hello all

just to let you know, chemo is do-able.  i am not saying it is fun, but please try not to dwell on posts people make when they are at their lowest.

 i finished fec-t at end april.  i wasnt sick once - i took all drugs as told and was fine

i have 2 young boys aged 5 and 7 and i took  them to school every day and picked them up

i even managed to work some of the time

its very emotional and tough at times but try and make the most of when you feel good

Got the galloping trots went on a drip over nite picking up a day at a time now meds were not changed just a bit tired now .The nurse said it usually only makes your fingers and toes tingle I must have got the Viagra dose ha ha luv Jenny xx

Pas-the-boss - glad to hear everything went well today - I too found the actual experience was far better than what I had been expecting.  It's so good to feel that you have actually started on the chemo "journey" .I hope that you manage to avoid the side effects.

Georgina - you made me laugh about the wig - my hubbie was very hopeful about a lovely long blonde wig until I ruthlessly opted for the short practical bob that just looks like my own hair (except it is styled far better than I  usually achieve). I am trying the cold cap, altho' I know that FECx4 will test it and Tx4 may well get rid of any that has hung on - and so I have been told not to wash my hair more than twice a week just to try and help it survive - you can't blow-dry it or do anything much with it as it will be too fragile. I'm willing to give it a go as I know that even if I lose alot of hair, apparently it will grow back quicker once chemo has finished. 

Deb - It's good to have a start date - try not too worry about it too much if you can - certainly I imagined that the whole dunking thing would be awful and I would be struck down with all manner of SEs, but, touch wood, it has all been straightforward so far.

Hi guys, I'm home and at the moment I'm fine.
After much blubbing to OH on the phone this morning , a couple of hours out with my best pal to chill out, I had a complete meltdown just as my daughter arrived to take me to hospital. Had a real stress head on, but once I got to hospital I was a little calmer but a bit weepy. However you will all be pleased to know that it's not anywhere near as bad as we have all been thinking it is. Cannula went in with no probs. saline drip first while they sort out all your paperwork. Then the swamp juice and all I kept thinking was have some of that Damion and enjoy!! The unit staff were absolutely lovely. Even had tea and bikkies. No foot massage though!
The whole "experience" was under four hours. Long time first off because of all the info they go through and give you. Next time will be shorter as it will just be treatment but they have changed my day to Wednesday next time
(25th). Barbs can you update list please.
Have come home with bag of drugs, anti sickness, steroids and stuff to protect stomach lining, injections which start on Thursday. Decided to have district nurse to do first one then my son is doing them for me. He has lots of experience with needles.
Advice is to drink lots of water to flush system through which I am doing. Cannot believe how quickly Chemo wee starts!! At the moment just feel as though I have had one glass of wine too many and I am developing a slightly odd taste in my mouth. Other than that, keeping fingers crossed, I feel fine. Trying to stay positive but have a feeling this may not last.
Right enough about me. How are all you guys. Hope Tracey and Ally are ok.

Kate I also asked about flu jab today. Definitely have it. Also one for pneumonia if possible.
Sam, so sorry you didn't manage to get away. Just make that the first thing you do once all this c**p is out of the way. We are already planning a family holiday for spring next year to make up for everything we have missed out on! Something to look forward to.
Have appt with wig lady on Thursday. Free of charge wig , can't be bad. Think I'll go for a shortish one to wear when I'm fed up with the long one. Incidentally Georgina it's blonde. Well had my pre-chemo talk today, also had a wig fitting, OH wanted me to try the long blonde wig,   we did laugh. At present I have a bob, more grey than auburn.  So have chosen a longer bob in a almond with hi lites that didn't look too bad.  OH very disappointed his dreams were shattered.

Well stepping up to the bar for my dunking tomorrow at 1:30pm in a ward full of others also hooked to IV drips, think I will take my kindle.   They have given me some anti nausea drugs to take one hour before treatment and then one for the following two days.    Nausea is my nemesis - rather hang onto it than throw it down the toilet.  Anyway heres hoping the tabs will work.    

