Re: Waiting for Oncologist mapping

Hi beverln

Thank you for posting.

Having investigations and scans can be a worrying and stressful time especially as you are still waiting for the results following your bone scan. You may want to chase these results and talk to your breast care nurse about how you are feeling.

Making a decision about treatments can be difficult particularly as you have underlying health conditions. The aim of treatment for primary breast cancer is to remove the cancer and reduce the risk of it coming back. It’s good to hear you have had surgery and that you are currently having treatment with anastrozole.

Treatment planning or mapping for radiotherapy helps identify the exact area to be treated and the most effective dose of radiation, while limiting the amount of radiation to surrounding tissues. This is an important part of the treatment.

Nearly everyone who is treated for cancer worries about it spreading or coming back and you’re not alone in being anxious about this. The uncertainty and fear of breast cancer spreading is very real.

You may prefer to talk to someone on a one-to-one basis, Someone Like Me service has over 200 volunteers who have had a personal experience of breast cancer and are trained to provide support. The volunteers are able to talk to you by email or telephone.

Here at Breast Cancer Now we offer a range of free supportive services that you might be interested in. This includes face to face support at a number of locations throughout the country. For more details about all of these services, please see the information on the link.

If you’re concerned with your care being provided by your hospital do talk to a member of the specialist team as soon as possible. You could speak to your breast care nurse who may be able to act on your behalf to resolve any problems you’re experiencing.

As you’re anxious about your results do call our Helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions. Your call will be confidential and the number is free from UK landlines and all mobile networks.

The number is 0808 800 6000 (Text relay prefix 18001).

Our opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm and 9am -1pm on Saturday. Out of hours you can leave a message and we will call you back when we next open.

Best wishes

Grete

Waiting for Oncologist mapping

Hi I am becoming very anxious, I was due to start Radiotherapy today. Clinic phoned Thursday to say cancelled as Oncologist not done mapping. He is due back off holiday tomorrow. I had a mastectomy on 16th Dec 6 nodes taken three positive. They don’t want to operate to do node clearance as I have a pacemaker/defibrillator. Also don’t want to do chemo as have two different cancers in breast/nodes and can only give me certain chemo due to heart and one of the cancers does not respond well to chemo.
Am feeling so anxious that all this delay will mean it is spreading, I have started taking Anastrozole. My treatment options are limited and I just want to give my self the best chance I can.

Have had a body scan to check for spread a month ago and am waiting to hear about bone scan as I have a suspicious area.

I feel as though breast cancer is a lottery depending on hospital. I have been really upbeat until hospital phoned to cancel now I just want to scream☹️☹️
