That's brilliant news!

Hope you celebrated tonight!

Re: Worried about recurrence in LD reconstruction

Hi,
Just thought I'd post an update...had ultrasound today and doc didn't see anything suspicious and was not concerned. My Breast doc did a biopsy to confirm - thinks it is scar tissue but wants it confirmed so i dont conme back in 6 months still worried about it.
Very relieved...but will need to wait a week for results to have the last niggling doubt banished. Thanks for your supportive comments.

Re: Worried about recurrence in LD reconstruction

hi Di, i still have nipple tattoos to look forward to! That is planned for the new year! Back sensation thing is wierd but guess i will need to get used to it.

Re: Worried about recurrence in LD reconstruction

Hi Loubel,I had double mx with ld flap recon in aug 2010 and get tightness like being in a vice when I do any physical work and also when cold.If I touch certain areas on my chest I get a tickling sensation in my back, also when I had my nipples tattooed I could feel it in my back, very weird but not painful at all.

Re: Worried about recurrence in LD reconstruction

Hi Revcat, thanks for your post - hopefully tightness is weather-related. I too was told recurrence is rare and when it does happen the lump is near the surface in any remaining breast tissue left attached to the skin. Apparently this means is should be picked up quickly and any cancer should be early stage! Hopefully it is just a bit of fat necrosis!
Interesting that you mention that swimming gives you stiff boob. I've been trying to go swimming three times a week - thought it would be good for my arm/shoulder mobility - maybe not so good after all. Will need to get back into doing daily exercises for arm as I have been a little complacent recently because movement had been so good but is definitely bit tighter now.

Re: Worried about recurrence in LD reconstruction

Hi Loubel, I am another one who had an immediate LD recon and loves it. Diagnosed August 2010, I had chemo first as my tumour was massive and aggressive, then LD recon (without an implant) Feb 2011 and 25 rads Apr/May 2011. Like yourself and DJ, my scars tighten in cold or damp weather, and like you I live in Scotland (west central) so that has been noticeable the last couple of weeks.

I have not experienced the 'touch the front, feel it in the back' effect, though was aware this can happen. I more find that sometimes I do something and feel it in my boob/chest where the muscle has presumably been stitched in place, suggesting my LD muscle has not yet quite forgotten it was once part of my back!! Swimming and walking with pole both give me a stiff boob!!! I still do some stretches daily and have been told to do them 'for life'

I asked about recurrence at one of my check-ups and was told it was rare, and as DJ has said, most likely to be on the scar or at the tumour site. I was lucky (?) in that my tumour was slap bang in the middle and front, so chest wall recurrence is very unlikely. When pressed, they said if it did recur, then they may have to sacrifice the recon, depending on where and how large, but that another one (presumably with an implant) would be possible afterwards...! Hopefully I'll never have to find out.

Hope the u/s goes well and this is soon all behind you.

Re: Worried about recurrence in LD reconstruction

Hi Loubel

A recurrance would be uncommon. I only know of one person who has has a recurrance in an LD flap recon - she didn't lose the recon - had the lump out and then chemo.

My recon is a bit harder that I would like. I've got an implant as well and so it could be a bit of capsular contraction. My implant has a port in it and so I can be 'let down' a bit if need be or, if it gets too bad, my ps says it's a fairly simple procedure to remove the implant and capsule and put in a new implant.

I don't have the odd sensations, but it doesn't feel 'normal' - I don't think it ever will. I am getting more and more used to it and I'm still very pleased that I have a totally natural looking cleavage and was able to have an immediate recon. Quite a few hospitals don't like it if there's a chance you will need rads. Luckily my team took the alternative view!

Good luck with your u/s.

Re: Worried about recurrence in LD reconstruction

Hi D,
Thanks for your post. Kind of hoping that having had mastectomy, chemo, radiotherapy and tamoxifen the chance of recurrence in reconstruction is slim....fingers and toes crossed anyway.
I hadn't really thought about the cold weather affecting it but if that's the case I'd better get used to the tightness - I live in Scotland!! Think it could be the rads as I think the reconstruction as a whole has got harder - the plastic surgeon did say that Roadiotherapy 'is the gift that keeps on giving' even afte treatment ends!!!
Can I ask....when you touch your reconstruction can you feel it in your back? I can - bit strange - and my plastic surgeon said that this does happen with some people and while the sensation in back might reduce it may be permanent. Just wondered if you did have this if it had settled down at all.
Thanks

Re: Worried about recurrence in LD reconstruction

Hi Loubel
I've had exactly the same treatment as you - I finished in Sept 2011.

Re your lump, hopefully it is just a bit of fat necrosis/scar tissue. Worrying though.

Re the tightness - that sound more like everything settling down after rads to me. Also the cold weather can make everything feel tighter. I think it's importangt to keep doing your exercises - probably forever!

If you are worried, speak to your breast/plastic surgeon.

Good luck.

Worried about recurrence in LD reconstruction

Hi, I’m new to this site and really just want to vent my fears. I’m worried about recurrence in my reconstruction. I had a mastectomy and immediate LD reconstruction, auxiliary node clearance, chemo and radiation late 2011/early 2012 but recently felt a small bump on my reconstruction. I told my breast cancer surgeon and she examined my breast but said it was difficult to assess because of the reconstruction so I have to go for an ultrasound next week. She also said that in all likelihood I will probably need a biopsy. She did say it could be fat necrosis and I am really hoping that is what it is. I had my reconstruction before radiotherapy and I’m sure my plastic surgeon said that fat necrosis was more likely if you have radiation. I’ve also read that recurrence after mastectomy is usually found in the scar or at the original site of the cancer. Mine bump is nowhere near the original cancer site or scar.
Also bit worried about Lymphodema. Reconstruction has been feeling tighter than normal for the last couple of weeks and the tightness goes all the way round to my back from where the muscle was taken. The skin on my chest is also a bit tender but I have no swelling. Could this be truncal lymphodema?
