Re: Starting chemo in September???

Welcome Lulu, so sorry you find yourself here, you really do need a break. I was moaning yesterday about getting it once and thinking it wasn't fair so I dread to think how you feel about it.

Good luck  to Joe43, Gold63 & Pips64. gold sorry  you  had such an awful time yetserday. That was one hell of a day. Your BC nurse sounds wonderful though and I am glad she will be there today for you.

Jo me Kaz and Angie (pendragon) will raise our lattes to you at 12pm!!

Frencyfancy- the boob is sorted- hurray!!

Bonnie I have onc on Monday too.

Just so you know girls my Annabandana order came within 5 days, I didn't even realise it had a 21 day wait!

I keep having bad  dreams that my OH will leave me cos I will put on weight with the chemo and cos I will be bald. We are getting married next year  and he has told me none of the side effects will change how he feels but you know when you just over think things. I hate how this thing makes my mind work in overdrive.

How all  previous dunkers report back in  with minimal SEs xxxx

So sorry to hear you had such a bad day yesterday Gold. I really hope everything goes better for you today. I know there will be lots if virtual hand holding going on. Lots of love to you.
Yes, Frenchfancy it's the Maelor for me too. I use an electric toothbrush but have bought an ordinary soft bristle baby one as well.
Hope everyone has the best day they can. I'm off to take the dog for an early walk. x

Re: Starting chemo in September???

Oh dear Gold63, nearly cried with you when just read about your trauma yesterday. It's bad enough having to have these procedures done anyway without it all going wrong at the same time. I really do hope today goes so much better for you & will be thinking of you , and good luck as well as to Jo & Pips. Let us know you're all ok when the worst of it is over
Big hugs to all this morning (((((X)))))

Re: Starting chemo in September???

Hi Ladies

Well as you can see I am not sleeping too well.

First round of FEC at 9.

Had a bit of a trauma yesterday having line fitted. I have a needle phobia anyway, was booked in at 8.30 in the morning. After waiting to be seen for an hour and I started to get myself worked up for the proceedure and wobbles set in! Canula was fitted, bloods were taken, radioologist visited to discuss proceedure, REALLY wobbly now!

In wheelchair to be taken to theatre then informed bloods needed to be taken again as machine in lab broken down! Then I really lost it and cried like a baby!

Back to day ward (still crying) waiting for more blood letting. This was done, another half hour wait for results, in the meantime was informed my slot had gone! Didn't think I could cry anymore but oh boy I did!

Staff struggling to get another slot later in the afternoon (they are all panicking now as I was a MESS!) I went home with canula in hand and bandage wrapped around it. Back in Christies at 2 (oh yes STILL crying) thankfully line in at 3 and home 6.30. I feel like I have been in a car crash, can't stop shaking - thought of chemo at this moment actually pales into insignificance in comparison with yesterday - hope there are no surprises.

My lovely bc nurse had found out what had happened and came to see me just before the proceedure, she took one look at me and cried as well! Lucky to have her with me tomorrow .

Will let you know how I get on.

Re: Starting chemo in September???

-PTB, from the sound of it we'll be in the same place (Maelor) at different times. You start before me though so can let me know how you get on with everything 🙂 The nurses I saw seemed really nice. I also hear what you were saying about eye drops, can't get them near me either. Will try the spray though, that might work!! Thanks for the heads up.
-And last but not least, Barbs. I will have a 2hr head start on you on 9th by the sound of it. Your list of shopping was great, thanks. As I mentioned earlier, have having a tough time getting to grips with all that needs to be done before we get started. 'Ostrich' 'head' & 'sand' spring to mind. I agree, no wig order means I won't lose my hair. Yeah right, if only!! To be fair I have arranged to go with mum next week to the place that also supplies the hospital. Won't get to see them there until after we get started so thought I would get a look in beforehand. Am way behind on several other things as well & probably too late for some of it. Eyebrows tattooed - will have to give that a miss I think. Would tinting be an option do you think? Also thought about toothbrush. Know we have to be gentle but wondered if you know of anyone who's used a sonic/electric brush? Thought they might be quite gentle on gums and had thought about getting one anyway before we got sucked into this alternate universe. Have taken a look, and thats all, at annabandana but its like I can't bring myself to accept the reason I need to be wearing scarf/hat/etc. is that totally ridiculous or what? Actually, I know it is but doesn't make it easier. I think it's because it will then become obvious to Everyone & Anyone what's happening to me. How vain is that? And I'm really not!!