Golly they really load you with info don't they.   Got CT results - clear - phew.   But bone density showed osteopoenic in lumber and neck regions - I am post menopausal so was sorted of expected.  Will deal with this when all treatment over, have looked up that diet, walking etc can put a halt or at least help with this.  Now I know why I was always in pain after yoga - not my imagination, not me being too fat!  Mind you I have now lost a stone and now weigh in at a svelt 9st 13lbs.  

All my love to those stars doing the IV shuffle tomorrow. Lets hope SE's are minimal.

Hi Everyone

Thanks for welcoming me to the site.  I start chemo 10th September. Nervous to say the least.  My cancer was Grade 2, 50mm, node positive (1/2). Although the consultant has asked that nodes be tested again, as there were two reports which contradicted each other.  ER 95% pos, PR 50% pos, Ki-67 I 1%, HER2 neg.   I was told what all this meant, but some of it has gone out of my head now.  I know the HER neg is a good thing.  I am seeing breast nurse again next week, so will go over the figures again.  She will probably think I'm thick lol.   Still new at all this. No doubt will be as experienced as everyone else in a few weeks.   

As I said, dreading chemo, and worried about side effects.  I am a strong person, so know I will get thr ough it, you have to don't you.  Just the unknown really.  Thought I'd got away with not having to have chemo, as at first treatment was mastectomy, then radiotherapy. However, because of  the node involvement - chemo here we come.

French Fancy and PTB - I’ve now spoken with GP and BCN about over the counter treatments – both say that as chemo is systemic, anything (within reason) required to treat a specific area of the body affected by chemo should be included within the exemption so that’s good news.

Lulu, sorry to hear about the TN trial – we might be swamping together if it’s the last week in September.  Hope your first day back wasn’t too hectic for you. xx

Nikki – good news about your scan results.  Thanks for the line info – I’m still deliberating over which one to go for.  Are you having portacath in chest or under good arm?

Jenny – relieved that you’re back in touch but sorry to hear you’ve had a bumpy ride.  Hope things improve from now on. xx

KatePB – I’ve also been told to have flu jab during week 3 (our ‘good’ week), if I don't get it  before my first cycle starts. Glad things are finally moving – it does make a huge difference. Good luck for tomorrow, will be thinking of you.  xx

Just a quick update. I haven't gone to Greece. I was too scared of getting dvt as I am just less than 4  weeks post ops, also because I have had 3 ops in 8 weeks. I hate this bloody cancer thing for changing how I think about things, I would have just gone prior to this bloody thing! Spent most of the day in tears or close to tears. Haven't answered any calls cos I don't want to talk to anyone. OH went for a kip hours ago, just to get out of my way I think and he is still there. Kids staying out of  My way too. Dad popped to see me earlier and I just cried on him bless him.

Rachel the burgundy book is pay and conditions booklet, not to be messed with obviously!

Nikki I am the same as you regarding about what we put in our bodies. After I had my mirena removed although  I had the normal coil on prescription, I couldn't  bear the thought of having it put in and having something else in my body. Also  I used to drink quite a bit of pop and a fair few coffees a day but now I have 2 coffees and water. Unless I am down the pub obviously!

Hi all

To those asking about flu injection - cannot remember who as I've read so many comments in last 10 mins or so.  I saw my oncol this morning and she said it will be not as effect as normal but have it the week prior to next cycle.  I start my chem tomorrow and was hoping to have had my annual flu jab prior to commencing but my GP practice do not have he vacine yet so will have to wait for the appropriate week. 

After two bad days over the weekend feeling much better now.   I've had my first blood test, seen my oncol again and met my lead nurse.  Feeling as if I'm going somewhere again but also cannot wait until the end of the journey - heres hoping January 2014 and then five years on tablets.  Also praying that I do not have another recurrence.

