has anyone had Liver Ablaition (RFA) ? Hi all
I was wondering if anyone out there has had RFA? I’m due to have it on the 6th June and although I’ve researched it loads, I don’t know anyone who has actually had it, I’ve had a few different opinions from different surgeons and I am going ahead with it at the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, recovery time is 2 days, I thought as it was less invasive it would be an in and out job? ANY info from personal experience would be appreciated.
Thanks

i have wondered about that also , do the tumours have to be in one area or can you still have it done if they are scattered?

Hi
I had spots/tumours scattered throughout my liver (gone now - yippee) but I was told that I wasn’t suitable for liver resection etc because cancer was so spread.

Marell(19/1/06) had posts on liver surgery and I am sure that there are others who will post who have had ablation.

I did find this which might be useful, it was the policy of The Royal in London (but I wouldn’t want to swear to it still holding true):

  1. Thermal ablation if tumours are limited in number, under 5cm and accessable, can be done if you have mets elsewhere.

  2. Liver resection done if not suitable for ablation but you must be clear elsewhere.

At least these other approaches are being considered and work for some.

I have… Dear Amber,

I had RFA last year (august) at the Chelsea & Westminster.

I had to stay overnight as I had a general anesthetic and that was the only reason they like to keep you in and you need complete bed rest for 3 hours (Ithink) immediately after proceedure.

The procedure for me was good. I had no pain or discomfort and just a small plaster which covered the incision. When I took it off all that was there was a tiny scratch !!! I did rest for a couple of days after and found it was a little uncomfortable if I did too much but after four days I was back to normal. I did have a sore neck and my elbows felt like they had carpet burns on them but I presume they had to tip/suspend me to get in (through ribs - but not sure).

Its so clever. Hope above helps and good luck,

Love

thanks jetty thats really usefull to know ( I have visions of being hung upside down while they try and get to my tumour, as its in an difficult location IO: !!) glad things went well for you.

Blondie I think all of those criteria’s still have to be met except they will do it now if you have bone mets.

Tracey, I would get a 2nd opinion, I think you live in the Isle of man?? maybe you should take a trip to london, I’ve seen a couple of specialist you can see there names and locations in my profile, there is no way of knowing untill the surgeon has seen your scans as location of the tumour is a big factor.

Good luck all
