Re: Patch of sore skin in radiotherapy treatment area

Hi LaceWing

Thanks for posting asking about the insect bites you have around your neck and shoulder area.

As one of the bites has got worse and is red, moist and sore, it’s important to contact your GP to get it checked out and see if it has become infected. If you have a wait to speak to your GP, you could see one of the practice nurses or seek advice from your local pharmacist. They may suggest something that would help.

We offer a range of free supportive services that you might be interested in. Including our resources that are particularly for those who have come to the end of their main hospital treatment. These are known as our Moving forward services and include our  Moving Forward booklet and  Moving Forward courses.

The courses are open to people who have had a primary breast cancer diagnosis and have finished their hospital-based treatment within the last two years.

Do call our Helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions. Your call will be confidential, and the number is free from UK landlines and all mobile networks. The number is 0808 800 6000, (Relay UK -prefix 18001).

If you would like a nurse to call you do complete this form. Ticking the box agreeing to a call back.

Our opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm and 9am -1pm on Saturday. Out of hours you can leave a message and we will call you back when we next open.

Best wishes

Louise

Patch of sore skin in radiotherapy treatment area

I had a mastectomy followed by three weeks of radiotherapy (in August and October last year respectively).  I was scrupulous about skin care at that time and have continued to keep my skin moisturised and out of the sun.  Five days ago, I had some insect bites around my neck and shoulder area.  Most have healed as expected, but one has worsened with a larger area affected.  It is now about the size of a ten pence piece. It looks red and moist. It feels itchy and sore.  Any advice?
