Re: anyone starting chemo in August?

Morning maisies, or should I say early morning? Just spent ages catching up on yesterday's posts you chatty lot. Welcome to more New ladies including Helen from nz, can't believe we are neatly at 50!
Had to go back to hospital again yesterday. I arrived at the in laws yesterday and MiL noticed my wound leakage had come through to my dress. So it came through 2 dressings, a sports bra and my dress. Went up to the hospital and thought I was going to be sick when she removed all the dressings, even the steri strips came off everything was so saturated. The nurse said maybe I should have had a drain as I sat there waiting for her to redress it and it was still trickling down. Have to go back up to the breast care centre this morning, luckily they gave me an appointment for today in case I had a drain!!
OH also peed me off by going round my wicked step daughters when she still hasn't been near since my diagnosis. Wasn't really cross he went as he wants to see his grandkids( not mine apparently as they have been told by her I am not a proper nanny) but cross cos he would have been all nice to her and not challenged her about her behaviour. He hates confrontation.
He did try to get in my good books by taking me out for lunch which was nice as I didn't have to cook but he isn't getting off that lightly!!
Laying here right now not daring to look at boob in case it's leaked again not sure it could get through all the dressing put on it yesterday though!
Feeling very sorry for myself right now and I still have the flaming chemo and all its joys to look forward to!
Hope others who have been down the last day or two are feeling better and the SEa are minimal for others.
Marketeers go get 'e-mail today. Like someone else said, all for one, one for all. Loving the pooh quote too. Two fabulous sayings for our group. Would like a big group hug right now!

Chat later xx

Re: anyone starting chemo in August?

Hello KiwiHelen,
Welcome to our New World brethren. As ever, sorry to hear that you have qualified for inclusion in the August Maisies by way of undertaking chemo in August. You will find here plenty of chat, discussion, advice plus lots of laughter (we are a mad lot!). I have added you to the list. You are number 49 in our group
Try not to worry about hair loss – what will happen, will happen and it is a visible sign that the chemo is attacking those fast-dividing cells (i.e. mopping up any stray cancer cells too).
Best wishes,
Penn x

Re: anyone starting chemo in August?

Hi there from NZ. I would love to join the August group. I had my operation on June 5 and had my first chemo on the 31st of July and therefore feel more in line with the August ladies. I will have 6 cycles of Fec - T and will follow up with 25 rounds of Radio. My first few days I was nauseous and really had an overwhelmingly metallic taste which was not nice. By the end of day 3 was feeling pretty good and in hindsight I have decided I was a little too confident as I then got a stomach bug that nearly knocked me out altogether. I spent 4 days virtually living in the toilet and even though I feel substantially better now still have waves of diarrhea but on a positive note if I can keep other bugs at bay cycle 2 should be sunstantially easier. Trouble is I have 5 children and there always seems to be someone bringing something home.
I have always had long hair and like many of you decided to get me hair cut short thinking it will be easier to lose short hair than long hair. Today is day 13 and no hair loss yet but from what I've seen from others experience I should be expecting hair loss by the end of the week. I am really dredding this!!

Hello Barbs,
Welcome to the Mad Maisies – you are number 48 in the group that no one wants to belong to as the entry requirement, of chemo, is pretty tough. Here you will find, lots of chat, support, shared experiences and above all, laughter. Prepare for a mad ride!
I’ve added you to the list.

Re: anyone starting chemo in August?

Well I didnt want my weekend to end with my family. Feels ike another huge hurdle ahead and next time I see any of them I will be bald. I remember going to visit my parents before my mx and thinking it would be the last time in the houseI grew up in with 2 tits!! I have some funny thoughts sometimes. This weekend had been planned since the spring and I delayed my chemo for it. I am just glad we all have the wonderful memories that we do now, it was perfect.

Good luck and love to the Muskateers tomorrow and to Katherine, I hope your stay isnt too bad.

Dear Spikeyred,
I cannot tell you how much I am in awe of you getting on your bike and going for a 30K cycle. I haven’t been on my bike since my op and am so zonked out I’d be lucky to cycle to the end of the road! Well done you. I was particularly taken with the Christopher Robin saying: to Pooh, " you are braver than you believe and stronger than you seem".
Cheryl, I have updated you to the Dixie Chicks.
To our Three Musketeers (Ruth, Christine and BWS Katherine) up at the Bar tomorrow – Good luck. It’s a step at a time, but you’ll be okay. I’ll be thinking of you and sending lots of positive vibes. To those of us already in the throws of side effects: lots of hugs and positive vibes to you all too. We can do it? Yes we can!! (Heaven’s I’ve turned into Bob the Builder!)

