Dear Insomniac,

I wish I had a magic wand to sprinkle you with fairy dust to make you sleep.  If it worked, you'd need a handsome Prince to wake you up with a kiss. Oooooo errrrrrrr, Missus.

Re: hrt or biht many years after early grade breast cancer.

Hi Insomniac,

You've tried various things too.

When I tried Zopiclone (only two nights) it didn't work for me. I've never taken sleeping tablets before. I live on my own and was very scared taking it with no one around. Think I was much too anxious for it to make me sleep.

I know of ladies who have also made the decision not to take Tamoxifen or go through radiotherapy when the benefits are quite low percentages. Nothing is a 100% guarantee even for ladies who do have the treatment.

It does sound like you made the right decision for your type and grade of BC.

Take care,

M x

Ps magical moon ...the benefits of me taking tamoxifen for a grade 1 slow growing cancer of pure tubular carcinoma didnt show much statistical benefit ....or radiotherapy ..many people did agree best to keep that armory incase of a reocurrance ..I hope I made the right decision !!

Re: hrt or biht many years after early grade breast cancer.

Thanks mm for your lengthy reply ..ill show it to my gp ...ive tried everything to help me sleep like you !! Even sleeping tablets dont work at all or amytriptaline...I used citrizine on Saturday and I slept like a log but I took it on sunday and never slept at all ..I took it for an allergy but I have taken it in the past for sleep and I remember it works the first night but not the next ...my problem isnt just insomnia ...its quality of sleep ..ive terrible digestion and I think it effects my sleep big time...its the lack of muscle mass ...sex drive thinning hair etc etc..and id love to take biht the supposed safer type just to see if it helps ..Thanks again and best wishes , you x

Re: hrt or biht many years after early grade breast cancer.

Hello Insomniac,

HUGE HUG.......you sound like you need one!

It is terrible when you are sleep deprived, you wake up feeling **** and go to bed hoping to get some some relief. After no sleep happens for a long time everything escalates because you are both physically and mentally drained. Each day becomes an uphill struggle on low batteries.

When I took Tamoxifen I was sleep deprived for four months, so know exactly how you are feeling. It SUCKS big time! Tried everything to get to sleep, hot milk, soothing music, even meditation CD's on my iPod. The meditation CD's did work but only gave me two hours sleep a night. Better than no sleep but not enough to make me feel anything like normal. I switched from Tamoxifen to Anastrozole and now sleep for four hours per night before waking up.

An ER+ score of 4 is worth discussing different options with your GP but they may still want to err on the side of caution before prescribing HRT for you.

The main reasons I couldn't get much sleep on Tamoxifen was because my body was overheating constantly and keeping me awake. Heart racing, night sweats followed by freezing cold skin, dizziness and feeling disorientated.  You've probably got all these symptoms too.

There are medications the doctor can prescribe to reduce the menopausal symptoms before you go down the HRT route. Venlafaxine has already been mentioned. There is also Clonodine and Citalopram you could try.  Your GP could prescribe Zopiclone (for insomnia) just to help you in the short term. It may be worth considering just to break the pattern of sleepless nights.

Sorry if you have tried these options already.

Please take care of yourself and keep knocking on your GP"s door until they find a solution to help you sleep.

Warmest wishes and a good luck cuddle.

It's awful that you are feeling so bad and as you had a mid score of 4 then maybe taking something won't be so risky , must be worth pushing with your doctor as your quality of life is being so badly affected,  are you on any hormone medication ?

I was reffered to the clinic with a lump I found which turned out to be fat and was quickly dismissed, I was given a Mammogram which was clear then during an ultra sound he spotted something he decided to biopsy, it was a benign Fibrodenema but by sheer chance he has pierced through it and picked up some cancer cells lurking on the edge, I was told it would have been years before I noticed a lump or it was picked up on routine screening, I was 46 so wouldn't have been called for 4 years,I agree Mammograms don't detect everything but I'm happy my recent one was clear and knowing I have 4 more annual ones to go is reassuring xx

Hi Insomniac,

When you were diagnosed, were you told your ER+ Alred score which indicates how 'greedy' your particular BC was for feeding off oestrogen? It is worth considering before taking HRT. I think most doctors would be very reluctant to prescribe HRT post BC if your ER+ score was high.

There was a thread on the same topic a month ago you might find interesting.

https://forum.breastcancercare.org.uk/t5/Hormone-therapy/HRT-or-BIHT-after-early-grade/m-p/1005785#M...

I took HRT for 12 years as I went into early menopause at 44 with horrendous symptoms. When diagnosed with BC, I had to stop HRT immediately. My Alred score was ER+8.
For the past 2.5 years my quality of life has been significantly affected by the awful side effects of Anastrozole. I would love to take HRT again to feel FANTASTIC. However, if I was unlucky enough to have a recurrence I would not be able to forgive myself if I had chosen to take HRT again knowing the added risks for me.
It is a very personal choice.

Good luck with whatever choices you make.

Re: hrt or biht many years after early grade breast cancer.

Jo, yes a shock indead ...but don't you worry you will be absolutely fine ..they told me its the best type to have !!!...I actually found a lump in 2002 11 or 12 years earlier in exactly the same place ...I got biopsies and they said it was just calcification ....in 2010 I had a mamogramme and it showed nothing ..just shows you that mammography dosent pick up a small lump ...as this 9mm lump was around for about ten years I think ...how did you find your lump ?...BTW ...hrt is back in vogue and maybe causes 1 extra breast cancer in 1000 people ..but of course its better to er on the side of caution ...

Re: hrt or biht many years after early grade breast cancer.

Hiya, I was diagnosed with Grade 1 Tubular last year and was told from the off that I would never be prescribed HRT in the future,  I'm still Pre menopause and taking Tamoxifen , I also take the anti depressant Venlafaxine which helps greatly with SE and a friend of mine has been put on it to help her through the menopause and she finds its really helping with the flushes, she won't touch HRT now since I was diagnosed, I know you have to have some quality of life too so I guess it's weighing up the pros and cons Xx Jo

hrt or biht many years after early grade breast cancer.

Hello , my problem is I had a slow growing grade 1tubular carcinoma (pure) three years ago removed with very good margins ...I now have terrible menopausal symptoms which are making living unbearable , insomnia total lack of energy etc..id love to try the safest hrt but I have been advised by my doctor that its not on !! I would rather try hrt to see if I feel a lot better and take the risk of a reocurrance ...is anyone else having the same problem or anyone actually taken hrt after having had breast cancer ???