Hi, had my first dunking last Wednesday,nobody told me about the tingling it reached parts I had forgot about !!!!! Not been great since though S/E spent overnite in hospital on a drip took them 10 goes to get some blood ended up out of my feet getting back to normal? If I will ever be that again !! I had ECMF x8,  11 years ago. The worse thing for me was the nausea. I think the anti sickness drugs are much better now. As well as ginger, pineapple etc I found what worked best for me was soft bread. It sort of soaks up the acidy sicky feeling albeit temporarilly.

Nikki thats awful I read so many reports on how to avoid seromas before my op. eg to exercise straight after the op or to delay, drainage tubes or not etc. So i decided to delay the exercise a bit after the op. (Still not doing it to be  perfectly honest!) Still didnt stop me getting a seroma though! I drained only 160ml, so half your amount. It must be awful for you. Hopefully the antibiotics & aspiration will sort it out once & for all. Try get some sleep whenever you can.

Great news Nikki- I bet that's taken a weight off you mind. Thanks for the flu jab info - I thought I had missed the boat for that but will ask my onc if can have it - one less thing to worry about catching!

Another night of a buzzing mind and a very loudly beating  heart and therefore not much sleep but at least I have talen my last steroid - I wonder if they would let me reduce the dose next time as I have had virtually no nausea ?.

And I have washed my hair for the first time since chemo - such a fantastic feeling to have clean hair, altho' without been able to even blow-dry it it does resemble a mouse's nest!

Evening Stars,
Can't sleep so thought I'd give you all an update re onc appointment & test results.
CT scan was clear 🙂 yay
Chemo to start Tuesday or Wednesday next week - waiting for confirmation, eek it's all getting a bit real now.
Cocktail of choice is 6 x FEC - T
Was given choice of cannula, portacath or picc line - due to ANC I only have one arm that they can use therefore onc advised against cannula. I chose portacath cause once its in that's it, no weekly flushing out, I'm also mildly allergic to those waterproof dressings (I get blisters if on too long). Blood can be take from portacath so no more needles for me 🙂 Apart from the one you have in your tummy 24hrs after chemo, this is for increasing your white blood cells (I think).

Mirena coil - I had one to control heavy periods. He wasn't overly bothered he advised me to leave it be, due to risk of infection plus he didn't want me to have the added complication of heavy bleeding whilst having treatment. He said sometimes chemo can make your periods heavier! Since dx I've become suspicious of everything I put into my body, onc said if I want it out then get it removed one month after chemo ends.

Flu jab - yes have it, he says dont worry if you can't get it done prior to treatment starting, its ok to have it during treatment he recommended 5 days prior to next cycle.

Cold cap - he says the cold caps used at my hospital are particularly good & work for 40% of people, he told me he has a patient with hair down to her backside, on her 4th cycle still with a full head of hair - so I'm gonna give a whirl...nothing ventured nothing gained.

Elma i would ask your Gp to prescribe everything.... In scotland our prescriptions are free but i ask my gp to put everything on even if i can buy it over the counter.

I had an interesting appt with my onc.... We have both figured i dont meet the criteria for the TNT trial so i might be doing EC-T like FEC-T with the F. My biopsy is still due on 12th and results on 20th so may still get chemo before the end of sept.

Back to work tomoz and will tey to go on the BCC secondaries chat group if anybody else has mets i might see you there.

Elma, missed the bit in your posting about prescriptions and I'm definitely with you on if you don't ask you don't get. Luckily as a welsh patient my prescriptions are free but when I asked my GP today about anything I might need his response was just phone the surgery and everything will be sorted. So I take that as anything. It doesn't hurt to ask . I do have a rather lovely , extremely supportive GP though. I'm one of the lucky ones I guess. x

Well surprise surprise rheumatologist dropped bomb shell not only can I no longer take any medication for arthritis the anti tnf treatment I was having cannot be taken by anyone with a diagnosis of cancer for 10 years. 😞 .... Apparently not alk bad news chemo can help arthritis woopee doo lol. Luckily for him he kept his hands to himself although was really looking forward to kicking him. Never mind there's always next time lol xx
Actually feeling a bit better now so hoping it carries on in the future xxx