Hope I haven't missed anyone, and apologies if so.. Will try to get better at visiting here more regularly to see how we are all getting on.

Goodnight to any Night Owls or good morning to any Early birds.
Keep well, stay strong and keep shining . Xx

Re: Starting chemo in September???

-Sam, your boob demon seems to have visited me on a number of occasions as well haha! I had mx so not sure why this is but glad to know imagination not playing tricks. Sounds like something we may have to accept 😞
-BonEllie, so sorry to hear of your recent loss. Can't imagine what you must be feeling not having your 'go to' person to help you through this. Of course we are all now the next best thing hopefully and can be called upon anytime, night or day x
-Nicky49, hopefully drainage has provided much better nights sleep & does not recur too soon (or at all if there's any justice)
-Sarah, PICC line is the way I'm going too. Think may already have mentioned my distinct lack of veins & so glad they agreed with me to do this (goes in 5th Sept)
-Lulu, a big welcome but so sorry to hear you're going through this again. Sounds as though you may be a dab hand (in the worst possible way) at this dunking business. Not good news! x
-Beam67, re-feeling guilty...we should never feel guilty, it's not a choice we've made! I can understand where you're coming from though as it feels like we're responsible for everyone's lives around us having to change as well. Ultimately, they love us, would do anything to not have us go through it but sometimes people just have a difficult time showing this. If you need them, they will be there in a heartbeat I'm sure x

Re: Starting chemo in September???

I know it's late ladies & probably most of you asleep already, but just wanted to check in.
**WARNING** this does go on a way down but didn't want to miss anyone out.
I think I must be going through a 'mini-denial' phase at the minute. Don't get back from our little break until Sunday and just thinking everything can wait til then. I'm certain this will come back & bite me in the bum as there's so much I know I should be doing. It's going to be a crazy week to catch up. Anyway, for where everyone seems to be upto...
-Avonlady, where are you? Really hope you're ok!
-hevg123, glad SE's appear to be minimal right now. Long may that continue x
-Rachel's, hopefully resting up well after your visit to the bar. Let us know how you're doing when you feel upto it x
-Jo43/Gold63/pips64, good luck for your first round tomorrow (was later today when I started writing this!!) thinking of you all x Jo, I think you saw the ward on your Onc visit, so hope its not as scary as you thought x

Evening Stars

Hi lulu like the other stars say thats just crap what you've been through and are continuing to go through such a pain when the drs are on holiday too i've had that a lot throughout waiting for scans, operation and onc appointments we know they need a break too but it doesn't help matters when you just want to get on with things.  Thanks for offering your support we appreciate it and hope we can reciprocate it.

hegv123- Thanks for reporting in, well done you,  hope your se's continue to be minimal and you get a good nights rest.  Keep us posted on your progress.

I too have been browsing the annbandana website for sleep caps and scarves and like you PTB I could buy so many in so many different colours. Will check out the other sites recommended too thanks.

Elma- I've been offered a portacath or picc line too for same reason as others to save veins as mine pretty rubbish to start off with so am going with what they think's best.

Good luck to Pips, Jo and Gold tomorrow sending hugs and hoping your se's are kind too, let us know how you're all doing when you can.

Wig fitting for me tomorrow this could be funny.

Hope you all sleep well stars

Re: Starting chemo in September???

Hello ladies

Elma directed me to your thread.

Im actually a very oldie..... Had ER+ bc in 2006, then TNBC 2009, then TNBC in 2011..... And now have a new tumour in my right lung and affected lung lymph nodes.....

My onc is certain its TNBC secondaries but because of my previous history of ER+ BC and because the new cancer looks more typical of a lung primary but very unlikely (young, female, non-smoker very rarely get lung cancer), they have booked me in for a broncoscopy guided biopsy which is on 12 sept and results should be two weeks later.

