Re: Breast cancer and diabete

Hi Tili

Thank you for posting here.

Many people ask about the risk associated with developing breast cancer.  Currently it is thought that there are many different risk factors involved, the biggest are; being female, getting older and having a significant family history of the disease.

Although there has been some discussion in the news about the link between breast cancer and diabetes, research has not confirmed this for certain. On their website, Diabetes UK report that breast cancer appears more common in post-menopausal women with type 2 diabetes.  However, it is thought this may be linked to women who are overweight.  Being overweight is already a known risk factor for both breast cancer and diabetes.

The risk of breast cancer coming back (recurring) will vary from person to person, depending on the biology of their disease. Lifestyle factors, including weight management, may also influence the risk of breast cancer recurring, so you may find the information in the link helpful to read.

If you are worried about being pre-diabetic and your personal risk of recurrence, do speak with your treatment team or GP.

Do call our free, confidential Helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions. The number is 0808 800 6000.