Thanks for all the tips and advice. This forum is so active it is hard to keep up! I like the Eagles name for those of us starting on the 14th. Have got pre-chemo assessment appointment in the morning and hoping that there will be the chance to ask some questions about this dose dense chemo as it doesn't seem that there are many people having it. Hope you all of my fellow Eagles (or whatever we end up being called) are enjoying their last weekend before this all kicks off. Sarah

Oh u girls do help! Feeling better thanks to your lovely posts and a walk in the sunshine, not good on a bike so I am very admiring, now feel less like lugubrious eyore and more like pooh bear, not quite back to Tigger yet! Annie hope you're a bit better now too? Horrid day 5 or 6 with the comedown after the steroids. Still at least keeping a diary of how you feel each day should help with the next cycle?
Good luck for tomorrow 3 musketeers I hope hospital stay not too awful Katherine. Glad you have had such a lovely pre chemo weekend Gill times to treasure mean so much more to all of us these days.

Re: anyone starting chemo in August?

Thanks Spikey and thanks Christopher Robin! What I needed as well! Hugs to the 3 musketeers and Katherine in particular - hope you manage a quick hug with the kids before you're incarcerated for 4 days. Will be thinking of you all.
Annie: Not sure what day you're on, but bear in mind that you often go into meltdown once you stop taking the steroids. Very normal to feel how you are from day 4 onwards for quite some time. The bit I'm finding hard in 'real life' is everyone going on holiday (OH and kids are off tomorrow for 10 days) and then everyone coming back and saying what a fantastic time they've had. And I'm pleased if I've got as far as the Post Office which is 200 yards away.
Anyway, rant over. Time for another cup of tea
Safe and se free evenings, Maisies. And remember, we are Hobnobs.

Re: anyone starting chemo in August?

Hi all, sorry some of you are feeling rubbish today. I've managed to finally do some exercise today, first time since surgery a month ago. OH and I cycled to pooh corner a round trip of 30k. Stopped off at the Winnie the Pooh coffee shop and had some well earned treacle tart. Whilst having a look around the shop saw a quote that was suited to us,

Christopher Robin saying to Pooh, " you are braver than you believe and stronger than you seem" we just may have to keep reminding ourselves and each other this over the next few months.

Hope all can have restfull evening, thinking of the three musketeers heading to the bar tomorrow. Katherine, hope the stay in hospital is ok and you have some friendly room mates on the ward. Xx

Re: anyone starting chemo in August?

Hi Annie chin up tomorrow start of a new week and a chemo free one for you.
During my silly mind wanderings and analogies I have likened BC to splitting up with someone and have put it into two or three stages depending on treatmant plan:
Stage 1 - surgery where you physically split up with the b**ta*d
Stage 2 - chemo - clearing the b**tards belongings out of your house and getting rid of the final pieces of evidence of cohabiting such as dodgy cds etc
Stage 3 - rads/hormone/ targeted therapy - changing phone number so the b**tard never gets in contact again!!!!
The clearing out is the longest part of the process and sometimes the most painful!!!!

hope this helps
It isnt forever it just bloody seems it at the moment!!!

Re: anyone starting chemo in August?

Hi all, been feeling awful all day, not much sleep last night and thoughts going round and round...

You're right, chemo does mess with your head, but my somach felt really queasy as well which I haven't had until now. Then realised I'd missed a couple of doses of Domperidone, had one quick and almost immediately felt a bit better. That'll teach me not to get complacent and skip meds!

It is the long-termness of this flaming treatment that gets you down isn't it? Also, after surgery you get flowers and cards, and people phoning to see how you are, but with chemo they sort of assume you're just getting on with it, no problem...

Hope everyone else who is/has been feeling down soon picks up, and good luck to everyone at the bar next week. Wig appointment Tuesday - quite looking forward to it.

Lynsey, my worst nightmare would be allergic to horses! Both my mum and sister rode with me today and it was lovely, firt time I have ridden with either of them since I was a child. Definitely the thing memories are made of. Not sure my mum will be able to walk in the morning though...lol xx

Thanks Ju and Cheryl, I think you are right it is the amount of time that is doing my head in. Mx healed well could have been back at work now job done, bye bc but chemo just makes it take so much longer. I know it's wrong to wish away time but I would just like to be through to the other end! Probably just another chemo effect on my poor brain. Will go out with my little dog and see if that banishes the blues. Chat later, how are you feeling Rose? Jac x

Re: anyone starting chemo in August?

thanks - there are a few of us down today its completely normal. Mine hit couple of days after taking the steroids sure its a reaction to all the drugs inside us. All senses felt heightened but not in a good way. Allow yourself to have a cry if thats what you need.
At every step of this nightmare ive thought right thats gotta be the worst over with but chemo is a different ball game as it lasts for six months unlike surgery where if you are lucky its one procedure and then recovery and feeling back to normal in couple of weeks.
chemo messes with your head at same time as physical effects. I just said to someone I found being physically sick last week easier to deal with than feeling panicky and anxious as that feels like a lack of control.
hope everyone else ok
to any of us suffering in silence please know that am thinking of you all and hoping these next couple of days get easier

Yes Chez got shampoo and conditioner in Boots, there were a few types but I went for the special scalp one as that is where our problems lie rather than soon to be non existent hair? Even if it just encourages regrowth at the end it's worth having I thought? Bit fed up today, not ill just down, spose bound to happen at some point. X

Re: anyone starting chemo in August?

