Re: Anti depressants and anastrozole

Hi Rachel

Thanks for posting here.

Many women report menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, palpitations and loss of sleep due to breast cancer treatment and contact us describing the difficulties they are experiencing with them. The frequency and severity of symptoms vary from person to person. For many women they settle over time and become less severe, but for some they may continue to experience them which can really affect their quality of life.

Studies have shown that some antidepressant drugs like fluoxetine can help reduce a number of these symptoms for some women. Although it has been suggested that fluoxetine may interfere with the way tamoxifen works, recent research has suggested that this may not be the case.  As jaybro says, there has been no suggestion that it interferes with anastrozole.

However, for reassurance you may wish to confirm that your treatment team are happy with you taking fluoxetine.  You can do this by contacting your breast care nurse.

You can read about the side effects of fluoxetine in this patient information leaflet.

If the symptoms do not settle, you may want to ask about a referral to specialist menopause clinic where you can get further advice and information about coping with menopausal symptoms.

Talking to someone who has had a similar experience can also be helpful and our Someone Like Me service can arrange for one of our volunteers to talk to you by email or telephone. Our volunteers have had a personal experience of breast cancer and are trained to provide support.

You can ring the Someone Like Me team on 0345 077 1893, or email them someone.likeme@breastcancernow.org so they can then match you to your volunteer.

Do call our free, confidential Helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions.

The number is 0808 800 6000.

Our opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm and 9am -1pm on Saturday. Out of hours you can leave a message and we will call you back when we next open.

Best wishes

Catherine

Re: Anti depressants and anastrozole

Hi Rachel

I’m sorry to hear you’re suffering. If it helps, I was on an SSRI all through my chemotherapy etc and now with anastrozole. No one has suggested there might be contraindications (if that’s the right word). I’m sure your GP would check against your other medication before prescribing. Hope it helps x

Anti depressants and anastrozole

Hi I’m on anastrozole for 3 more years.

my hot flashes and palpitations and feelings of panic and inability to sleep is starting to get me down

my Gp suggested fluoxetine

is this safe to take with anastrozole? ( I heard it makes tamoxifen treatment less effective)

also what side effects might I expect?? Thanks Rachel
