Re: dcis does it mean more treatment after bilateral mastectomy?

Hi Wendy,
how are you doing?
My mum had a bilateral mastectomy after her diagnosis of dcis, but this was mainly because of family history (she lost 2 sisters to bc). She only had dcis in one breast but the risk factor was very high, so she opted for this instead. She didn't need any further treatment as her dcis was not invasive (hadn't spread outside the milk ducts). This reduced the risk of recurrence to less than 10%.
Mum was diagnosed in 2003 and is doing fine now. She has been tested for brca1&2 but has so far tested negative. We are both under genetics clinic and I am due to start screening when I am 35 (31 at the moment).
A wle is a wide local excision, which means removing the area of lump/affected tissue with a clear margin around it (as far as I know).

take care

Helpline and Ask the Nurse Hi Wendyc

Sorry that you are feeling confused about further treatments. Often with detailed enquiries like this our helpline can be the best source of information and support.

You can call the helpline on 0808 800 6000
Monday to Friday 9am-5pm and Saturday 9am-2pm.

The team is able to talk about both technical and emotional issues surrounding breast cancer, treatments and breast health.

They can talk through the complexities of different treatments and conditions and I am sure you would be able to answer some of the questions you have.

Breast Cancer Care also has a successful Ask the Nurse Service for which I have posted the link below, they will be able to offer further support and advice:

http://www.breastcancercare.org.uk/content.php?page_id=119

I hope this helps and please carry on posting to the forums as I am sure you will find plenty of help and support here.

Kind regards

dcis does it mean more treatment after bilateral mastectomy? Hi i've been reading some of the posts on dcis and i now feel a little confused! i was dx with dcis in Oct 06 and had Bilateral Mastectomy with immediate recon in Dec 06.I have not seen my Breast Cons since surgery just over 5 weeks ago ( didn't see my B/C nurse until 2 weeks ago- 1st time in about 8 weeks NOT IMPRESSED).Have to say Plastics Con have seen alot since surgery he even gave me my histololgy results.I was told from the beginning that i would probably not need further treatment but i cant understand why i have not seen Breast cons.Although i know that plastics are playing a big part in my life surely the main thing is why i had to have the op for in the first place! By the way i have the brca2 gene.Anyway i have now spoken to a B/C nurse-not the 1 assigned to me and i now have emergency app on tues.So when do you have to have further treatment and when dont you? Does it sound wrong that i have not seen the Breast cons? I'm just worried i've got lost in the system.
ps i'm trying to get used to the abreviations what does wle stand for-sorry to seem a bit thick!