Bit disappointed at the wait, which is because both doctors who do this procedure are on holiday for two weeks! Not good.

Anyway i dont know a start date but onc is keen for me to consider TNT which is the triple neg trial...... Which is either carboplatin followed by taxotere or tax followed by carbo.

I have done chemo twice before before.... Had Epi-CMf for primary TNBC then tax and carbo together for recurrence in lymph nodes so i have an idea of what to expect.

Hugs ladies and if i can be of any help just give me a shout.

Re: Starting chemo in September???

Hi, just back from chemo! Feeling fine, all dosed up on anti sickness meds, but I know it's early yet, so we will see. The staff were great, made the whole thing as easy and fun(?) as possible. It was an extra long session, because I had the cold cap. The first 10 minutes were uncomfortable and cold, but after that you forget about it. I kept wondering if it was working properly because it was just not bad at all. Obviously only time will tell if it works, and the cap didn't seem to cover round my ears very well, but I would say to anyone considering it, give it a go and get through the initial cold bit. I took paracetamol before I went, as that was suggested on the forum.

I hope Avonlady is ok and will post soon and I hope today's session went well for Tracey. Good luck to those up tomorrow.

Re the query about having a line fitted, my onc just said I would have a portacath fitted, wasn't really any discussion about it, but I presume as I'm having Herceptin for a year, it saves finding good veins each time.

I'm finding some great (and cheap) headwear on ebay. If you search for 'hijab bonnet' you can find some really cheap caps in all sorts of styles. It seems they are a popular alternative for chemo hair loss as some even market them as "hijab or chemo bonnets"! Also here's some instructions about how to tie a turban so you can also use your own scarves to cover up: http://moohoop.tumblr.com/post/5069305332/beturband

Re: Starting chemo in September???

Hi Elma 55. PICC lines are were recommended to me by the onc and BCNs as it means less wear and tear on your veins - the dose gets to your system quicker, they don't have to keep finding veins (which may get more tricky as treatment goes on), and it reduces/avoids veins getting harder or getting damaged. I think there's pros and cons with all approaches but I was happy to go with their suggestion even though I'm not excited about having an obvious line to look at and look after.

I am having a very lazy day today. Doing a jigsaw and watching TV. Want to start a hobby when having chemo  so am off to teh library tomorro wto see what  books i can find on art journalling.  Hope Avonlady reports back xx

Re: Starting chemo in September???

Just about to order from AnnaBandana and I can't stop choosing. Already picked out sleep caps, fitted jersey and cotton scarves but I cannot decide. There are nine on my list so far. Do I really need this many. Not according to what the Maisie's are telling us it would seem. Better stop looking otherwise I will have bought enough for all the Stars and spares besides!
It would seem the way we are all treated by the NHS varies quite a lot. My onc appt last week lasted about 25 minutes with the oncologist, I got a sneaky peek at the chemo unit, including where the treatment is carried out and I met the lady who helps you sort out your wig. All accompanied by a McMillan nurse. Everyone was really nice and helpful, answering even the most ridiculous of my questions. Btw Barbs my daughter is accompanying me during chemo so I guess your OH will be allowed in.
Pre chemo blood tests for me tomorrow. Plus an eye test which was booked before all this crap happened and then a trip to Ikea. Might as well enjoy the crowds while I still can!
Avonlady, hope you are doing ok.
Elma55. My chemo line is into vein in back of hand, at least I think that's what they said. So much info in my head at the moment I am running out of brain space. God help me next week!
Keep strong ladies, we're moving along now. xx

Re: Starting chemo in September???

Hello Stars

BonEllie and Pips64, we’re all here to share info and support each other over the coming months so welcome aboard!

Nikki, glad you got your seroma drained – Onc isn’t worried about mine either so nature will just have to take it’s course - was told it does go quite hard before it’s reabsorbed into the body so I’ve no need to worry.

Avonlady, hope you’re ok?

