Will I have to pay to have my eggs frozen?

Will I have to pay to have my eggs frozen?

Will I have to pay to have my eggs frozen? Morning ladies,

I wonder if anyone can help me? I was diagnosed with bc 4 weeks ago and pretty much straight away had a mastectomy. I have my first appt with my oncologist on Apr 30th to discuss my chemo and rads.

My bc nurse has told me to speak to him during this appt about getting some eggs frozen before I start chemo. I have heard that this can be available on the NHS but have also seen on this site that many women have paid for it themselves, about £3000!

Can anybody tell me whether they have managed to get this treatment free, of if I will definately have to fund it all myself?

Many thanks,

Princess18

I visited a fertility clinic when first DX, unfornatley beacuse my tumour was Oestrogen receptive, the consultant did not want to risk it and neither did I ( you have to pump yourself full of hormones, to retreive as many eggs as possible). Had I had it done, it would have been done on the NHS, I think it depends on your status i.e. Do you have children already? If you do, then I think the cost is down to yourself I’m afriad. If not then the NHS should cover it. I think a postcode lottery might also be involved. I’m in Cardiff, I see you have 2 area’s in your profile, one of which is Wales. Speak to your consultant and ask him to refer you and see what the fertility consultant says.

Hi

I have Bupa cover with work, so all my treatment was private. When the Onc spoke to me about harvesting my eggs I was told it would cost around £3000 and I would have to go to a hospital in Birmingham, which is the best in his opinion. Also it would cost around £2000 a go when the time came to implant them!

To be honest I just dont haver that kind of money!

Suzanne

Thanks lisa & Suzanne Hi ladies,

thank you so much for your helpful advice. Like you suzanne, my tumour is hormone receptive so it’s possible that they won’t even want to entertain the idea. I guess me and my boyfriend will have to cross that bridge when we come to it shortly.

Since posting I have had some success. We haven’t started a family yet so hopefully if I can have my eggs harvested then it will be avail to me on the nhs. If all else fails though the RAF have come up trumps, and have agreed to pay for the treatment,

many thanks for your help,

Shropshire lass Hiya,

I was diagnosed in Cornwall but as am from Shrewsbury originally i wanted to move back (husband in the Navy, based at RAF Cosford and they have been brill) for treatment.

I spoke to my BC Nurse who found out that as we already have a child we wouldnt be eligible for fertility treatment on the NHS so she arranged a private appointment for us with a consultant fertility chap at our request. It would have cost us £3000 to have the treatment - we decided against it and as it happens i have remained fertile despite a real beating with the chemo (4 x epi and 4 x CMF).

I am triple neg but they didnt have those results at the time of us seeing the consultant so dont know how much of a difference that all makes.

Good luck.

Just another thing! Although the fertility Specialist was not happy about Harvesting eggs because of my oestrogen responsive status. I think it’s worth mentioning that my periods have continued regular as clockwork throughout my Chemo and first few weeks into Tamoxifen (that’s not to say irregulaity is nessesary bad news). I’ve heard several stories of women going on to have healthy children after treatment. I know I’m a bit younger than you, but if harvesting eggs is not an option for you, don’t looose faith.
All the best, Lisa x

Cheers Lisa & Su Thanks for all your help ladies, you’ve been great!

I shall wait and see whats what with the oncologist and see what he suggests,

Best wishes and hugs to you,

Kelly
