Delayed radiotherapy

Can you please tell me if a delay in starting radiotherapy beyond 12 weeks after surgery would be detrimental?
I have been taking Tamoxifen for 8 weeks.

Thanks

Hi Mermaid13

Thanks for your post.

We are hearing from many women who are waiting longer than usual for radiotherapy

Delays may happen for  different reasons such as delayed wound healing, seroma, or even the need for more surgery. In some areas it may be due to capacity issues from high demand or staff shortages.  However, we cannot say if waiting longer than 12 weeks will have a detrimental effect.

Delays can cause a lot of worry so do speak to your treatment team to discuss this.  They may be able to explain why there is a delay and reassure you. Do also ask if it’s possible to start radiotherapy sooner (if you don’t already have a date).

If you are concerned about aspects of your care and you live in England, you could contact the hospitals Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) This is a confidential service for patients, their families, and carers. They can help resolve concerns related to health matters, explain, and handle complaints procedures and use feedback to help influence change. PALS work with staff, managers, and if relevant, external organisations to provide support and advice to people concerned about the care they are receiving.

For Wales - you can contact your local health board.