Barbs, thanks for the list.  I’m having FEC-T x 6 and will let you have start date as soon as it comes through.

Hazey, thanks for your cyber thoughts!  Like you, had my Onc appointment yesterday - scans all clear apart from a few benign cysts on liver.  Will be on FEC-T followed by rads. Also having pre-chemo Echo heart scan and blood tests.  Good luck with your bone scan today!

Beam67, I feel guilty about all the hassle I’ve caused despite telling myself it’s not my fault.  My son is home from Uni at the moment and was keen to know what was going on through dx and surgery but resumed normal service when I appeared to be ok about a week later (meals were on the table, washing was in the tub etc - what's not normal!) – pretty sure it’s a ‘man thing’ and as others have said, probably a means of coping.  It’s also normal behaviour for them if they’re anything like mine – they think I'm always fussing about something, but I know they love me to bits really! xx

General question to all Stars - still undecided about whether to have a line fitted as my Onc wasn’t very encouraging. Why have so many of you decided to go for a line and was your Onc ok about it?

Thinking of everyone who has to do something this week!  Elma xx

Re: Starting chemo in September???

Jo you are right and I am crap!! Pips is up on Friday with you....need to amend the list!! I didn't get a chemo tour don't know if that's a good thing! Just 5 mins with the Onc signed the consent to be poisoned and got the side effects books, guess ill find the rest when I get there on the 9th eek! Apparently that laimon stuff is available at wait rose and larger tescos does anyone know if its a squash or fizzy? I asked the lovely Maisie's about all the annabandanna stuff they bought, now they are losing their locks (bless them...us next!) which ones were actually the best and they thought they would wear! General consensus is soft hat for house and sleep hat and prob a beanie to go out in! Hope all you stars are ok today lets hope the girls getting their cocktails are ok and that Avonlady is alright after yesterday......WHERE ARE YOU GIRL?? Hope you're safe and sound at home! XxxxBarbs

Re: Starting chemo in September???

Morning Stars,
I've been compiling a list of things to do as I have onc appointment on Monday so that probably means a trip to the bar is imminent within the next 2 weeks, anyway I usually have a flu jab every September.... Has anyone been told to get it/ not get it? I'm thinking with the flu season starting right when our immune systems are gonna be shot to pieces a flu jab would be a good idea.

Re: Starting chemo in September???

Hi Stars,

Good luck Rach andhevg123 who are visiting the bar today- hope it goes well xx

Nikki glad you can now put your arm down. It must be a relief, that was some amount they drew out!

Hi beamy, I see onc next Monday  so should start  the following week but apprently our unit only does chemo for BC on Monday and Wednesdays. So looks like the 101th or 12th for me. As for guilt- hmmmm tricky one-  My boys and step childrne who live with us are still exactly the same as they were before (lazy) but I do  get rather moany at times and then feel guilty for moaning!  However they are all going to be sat down when i have had my onc appointment and told what to expect. Selfishly this is to kick them up their backsides, if you saw the state of my kitchen this morning you would understand. They are going to be told if they cook they must clean up after themselves. They will also be told that there will be things in the house (drinks and biscuits) that  are for me only for if I feel nauseous. Otherwise they will just  eat and drink the lot- they are gannets!

I am totally p***ed off that I have got the flaming disease. I am a good person and do anything I can for  everyone I know so I think it is really unfair.

The Laimon Chezza is on about is lovely, I got it from Tescos but waitrose sells it in cans.

JO43- think I will make some meals next week, I love homemade soup so that will definitely be on the cards for me. What time are you up for your treatment on Friday? I am meeting Kaz and  Angie from the Maisies at about 11 on Friday- we will toast you!!

xx

Re: Starting chemo in September???

Sorry Barb , I must have read it wrong.

Have you not been asked to go in for bloods and chat re- Se"s .... given booklet with emergency contact info ect.... card to carry on you at all times....cold capping option and info.... the list is endless.

We didnt stay in the chemo room long , I think the look on my face told her alot about how I might be feeling and after a brief look around we went into a private room.

I would say.... start to finish .....the whole appointment lasted 1 and a half hours.
