone else is ok

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Well done Em, I think that is an amazing achievement. I know what you mean about finding feeling poorly. I had a swoon and felt faint, but as I was sitting down at the time, convinced myself it was back and in my brain. Think its the heat though, but still. Kitten mad- am kind of glad they are checking you out, but still it is a worry. I had (another) lump under my arm. It turned out to be a stitch (how did he leave a stitch behing?!) and apparently I will have to have it removed, but it can be done under a local. My surgeon also thinks I should try reconstruction as my right side has been 'ravaged' (his words- sure makes a girl feel good!) by treatment.
Em, congrats on the new job. I find work very tiring, but enjoy it too. Kitten mad- hoping you are on holiday now?
My hair has gone back to being wild so will have to chop it.
Love to all.

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Hi Kitten Mad, sorry you have the worry of biopsy again - I'm sure they are just being extra cautious and covering all the bases but its so stressful waiting for results- lots of distraction techniques needed in next few days!!! my daughter and I managed the race in fairly good time despite it being really hot (me 34mins her 27) I was really proud of her, we didn't raise as much money this year though- people are more generous when they feel sorry for you going through treatment I think!! I will try and post our post race pic...I hope all our other Buddies are well and enjoying the sunshine . We are off to France for a week next Saturday. I also started a new job, within my company, last week which seems a big step as not all my colleagues now know my history which (I think) is good. Another moving on step. I still get the 'worry' well up if I get poorly though (recent tummy bug for example made me think the worst!) but as time passes I feel better about it all and more confident about the future. take care all. Let us know how you get on KM, xxxx

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Emylou - good on you for doing the race for life - how did you cope? I had an appt at the hospital today, said I had fluid on the breast and some cording on the bad arm, she did have a good feel of the breast which was painful but said it felt fine and there were no nodules under the red marks. However, she did bring a consultant in to see them - and he said he thought it was Rads SE's but then proceeded to do a biopsy to be on the safe side. So I am a wee bit worried now and will bave to wait 10 days for the results. Fingers crossed and anyway I am glad I got it checked out. Surely can't be bad when I had my yearly check up a couple of months ago.
Hope everyone is doing ok
K M xx

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Hi Buddies, hope you are all ok and coping with the heat!! Kitten mad I hope you've been able to talk to someone about your red marks to put your mind at rest? My hair is still very curly but I keep getting it trimmed in the hope it will straighten!! Good news squeaky on finishing treatment !! Hope Rattles is ok too? Thinking about how Meercat is ? let us know how you are doing hun if you're still on the forums......I'm doing race for life this weekend- ill be staggering round if it stays this hot! Love to you all, Em X

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

That is great news Squeaky mouse and Merc all your exercising sounds very promising - good for you. I had my hair cut for the second time on friday - it really helped it to be less curly. Think it is due for dyeing again as the roots are coming through grey. My "new" eyelashes are much longer than my "old" ones! Am now on Anastrozole as I couldn't cope with Letrozole - the side effects are more manageable. I still have a lot of pain in my bad breast though - absolutely nowhere near my scar I have also developed weird red marks. Has anyone else experienced this. I am a bit concerned about it and looked out all my booklets to check - it could bea s e of the rads or it seems as if it is also something to look out for in the Breast Aware section too which is very confusing. I think I will give my breast care nurse a ring though to check. Hope both of your reconstructions go well if you decide to go ahead. Merc - I was wondering if the get together ever happening as well.
Hope everyone is coping with this heat - on the plus side at least we are not wearing our wigs which would be pretty awful!

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Yay just had my last Herceptin and had my PICC line taken out!! Thats the end of treatment for me as I am not on tamoxifen. I am now just trying to get an appointment to see about a reconstruction.

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Hey Darling Buds,

Thought I would drop by and see how everyone is doing.

My hair is thicker than it was before cancer, but a lot whiter with even more grey - so I have had it bleached and coloured. It is still tight curls, but as its getting longer, I think the curls are finally starting to relax a bit.

I'm power-walking every lunchtime at work - up to @ 3miles in 53 minutes now - a big difference to when I went back to work - I couldn't even walk from the car park to the office! I managed to get a GP referral to my local gym too - going on average 3 or 4 times a week after work. The pinnacle for me will be doing the Race 4 Life. I wanted to do it last year, but was struggling on the chemo - there was just no way! So this year is to say 'up yours cancer!'

Went for a consultation regarding reconstruction today. A lot to take it. I am going to a BCC information talk next week, so hope to get more informatin then. I'm not convinced either way as to whether or not to have a recon at all, but I would like to be able to make an informed decision.

Dunno about any of you, but I was really choked to find out I can not give blood any more. After using blood in theatre, its something I wanted to be able to give back.

Anyway,

Love to all - missing you guys - did the get together ever happen?

