what type of excercise is ok ??

Hi all, I haven’t been on this site for a long, long, long time - it was the 1st anniversary of my op yesterday - full mastectomy and lymph node removal - followed by chemo and radio and now I’m on Femara - doing very very well - feeling so much better than I have done for a long time! Hence the topic- Excercise - I want to get back to some form of ‘fitness’ having done bott-all for over a year - I do walk for half an hour each day with the doggie - but that’s all. I’d like to get in to something - yoga, pilates, swimming - but a) - are any or all of these ok to do? b) - is there anything that you can suggest? c) are there any ‘special’ classes for post mastectomy bods? Thanks a bunch. Pam

Hi Pam

I’ve been going to the gym all through my treatment and even though I still have a few more rads now i’ve got myself a personal trainer. The hospital encouraged me to work out during treatment and gave my personal trainer a list of things I was unable to go to prevent lymphadema (spelling ?).

I also swam until my skin got too sore…

If you go to your local gym they should give you a programme to ease you back in.

Good luck - I feel so much better for going to the gym.

Take care
Foxy

Hi Pam

I am two years on from the mastectomy etc etc. But just recently, haven’t done nothing for ever, I took up yoga. It is great. They don’t make you do anything you can’t do, and it is brilliant for the shoulders and arms. I did tell the teacher about the mastectomy but it really hasn’t been an issue. Not sure about special classes but there is one near me for the elderly, pregnant and beginners. I just do the normal one.

Go for it! Good luck

Hi,

I too started doing yoga during chemo, and it is great. I’m lucky enough to live near a BC Haven and they run specialist classes there.

Now I’m back at work, I’ve just re-joined my gym. I had a one to one session with a trainer, which they did for free as I hadn’t been for so long, told her about the mx and lymphoedaema avoidance. Between us we came up with a revised programme to ease me back into excercise but avoiding lifting any weights or doing any unnecessary arm movements.

I’ve got a feeling Rosemary Conley made an excercise video/DVD for post-BC ladies. It might be worth a google.

Good luck, Bella x

Hi
I had surgery, chemo and radiotherapy a couple of years ago and did pilates classes all the way through. I now feel as fit as I ever have and have decided to have a career change and have almost finished training to be a pilates teacher with the Pilates Foundation. I’d love to find a way that we could run classes specifically for women going through treatment. Maybe Breast Cancer Care could help to sponsor classes. Anybody got any idea about how I could go about organising it?

Hi

Swimming was one of the excercises recomended to me by the physiio post my lumpectomy and lymphnode clearance. Not to start for 4 weeks post op but after 6 weeks as long as ok could even do back stroke and crawl, so I fully intend to do so. Have also asked and been told I can carry on with my horse riding lessons.
So seams to me that as long as we dont do anything stupid then we can do what we enjoy.
All the best

Hi all

There is a good thread on here in the Lymphoedema Category about lymphoedema and swimming, which may be of interest.

Dear All

Our publications team has asked us to let you all know about a new exercise DVD.

You might be interested to know that Breast Cancer Care is currently in the final stages of producing an exercise DVD specially designed for people who have had treatment for breast cancer. The DVD is aimed at helping people regain their arm and shoulder movement after breast surgery and/ or radiotherapy as well as improving their overall fitness.

We have worked with physiotherapists and exercise experts who work with people recovering from breast cancer treatment to produce this. The free DVD will hopefully be available towards the end of August.

With best wishes
Annabel
