Re: Letrozole & pregnancy

Hi Jules3005

Thanks for posting asking about contraception whilst on letrozole.

Letrozole is a hormone therapy drug used to treat breast cancer in women who have gone through a natural menopause (when periods stop). It can also be used in premenopausal women having ovarian suppression (treatment to stop the ovaries working). You mention that you haven’t had any periods whilst you have been taking letrozole, but that your periods were regular before. It’s not clear from your post if you were given ovarian suppression in addition to letrozole.

If you were considered pre-menopausal when you started taking letrozole you should be advised to use non hormonal form of contraception and not to get pregnant as it may harm a developing baby. Even if your periods stop while you’re taking letrozole you could still get pregnant.

Due to the length of time letrozole is taken and that you are now 53 years old, the side effects of hormone therapy may hide the signs of a natural menopause. It may only be when you finish taking it that you realise you’ve started or been through the menopause.

It may be helpful to talk this through with your GP or treatment team if you are still having follow up appointments.

Do call our Helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions. Your call will be confidential, and the number is free from UK landlines and all mobile networks. The number is 0808 800 6000, (Relay UK -prefix 18001).

If you would like a nurse to call you do complete this form. Ticking the box agreeing to a call back.

Our opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm and 9am -1pm on Saturday. Out of hours you can leave a message and we will call you back when we next open.

Best wishes

Letrozole & pregnancy

Hi. I am 53 and have been on Letrozole for approx 5 years with no periods. Prior to diagnosis, I was still regular. Do I still need to use contraception? Thanks