Merc xXx

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Hi Ladies
now 7 days post op, I got home from hospital yesterday.
op went really well, woke up with 4 drains, a bit sore but nothing to bad. Managed to get out of bed day 3. The whole experience wasn't half as bad as I thought it would be didn't even feel the drains being taken out.
was treated at Salisbury hospital, what a great hospital the nurses, ward and plastic surgeon were all lovely and I was treated so well.
so far it looks great I feel battered and bruised, can't wait to see the result in a couple of weeks.
i bought my big knickers from tesco 2 for £8. They are control pants and 2 sizes bigger than my normal size.

i haven't had chance to read past posts but hope all you ladies are doing well.
take care all

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Alix, lovely to hear about your wedding. It sounds beautiful.
Really hope Gillian is doing okay. I had scan this week. Tiny lump which turned out to be fluid-phew! I am doing okay but get exhausted and then lose the power of speech. But, if the world would only wait for me sometimes then I would be very happy to be so well.
Em, Squeaky mouse, hope you are doing well and continuing to recover too.
Thinking of meerkat too. xxxx

Hi everyone
Gillian - hope your pre-op went well; good luck for Friday. I'll be thinking of you buddy.
Haven't been on here for ages - my partner and I had our civil partnership a fortnight ago, so we were caught up in arranging it, and have been on honeymoon in the Outer Hebrides for the past fortnight in our little caravan! We had the best time, the sun shone on the big day and we had a wonderful ceremony and fantastic party. The Outer Hebrides was beautiful, we were blessed with wonderful weather and some of the loveliest beaches I've ever seen. We even went in for a swim (in our wetsuits I hasten to add).
Lovely to catch up with everyone on here, love and hugs to everyone.

Hello Buddies, Rattles I love Portugal, we used to go there alot as father-in-law has a villa there (so cheap holidays!!). Hope you had a great time. We need some serious sunshine here in the UK this summer- long awaited......Alix I was thinking that you must have had your wedding by now - congratulations to you both! I hope you had the best day ever- I love weddings!! Hi KM nice to hear from my fellow curly haired buddies - do you think our hair will ever be straight again?? Gillian i think you are brave for having the recon - i dont think i could go down that route at the moment. I'd still love to meet you all one day.......loads of love Em X

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Just a quick hello to all the buddies from May 2012,
What a difference a year makes? My hair was falling out this time last year and now its back.
Good to hear that some of you are so active. When asked if I do exercise I say, er, I walk' and its upsetting when this is dismissed. I have had five operations in the last 14 months and 4 months so I feel I am doing well. We had a week in Portugal. Em, you are so right sun and fresh air makes a huge difference. I felt so well out there and yet within a week in the cold and grey, feel run down again.
It is still feeling so great not to be having chemo, to taste food and drink water.
I went to the Younger Womens Forum last month. Would recommend it.
Wishing you all good health. Rattles xx

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Tell me about the curly hair 😉 - really should be grateful for any hair but sometimes I feel like an Aborigine!
Argon oil is helping to tame it a bit, but the first time I used I put on far too much! I have had to come off the Letrozole as the back pain was horrible. Am now on Anastrozole and feel great. Was away last week on another school trip abroad and keep pace with everyone - I definitely could not have done that on Letrozole. Hope everyone else is doing well especially Rattles who has been through more than some of us.
Enjoy the summer weather everyone

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Hi Em
i had to have a CT scan just to check my blood vessels in my stomach ready for DIEP recon which will hopefully be in October. im keeping my hair very short at the mo as soon as it starts to grow it grows outwards and still curly.

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Hi buddies, Merc I'm glad you are feeling better and more positive. It's amazing what a difference fresh air and exercise can make. We are all carrying the scars from our experiences last year, whether visible or not but like you I dont want to spend my life dwelling on it or feeling sorry for myself. I was at my daughters swim gala the other day (she got first place in the team relay- yay!!I), and I remembered how I was there last year just after starting chemo, before I lost my hair- it showed my how much I went through last year but here I was still here and enjoying those special moments with my children and I felt incredibly lucky. Gillian I'm glad your mammo came back clear. Is it normal to have a CT scan as well? I've not seen my surgeon since October last year! rattles I am hoping my hair is growing through less curly so keeping it trimmed and short, fingers crossed!!! Love to all, hope you are enjoying the sunshine, Em Xxx

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Oh Emylou and Rattles.....

.....that is music to my ears - to hear I am not the only one. My hair is growing out, not down! Frizzy not longer! Crystaltips and Alistair? The HairBear Bunch? this is cruel. A blue rinse and I can join the pension gang! I look older than my nan ever did!

Still, on a more positive note - I was still struggling to walk, move, climb stairs. I even had a PEEP (Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan) in place at work. I blamed the chemo and tamoxifen. Anyway - I got angry. Why? I am better than this. The cancer didn't beat me, so why on earth should I give in to this?

A friend suggested we went out for a walk one lunch time - just once round the building. I usually have lunch at my desk and continue working. Well - I am now doing 2 miles every lunchtime and have joined the gym under a GP referral programme. I have signed up to do the Race 4 Life, and will not stop there.

I don't know about you guys, but I was on one hell of a downer. I hated (still do) what cancer has done to my body. I think it all hit me at once - we were on a treadmill we couldnt get off at the time, but now - now we have time to think and consider what happened to us. It hit me hard initially, but now I have made positive changes to make me feel better and am loving it.

I'm moving on, gals - and loving it!

Hugs to all the Darling Buds of May.......

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Good to hear from you bikerchic and glad scan results okay. Em, I have same problem with my hair. Granny Perm is ditto for me, though not a trend in the new Grazia magazine (too much time on my hands!)
I saw a herbalist and have started eating ground linseed and flax oil which will apparently ease my aching bones and help with meopausal symptoms. Will let you know how it goes.
I am recovering well but very exhausted. Come on Spring!!
lots of love, xx

Re: Starting Chemo in May 2012

Hi Bikerchic, glad your mammo result was clear- hurray!!! I still have stiff joints which I blame on the Tamoxifen. I try to exercise most days by walking the dog or swimming which helps. I also take vitD3 which helps with calcium absorbtion. I've heard fish oils are good for joints too, so eat lots of mackerel or sardines!! take care, Em ps. Hair still horrendously curly- looks like ive had a granny perm if I don't straighten it every morning......oh well things could be worse(!)
