Breast Calcifications

Re: Breast Calcifications

Hi Sarah24

It sounds as though you are very distressed at hearing that you have some benign (non cancer) breast calcifications, which you were not aware of. It’s understandable that you are worried as you mention your last cancer diagnosis started like this 9 years ago.

Breast calcifications are usually found by chance during a routine screening mammogram (breast x-ray) or during an investigation at a breast clinic for another breast problem. The calcifications show up on a mammogram as small white spots.

If the calcifications look benign, nothing more needs to be done. They don’t need to be removed and won’t cause you any harm.

It’s important that you contact a member of the specialist team again, to talk about how panic stricken this has made you feel, and possibility of getting an appointment with a consultant to talk about your mammogram results in greater detail.

There is nothing you can do about having breast calcifications. Regular screening will check that no other changes occur and being breast aware will help you to report any new changes that you notice.

Do call our free, confidential Helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions. The number is 0808 800 6000.

Our opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm and 9am -1pm on Saturday. Out of hours you can leave a message and we will call you back when we next open.

Breast Calcifications

Hi guys, I am wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction.

9 years ago I had bc in my left breast, after mastectomy, chemo, radiotherapy and hormone therapy and finally a reconstruction which ended 2 years of hospital treatments and surgeries.  I have been discharged by my consultant but have yearly mammograms as I am not yet 50.

Anyway to cut a long story short I had a mammogram back in September and have been chasing the hospital ever since for my results, they are supposed to send me out the results but as usual no letter has been forthcoming.  After many many telephone calls I finally spoke to one of the BC nurses yesterday who was going to chase it up for me.  She rang me this morning to say that everthing was fine BUT I still have the breast calcifications and that they were benign and they were going to keep an eye on them!! That was news to me, no one has mentioned these before and I remember rightly that was how my cancer started 9 years ago.

To say that I am now in panic mode is an understatement, so much so that I can't stop crying and feel like a complete idiot at work (I am working at a different place now to when I had my diagnosis and they have no clue what I went through).

My question is, has anyone else had this/gone throught it?  What can I do to prevent these calcifications turning to cancer cells?

Major panic, I do not want to go through that again, I don't think I'm strong enough this time.

Thank you all
