What is a hemotoma?

Hi

i hear people saying they developed a hemotoma after surgery and I’m not really sure what it is. I had a delayed DIEP 2 weeks ago and have a hard lump in the top of my new breast, it doesn’t hurt but feels really solid and was wondering if it could be a hemotoma?

I had my dressings changed yesterday and the nurse seemed a little concerned but said just to keep an eye on it, make sure it didn’t get hot or bigger but didn’t say what it might be.

Dear Glitterbug

a haematoma is basically a clot/collection of blood that happens outside the blood vessels itself

It is often associated with trauma, surgery being one of them, as a bit of bleeding afterwards can happen

Particularly if the wound doesn’t weep you have to wait for the body to resorb it. Sometimes they need to be expelled so your nurse is right to monitor things

hope everything settles down soon

Thank you that makes sense and I suspect that’s what it is. It seems to be a little smaller today so hopefully it’s going in the right direction.
