I complained about the implants the so called top female surgeon put in me, I looked like a porn queen, I HATED my body, all the PS my GP allowed me appointments with refused me the surgery, I went to Antwerp and the PS there was fantastic, brilliant and I did not have to worry about his ego!

I too am looking for a good surgeon in the northwest. Have you made a decision Suzie ? I know we can’t give names but a named hospital would be a great start for me to research surgeons....

Re: Which plastic surgeon for DIEP reconstruction?

Hi heathercora

My operation was at Wythenshaw  and like you I have had some discomfort but this is to be expected and is easily remedied by taking paracetemol/ibuprofen for as long as you feel you need it. I took them regularly and then the period between painkillers grew less and less until I just wasn't taking any.

Three weeks post op is a very short space of time - I was told six weeks pottering about not doing much at all just short walks and the exercises and expect to have full movement and little or no discomfort at 6 months but be prepared for it being anything up to a year for full recovery.

In my case because I had a haematoma it caused all sorts of problems and I eventually ended up needing a TVN machine, regular district nurse visits for dressing changes etc but 10 weeks on from my op - chemo has started - the dressings for my tummy wound are reducing in size as is the wound. But this is an exception plenty of us ladies have these operations and encounter no problems at all.

But as to the actual length of recovery time - how long is a piece of string? be gentle with yourself and only do what you feel able and certainly don't push yourself too much.- better to take an hour to iron a shirt with rest breaks in between and build up your energy and recovery at a pace that suits you.

Look after yourself

Re: Which plastic surgeon for DIEP reconstruction?

Hi Heather,

no my surgery was at Broomfield. I have to say I still feel very tight in the tummy area but I was expecting that.   But I do feel a bit better in general every day so maybe you should contact the specialist nurses at your hospital if you are concerned? Have you been followed up in clinic yet? I saw the physio and nurse on Tuesday. Don't push yourself at all- the physio told me I could start to make a cup of tea for myself but with no more water than for one. I am walking 20 minutes a day and exercising as per the physio instructions but otherwise taking it very easy.

Having said all that positive stuff, last night I had to go back to the hospital as I had a hard swelling above my reconstructed breast. I am going back tomorrow to see one of my surgical team, the doctor I saw last night said it could be fat necrosis or a haematoma. The good news is the flap was not affected so the rest of my breast is fine.

It is truly a rollercoaster! But I am just so pleased my tumours were removed and I am confident my reconstruction has been successful.

Take care

Absolutely agree with jillybee- I am only two weeks post op and only walking 20 minutes a day, the rest of the time I am mostly sitting down! Take it easy and try to enjoy being looked after. I'm not even thinking about driving until at least 6 weeks post op. They will tell you all this at the hospital too. Take care x

Re: Which plastic surgeon for DIEP reconstruction?

Hi, thanks for your advice. My husband has holiday saved from work so should be able to take a decent amount of time off. I also have plenty of offers of help from friends and family too so will definitely ask them. I have two teenage boys who will be able to help with cooking and housework (!). They can also get themselves to and from school. We also have a 9 year old daughter who will need transporting to and from school and her various activities. Can I ask how mobile you were after the operation? How long did it take before you started driving again? I am quite worried that I will overdo it as I am normally very active and struggle to rest if ill!

Thanks for your advice!

Re: Which plastic surgeon for DIEP reconstruction?

Hi, I just had right side mastectomy and DIEP reconstruction with reduction and lift on left side. I have two children and my partner took three weeks off work including half term, so she could visit me in hospital and sort out the kids. I would say that this was great, but as a minimum if your husband can take a week off your once you come home from hospital that is great. It depends how old your kids are and whether you normally collect from school etc. Don't overdo it and don't be embarsssed to ask friends and family to help out. Good luck!

Re: Which plastic surgeon for DIEP reconstruction?

Thanks for all your recommendations. Since posting I have met a lovely plastic surgeon and breast surgeon at Charing Cross. Feel I can trust both of them as they all the time in the world to talk me through the procedure, explained everything clearly and answered all my questions. I'm seeing plastic surgeon again tomorrow and then will be booked in for surgery. Feels quite anxious about it now. I would love to know what your recovery was like. I have 3 kids and am just wondering how long I will be about of action. Husband working out how much time he will need to take off work and recruiting other mums to help out.

Hi Suzie

I had my DIEP flap at the Wythenshaw Hospital by **** - she also works privately according to information that can easily be googled. She is a lovely caring surgeon who takes the time to really talk to her patients and is very clear on giving you information and making sure that you understand what will happen as well as explaining all the risks. A wonderful lady!

I would recommend **** at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead. He's the man other plastic surgeons call in to correct their problems after failed DIEP recons. Very highly regarded.

Re: Which plastic surgeon for DIEP reconstruction?

I had a plastic surgeon but mine does not do private work, my nipple had to come off and the original surgeon asked the plastic surgeon what they would advise and the plastic surgeon ended up doing the whole thing. I am delighted with the result and they will reconstruct a nipple if i want later on.

I would check out the Broomfield hospital in Chelmsford, Essex you will be spoilt for choice! They have a specialist burns and plastic surgery site.

I did not have this chap Mr. **** but I have met several women that have and they all rave about him. He  does private work.

Which plastic surgeon for DIEP reconstruction?

Hi, Just registered on the forum today as I was wondering if there is anyone who has had a DIEP flap following mastectomy. If so, how was it and where did they have it done? I was diagnosed with DCIS in June and had a lumpectomy. Unfortunately, they didn't manage to get all of it and I am now due to have a mastectomy followed by immediate reconstruction (DIEP free flap) on the NHS. Luckily I can go privately with my husband's medical insurance (NHS wait time for plastic surgeon is 6 months...), so am now looking to have it done asap. Just wondering if anyone could advise on who to go with and where. I live a few miles west of London. Any recommendations would be really appreciated! Thanks.