Morning all, i'm trying to have a hobnob weekend and make the most of my last pre chemo weekend, had urge to go to the beach yesterday and headed off to Hastings, not the best beach, all pebbles but had a lovely afternoon, fish and chips on the beach but then a million seagulls thought they would help us eat it! Off on a cycle ride shortly to pooh sticks bridge. Chezza I think we are all dreading the hairloss., I seem to have spent hours looking at scarves but can't quite click on the add to cart button yet. I'm told that naked shampoo can help when the scalp is feeling sore. Tylerose hope your aches and pains didn't develop into anything more serious and all other with se are doing ok. Gilly hooe your mum gets on that horse safely, cant wait for the photos.
Thinking about our three musketeers as they gear themselves up for tomorrow, the chemo bar is looking exceptionally buys this week xx

Re: anyone starting chemo in August?

Chezza, honestly the process of actually losing hair is the worst bit, once it's gone it's not so bad, you kind of feel some acceptance if that makes sense? I hated the idea of it, and once bald always avoided looking at myself in the mirror without wig/bandanna, but once it had gone it was more like - well, that's another hurdle crossed on this cancer journey, now I can start looking forward to the day it grows back. And by the way, it grew back beautifully! I normally have dead straight, very fine hair, and these beautiful thick curly locks grew in! Unfortunately it doesn't last and normal service has been resumed, but I loved my new hair! The first haircut afterwards was such a happy milestone!

Gilly, I hear you with the vomiting phobia, you're doing the right thing getting the good anti-nausea drugs straight off, as it is easier to prevent than to control once it's started. I'm planning on asking for the good stuff straight off as well. I did that last time and although I felt nauseous I was never sick after any of five chemo sessions. Even the nausea wasn't so bad after the first one, because when I told them I'd felt sick they let me take one of my anti-sickness tabs earlier than originally prescribed. Wouldn't do that without checking first tho! This was six years ago and different drugs!

Last day of freedom before chemo tomorrow - I'm going round to visit my little nephew and trying to make the most of today.

Re: anyone starting chemo in August?

Hello Maisies All,
This is my attempt to catch up with all your chatty postings over the last couple of days, which I have missed whilst dealing with allergic reaction. Still spaced out on piriton, so apologies in advance for any errors and omissions.
Hello Hotkatz_ingoa, Malforda and Happycats2 – can’t believe that’s another 3 of us! Welcome to our little group. You’ll soon discover that we are a mad bunch, be prepared for lots of chat, useful advice and experience, but also allot of laughter. I’ve added you both to the (not so) “little list”.
Sams – glad to hear that op went well, despite the minor hiccups. You will be relieved to be able to progress with follow-up treatment asap.
GillyR – hope that the ”parentals”’ birthday do went with a swing? Congratulations to them! It is important to celebrate these milestones even when in the midst of chemo.
Venice25 (Gilly) You are entitled to feel overwhelmed with the prospect of what is to come. All the old hands on the site say that chemo is horrible BUT doable and I have taken great comfort from that. It is a question of not expecting too much of yourself and taking a day at a time. We are all taking this journey together and this forum is a great way to grump and laugh together because someone on the forum will know EXACTLY what you are going through.
Rainbowrosie (Janine) I’m sorry that you have decided to leave the forum, but I understand. These things don’t suit everyone all the time. The joy of these informal groups is that you can just dip in and out when you want to, but rest assured that we will be thinking of yu.
Breezy – sorry to hear about your adventures at A&E. Hope you are on the mend now?
GillyR – I will enquire about non-drowsy anti-histamines (good suggestion).
Right, here is the little list. I think that we are now up to 48 members (but will check again as my short list says 47 members). I have kept Rainbowrosie’s name in for the time been, as even if she doesn’t feel able to contribute to the forum at the moment, it is good to know when she is having treatment so that we can think about her.

This is the list of bar groups with known chemo dates, Maisie’s without confirmed dates yet are on the end. Please check that I have correctly unravelled all your dates and group names from the postings. A couple of Bar names to come? Get back to me with corrections.
Happy Sunday everyone!
