Dear Miss Green
Thank you for your email.
No question is silly and it can be unclear if you need to use contraception while on hormone therapy.
It is possible to become pregnant with both tamoxifen and zoladex (goserelin) even though your periods have stopped since 2015. As you’re on both drugs and have received chemotherapy last year, the risk may be very small. As you were still considered pre menopausal in 2018 you may want to discuss this further with your specialist.
If you are sexually active in the meantime, you can use a non-hormonal method of contraception, such as condoms, Femidoms or a diaphragm. It may also be possible to use a coil (IUD or intrauterine device). However, you would need to discuss this with your specialist as not all types are suitable for women with breast cancer.
Do call our free, confidential Helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions. The number is 0808 800 6000.
Our opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm and 9am -1pm on Saturday. Out of hours you can leave a message and we will call you back when we next open.

I finished my chemo in June, had my surgery in July and now just waiting to start radiotherapy. I too am on tamoxifen along with monthly injections of zoladex. I haven’t had a period since April.
I wasn’t sure if I needed contraceptives either has I had heard that I could still fall pregnant. I phoned my doctor who was also unsure and has had to get in touch with my oncologist. Just waiting on hearing back.
I feel silly asking this question as I'm 50 years old and feel I should no the answer.
Do I still need to use contraception? That's presuming I can start sexual relationships again with my boyfriend. Too painful too.
From 2014 to 2017 I was on Tamoxifen (2nd time around with the 1st 5 years being back in 2003. After a 2nd recurrence in my reconstruction I needed chemo again & another WLE in 2018. This has resulted in being given Letrozole & monthly Zoladex injections for the foreseeable future as I was pre menopausal. I've not had a menstrual cycle since March 2015.