Had forgotten about Maelor - you must be more north than me!    Yes,  I think Glan Clwyd is the only hospital in N Wales that does radiotherapy.  I'm doing OK this cycle, although was hospitalised last time with neutropenia - good luck with your treatment, hope everything goes as well as....x

What did I say yesterday about going out for the day. You have all been even busier today. Still at least I have had a good day out attempting to put tomorrow out of my mind. Although it did start with an appointment with mt GP. I did ask about the flu jab. He said speak to oncologist tomorrow so not a lot of help really. He did tell me to stop taking my rosuvastatin (cholesterol lowering medication). I have familial high cholesterol and thought that was bad enough to discover aged 42. Oh how wrong you can be! He said there was little point in taking medication if
I am suffering from sickness and going without them for 3 to 4 months wouldn't be a problem. One less thing to thinks about I suppose.
After GP visit and a little retail therapy (not chemo related at all) my son took me out for lunch. Then a little more shopping and a visit to my Grandaughter. All in all I have kept as busy as possible. Still going to take the dog for a walk later and that should just about finish me off for the day! Even tomorrow morning I am going out for morning tea with my best pal. I keep telling everyone to keep busy so I am doing just that.
Frenchfancy, hope your appointment was ok today. No you really don't want a delay in chemo start date. The wait as we keep saying is already long.enough. Btw we actually went to Welsh Mountain Zoo on Sunday as my grandaughter has type 1 diabetes and we felt that chester would be a bit too much for her to handle. There is a lot of ground to cover and she can sometimes get a bit tired so we thought WMZ would be a bit easier on her. I have only managed Chester zoo twice in the 26 years I have lived in north Wales.
Lulu, Thanks for all the tips. I am busy writing everything down. It helps to have all this info to hand. Brain is not funtioning very well at the moment. Hope your onc appt went ok today.

Elma and Jo, not sure when I will see the wig lady but I have bought one already. Outrageous dark blonde even though I am not. Cost me £25 and everyone says it looks like real hair and really suits me. So I suggest you check out some wig sellers you might be pleasantly surprised. I actually prefer it to my own hair but I have got scarves and things on order too.
Big welcome to George and T. You are in safe hands with us lot. Mad as a box of frogs we might be but rest assured you will get all the love and support we can give to help you get through this.

Afternoon all Stars

Just trying to do a list of essentials that I might need before I start, so I don't get left high and dry.  I know that any cancer related prescription meds are free of charge with the NHS Exemption Certificate but does anyone know if this covers 'over the counter' cancer related items like mouthwash, bonjela, oral thrush treatments, aqueous cream etc?  Would a GP issue a prescription for this sort of thing?  I'm working on the basis of 'if you don't ask, you don't get'!

Hi there Stars!!

Welcome to the newbies , sorry forgotten names already as I have serious chemo brain these last 2 days , cant string a blinking sentantance together sometimes. 

In terms of SE"s  ,I think i"m getting away quiet lightly and touch wood it stays that way.

Like many of you, its the sleeping that seems to be a problem.

Had my wig fitting today and really not looking forward to the end result , I look hidious!!....... think it will be hats and head scarves for me . 

Good luck to PTB, Tracey and Ally tomorrow. Remember ladies to follow all the tip for your first dunking and hopefully all will go well 🙂

Seen a couple of posts on here  about Mireena coil....... I had mind removed on advise of my oncol.

FEC-T  -  1st FEC - day 4

Hi Stars - welcome to DTebbs and any other newbies.

Well day 4 now and still feeling fine. Keep waiting for some bad side effects but nothing so far. Did get fed up with not sleeping but took a sleeping pill last night and managed to get a few hours - so feeling much more human today.

Sorry for being stupid Sam , but what are the Burgundy Book rules?
