It is not possible for us to say what is causing your abdomen to swell a year after your DIEP flap reconstruction.
The advantage of this type of reconstruction is that no muscle is removed so the strength of the abdomen is not usually affected. This means there is very little chance of developing a hernia (a bulge or protrusion where the wall of the abdomen has been weakened). However, there is still a small risk.
If you haven’t already done so you can see your specialist team or GP to have the problem assessed. You may need to be referred back to the plastic surgeon who did your surgery.
