Smashing, that you got seen quickly, I too thought lymphoedema WAS fluid build up, there doesn't seem to be much consistency around the country where lymphoedema is concerned, postcode lottery again I guess!
Glad your massaging has made a difference to yours Sandra - wish mine would at least look like its working!
I'll look out for you Julie, ill be the one stuffing an oversized breast into a rather small bikini top! Oh yeah, with a lovely tanned square to boot!
I'll be interested to know how the draining goes.
Take care x
Thanks so much for your comments. I have just come back from seeing my surgeon and he said it might be lymphoedema but feels more like a fluid build up. I have got to go and have a scan done on Monday and if it is fluid then they will drain it.I thought lymphoedema was like a fluid build up, so still not really sure.
I am lucky as I have got private cover through my husbands work so at least got seen quickly.
Hi Julie, 10 weeks after I finished rads my boob changed and started feeling weird and swollen and heavy, def was something going on. Gp I saw told me you don't get lymphoedema to breast and said I had mastitus ! He wouldn't refer me to specialist but I nipped my BCN's head sufficently to get my referal, she said it was after effects from rads...... Anyway, was vindicated when the lymphoedema nurse told me that I have lymphoedema to breast, trunk and arm ! Triple whammy. The difference in my boob now after having manual lymphatic drainage and being show how to self massage has been amazing ! Stamp your feet and get a referal, there is a lot of nonsense talked about lymphoedema by so called health care professionals, they just haven't a clue. Good luck.
Haha that made me chuckle. If you see a short haired lobsided person sitting next to you on the beach it could be me!!
Julie, if you find that shop that sells odd cup sized bikinis then let me know! - might be good idea for an apprentice challenge LOL! I'm off on me jollys in Aug too, so going to stuff my swollen side into my usual bikini top and hope there's no overflow!
Sorry no one else has posted on your topic, guess its not that usual - or those suffering are just 'getting on' with it.
Hope you manage to contact your consultant soon, let me know how you get on, take care x
Hi crazy cat lady,
Looks like I am going to have to ring my consultant then. It wouldn't be so bad if they both swell up! I am off on a long awaited holiday at the end of August so will have to get a bikini with odd sized cups(lol)!
Oh the joys of cancer treatment.
Unfortunately some health care professionals also only think LD affects limbs, but my arm is ok (touching wood/crossing fingers!) I asked my LD nurse does she see many people with it just in the breast, and she says she sees lots of ladies with it!
The tape, is a stretchy, self adhesive, material with channels on the sticky side, apparently, it lifts the skin, therefore allowing the lymph to circulate, it is applied from the swelling and taken over to the opposite armpit, encouraging the lymph to re-direct, or summat like that LOL, I'm sure someone will be along to correct me 🙂 I have to also massage the area, also to encourage the lymph to drain.
You could try taking some painkillers an hour before your mammo, may make it a little less uncomfortable.
Keep in touch, let us know how you get on - there are a few of us with breast LD on the forums, they just don't post that often, good luck, ill be thinking of you x.
Hi Crazy cat lady,
Thanks so much for responding so quickly. I thought lymphoedema only affected your arm!! and what is kinesio tape?
I have got a mammogram booked for next month and it is not until the evening, which is when I am worse 😞
Sorry your having problems, I finished rads Xmas eve, and my bc boob started to swell end of Feb/march, was referred back to clinic by gp in April was told I now have lymphoedema, am currently having the kinesio tape applied by the LD nurse weekly, but im still waiting for it to reduce the swelling. Yes, its painful, achy, heavy, and a damn nuisance!
This is probably not what you wanted to hear, but do contact your BCN, just to check your swelling out - just a warning, I had to have a mammo, and due to swelling and not 6 months from op, it was REALLY painful.
I do hope, yours turns out to be just a blip, and your swelling soon subside, take care x
I finished radiotherapy in April after lumpectomy. axilary clearance and chemo. By the end of every day I seam to swell up,has anyone else had this problem? I also feel really bruised on bones under my arm.
I hope others have gone through this and it has cleared up really quickly!
