WHAT SHOULD I DO

Re: WHAT SHOULD I DO

Hi Edgie I had a preventative double mastectomy and ovaries removed due to a strong family history of breast cancer, my Mum died at 43 when I was 9 and my eldest sisters was also 43, and my next sister was 49. When I was 43 I decided to have the preventative surgery as I felt that I had no choice, I wanted to be around for my daughters weddings....I had a double mastectomy first with no reconstruction, and 3 years later decided that I wanted my boobs back, so I had reconstruction exactly one year ago with becker implants, and I had my ovaries removed last November, and I can honestly say it is the best thing that I have ever done. The relief is emormous. I had the genes test in January of this year and found that I carried the BRCA1 gene, so now I am going to take my 3 daughters to the genetic clinic in April so that we can discuss what can be done for them, they are 21, 18 and 16. I dont regret for one minute what I have had done, my only wish was that I could have spoken to people to get help and advice, I didnt find this site until after I had had my reconstruction done. Enough rambling from me, but if I can help you in any way, please do not hesitate. You have to do what is right for you and for me it was the best thing I have ever done.
Take care
Sandra.

Re: WHAT SHOULD I DO

I have had it HI Edgie,

I have had a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy with immediate reconstruction, it is a decision I dont regret, due to the vast amount of fibroidenomas and cysts I have had in both breasts, My nipples were left intact, so didnt need to get then reconstructed.

I would recommend that you get as much information on the type of reconstruction that you will decide upon, and more importantly the risks that will or may be involved. This will prepare you for anything that many happen, especially if you are having implants.

I got the tissue expander and got it inflated every month for around 6 months, it was inflated using saline injected into a stopper under your arm, you couldnt see mine but you could feel it under the skin, I got implants then when the skin was stretched.

Unfortnately my implants got a severe infection, and i had to get them removed, but am offered other reconstruction, but i chose not to have any more operations, and now wear two stick on prosthesis, and I am more than happy with them, and once they are stuck on I can enjoy life to the full. In fact I feel like Jordan when I wear them as they are a cup size bigger than my real breasts. My partner loves them too.

it is a tuff decision to make but I looked it - with what do I use them for, do I really need them, they dont stop me driving the car, or getting dressed or partying, they dont stop me from having fun or doing day to day stuff with my family, I dont show them off for my job, so dont need them for that. I mean once they are in your bra and you wear your clothes you still look like any women that have breasts and no-one knows or notices anything different.

This might help but if you need more information of advice we are all here to help you get through this and support you on your choices.
Best wishes.

Re: WHAT SHOULD I DO

Hi Edgie Sorry, I can't help you on this either Edgie - but if you type bilateral into the 'search this site for' (top right) you might find some others who have had this done or who are going through the same. Just reading through some of the topics will give you lots of info, but if you want you can either add a post to bring the subject forward again or add another giving it a title to describe it in a bit more detail - like 'double mastetcomy - advice please'.

Hope this helps you come to what is a very difficult decision to make.

Re: WHAT SHOULD I DO

Hi Edgie

I am sorry I couldnt help you more and I know you must feel lonely about it, what has your doctor advised I took onboard everything that my doctor advised me to do and I am now I am on the mend....

what pictures have you been looking at???......I have had a mastectomy and reconstruction and everyone I have shown it too are amazed at how good it looks and that is only after 5 weeks with a temp implant...when I have my clothes on no one would know that I dont have a normal boob it just looks the same as the other one and I wear low cut tops...I am just 41....

I was scared stiff about it all and sometimes I think a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing sometimes...but in other cases it can be helpful....

I hope everything goes ok for you
