Re: is there a guideline for reconstruction?

Hi jameva,I had my surgery, the one you want at selly oaks, birmingham, you can get referred wherever you want if you are willing to travel,dr thomas did mine and I am certainly not disabled.go back to your normal gp as it is them that have to refer you i think.

Re: is there a guideline for reconstruction?

My Plastic surgeon says it's every woman's right to have the reconstruction they want if it is suitable for them. She will only perform the Tram where muscle is also used if there is an insufficient blood supply to do a Diep which does not use muscle. You may need to be referred elsewhere to where they have surgeons who have the skills to perform a Diep. This may mean you have to wait longer but it's worth it to get the reconstruction that is right for you.

I don't think there are any guidelines except to say all women who have mastectomies should be offered them and preferably immediate reconstruction. The problem is there aren't enough surgeons.

If you are unhappy with the plastic/breast surgeons you have seen you can ask to be referred to another. You can ask around and find which ones specialise in which operations. the DIEP kind of reconstruction uses tissue from the abdomen but not muscle but it involves microsurgery and isn't suitable for some women e.g. smokers so you really need to do a bit of research and talk to a few breast surgeons I think. where do you live?

is there a guideline for reconstruction?

Hi all

I went to see my Breast Surgeon in February about reconstruction (Mastectomy June 05), he was happy to do reconstruction using back muscle but as i have had 6 children i wanted it from belly as i have plenty to spare but he was not happy about using the abdominal muscle and leaving me with a disability??? as i am only 34 years old. Was sent to see a plstic surgeon but was not happy for her to perform the operation and she wasnt really happy about doing the one i wanted either so rang to make an appointment with Breast Surgeon again and was given an appointment for 6 weeks anyway that was due to be on Monday 23rd June (tomorrow) but received a letter Friday to cancel that appointment and gave me anothere one for 8th September!!!!! Really not happy about this as by the time I actually get a reconstruction it will actually be around a year if not longer from my first appointment. Is there any guidelines about how long to wait for a reconstruction or do i just wait?
