Borderline Results

Hi,

I have recently been diagnosed with a papilloma and am due to have the duct removed. During the conversation with the nurse on the phone she stated that the results from my biopsy were borderline and that the duct needed to be removed and tested. When I asked what borderline meant I didn’t really get a clear answer. I am sure there is a reason for the level of vagueness but was wondering if anyone could explain what this means.

Thanks

Hi mil2206

Thank you for posting about your biopsy result. It is natural for you to have questions. A papilloma is a benign wart-like lump that is found in the ducts of the breast. It is not cancer, but some intraductal papillomas contain abnormal cells which may slightly increase the risk of developing cancer in the future. It sounds as though your biopsy may have shown some abnormal cells which is why it has been described as borderline, but it may be helpful to contact the nurse again to clarify exactly what your biopsy report said.

Papillomas are often removed with surgery and their pathology will then be looked at again to confirm the diagnosis.
