Re: To HRT or not to HRT?

Hi MrsSloth

Thanks for posting.  It really sounds like a difficult time for you.

Many women experience significant menopausal symptoms as a result of their treatment but it sounds as though your symptoms are due to your natural menopause rather than treatment.   Although HRT is an effective treatment for menopausal symptoms, it’s not usually recommended for women who have had a diagnosis of breast cancer.  This is because there’s uncertainty about whether HRT increases the risk of breast cancer coming back.  However we know that there are lots of different things that can help with your menopausal symptoms, some you may not yet have tried.

You mention you have an appointment with your GP this week. You may want to ask about a referral to a specialist menopause clinic where you can get further advice and information about coping with menopausal symptoms.  You could ask your GP for a referral back to your hospital based treatment team for further advice about HRT.

Although you have tried acupuncture with limited success, complementary therapies include a wide range of approaches that some women find helpful in relieving menopausal symptoms.

A number of prescription drugs have been shown to help relieve hot flushes and some women find these helpful.  You could discuss this further with your GP.

Talking to other women who have similar symptoms can give you the opportunity to share experiences and get tips on different ways of coping, our Someone Like Me service can arrange for one of our volunteers to talk to you by email or telephone. Our volunteers have had a personal experience of breast cancer and are trained to provide support.

Do call our free, confidential Helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions. The number is 0808 800 6000.

Our opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm and 9am -1pm on Saturday. Out of hours you can leave a message and we will call you back when we next open.

Please be aware that we will close at 12.30pm on Tuesday 24 December, and be open again from 9am on Thursday 2 January 2020

Best wishes

Louise

To HRT or not to HRT?

Hi,

I had breast cancer in 2010 (hormone-negative), and had surgery, chemo, RT and Herceptin. I was 42 then and had the odd hot flush when my periods stopped but now at 51 have been hit full force by horrendous menopause symptoms (all of them, I checked the list, including greasy hair and a hairy chin). The worst is disrupted sleep, I wake every 2 hours, sometimes to go to the loo, sometimes to have a hot flush, sometimes both, sometimes neither. I have been trying acupuncture with limited success but feel dreadful.

My GP wasn't keen to offer HRT, and I'm not keen on the risk, but I'm increasingly becoming desperate. I have another appointment with her this Thursday and I just don't know what to do.

I just want to make these symptoms all go away.
