Re: MRSA infection and implant loss

Hello Ayla2

Thanks for your post about MRSA and the loss of an implant and further reconstruction.

The loss of a breast followed by a reconstructed breast can be really difficult, both physically and mentally, and making decisions around further surgery after this experience and MRSA make it twice as hard.

I am not sure if you have asked your surgeon if you can have a further reconstruction, but you may want to ask your hospital team what their advice would be regarding further surgery. If necessary, you could ask your GP to refer you for a second opinion to another breast unit. Others here on the Forum may have had experience of reconstruction following an infection that you may find helpful.

It may also be possible to contact the British Association of Plastic and Aesthetic surgeons to see whether they have further information that may be useful.

Talking to someone who has had a similar experience can be helpful and our Someone Like Me service can arrange for one of our volunteers to talk to you by email or telephone. Our volunteers have had a personal experience of breast cancer and are trained to provide support and they may be able to match you to someone who has been through a similar situation.

You can ring the Someone Like Me team on 0345 077 1893, or email them at someone.likeme@breastcancernow.org,so they can then match you to your volunteer.

Do call our Helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions. Your call will be confidential, and the number is free from UK landlines and all mobile networks.

The number is 0808 800 6000 (Text relay prefix 18001).

If you would like a nurse to call you do complete this form. Ticking the box agreeing to a call back.

Our opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm and 9am -1pm on Saturday. Out of hours you can leave a message and we will call you back when we next open.

Best wishes

Rachel

MRSA infection and implant loss

Does anyone know of anyone else who has suffered implant loss following MRSA infection post mastectomy?
does anyone know of any breast surgeon who would attempt reimplantation?
