Tamoxifen and face coverings

Re: Tamoxifen and face coverings

Thank you for your post.

It sounds as though you are having a tough time wearing a face mask when you are also having to cope with the side effects from the tamoxifen, especially the hot flushes.  It’s understandable that this is causing you more stress at present.  However, it would appear that tamoxifen is not listed as a general exemption for wearing a face mask

Different regulations exist for wearing face coverings in different parts of the UK  so depending on where you live you may want to check this out.   It seems there is no universal face covering guidance for workplaces because of the variety of work environments, so it would be best to talk to your employer about the difficulties you are having. Staff in some workplaces wear visors rather than face masks depending on the kind of work involved.  If your place of employment has access to occupational health, you can ask for an appointment to be seen. Alternatively, you may want to contact your GP or your treatment team about your situation.

Talking to someone who has experienced side effects while taking Tamoxifen can be helpful and our Someone Like Me service can arrange for one of our volunteers to talk to you by email or telephone. Our volunteers have had a personal experience of breast cancer and are trained to provide support.

You can ring the Someone Like Me team on 0345 077 1893, or email them someone.likeme@breastcancernow.org so they can then match you to your volunteer.

Your GP may also be able to help and you may want to discuss a referral to a specialist menopause clinic.  You can get further advice about coping with menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes at the clinic.

Do call our Helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions. Your call will be confidential, and the number is free from UK landlines and all mobile networks.

The number is 0808 800 6000 (Text relay prefix 18001).

Our opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm and 9am -1pm on Saturday. Out of hours you can leave a message and we will call you back when we next open.

Best wishes

Tamoxifen and face coverings

I work in retail and am on tamoxifen was wondering if we are in a category of exemption for face masks at work.  The only reason I am was wondering is that due to the hot flushes wearing the mask whilst working is very uncomfortable also I wear glasses and obviously being hot is  causing issues with them as well.

I know we need to be careful in these times but I have been working through the whole of the covid 19 period and now having to wear a mask is causing me more stress than before.

Its enough coping with all the side effects of tamoxifen, but just wanted to know if there were any guidelines for us at all?
