In the Treatment/Radiotherapy section Zippet xx " first few weeks after ringing that bell "
Hi Paulus
Thank you for that, I felt strange writing what i have to People that do not know me but it has helped me reading about how others are coping. sometimes the fear comes what happens ?? from now on got to go see my surgeon next week Ive got lots of questions
Does any one have any advise for me please
very much apprecated XXX
aww big welcome Zippet,
I stumbled across the Forum, and like you, did the diagnosis, surgery, R/T pretty much isolated from others - kind of 'oh well, I need to to do this for my health, I'll just go with it'.
Since coming on to here, I have learned about others' situations, learned about breast cancer in a way I never even thought about before as it was 'nothing to do with my life' - and there is a warmth amongst women who are all here to let out fears, let off steam, get some advice, and to be with others. You will be glad you bobbled past . . . .
All the best to you x
Hi I am new to this Forum and i finished my Radiotherapy end of July.
I wished i known about the site before, ringing that bell was the best sound you can here
What surprised me was the radiotherapy burn 13 days after i had finished and how the tiredness affected me and how emotional i was, all the way on this journey i have been strong postive but then it hit me, walking has helped me but i do live quite away from the cancer hospital so i have had no contact with others breast cancer suffers so i have felt very alone no groups round me and at the time i felt my cancer was not worth worrying others about, which sound stupid now but because any cancer is worrying, any advise i can say is keep up with the E45 as much as you can and drink plenty
Hello all
Ding dong ... I’m pretty seriously deaf but I swear I could hear those bells !!
Thank you so much, Helena, I’ve said this before but your support is wonderful to all of us, in dread and fear while going through this, and I’m so grateful, as so many many others are...
Dear Lucaboo, I am willing those hours away till Tuesday for you, and you can step off of this hospital travel treadmill and into some sort of normality too! Treat yourself too, yep, a bit - actually a lot ! - of pampering is definitely in order..
And to everyone else, Lilac, Gill, mcnulcc, Paulus, and all.. you are a ring of strength, so privileged to virtually ‘know’ you all...looking forward to posting on the ‘After the Bell’ thread, in the meantime, obeying the drinking and moisturising rules 😉 - pings of pain and itchiness have increased a bit but that’s it really..🤞 ...
Off to boat tomorrow evening, staying over, hope the leaky roof holds up, nothing worse than a water leak on a boat !! 😂
Well done Thistledown, i am so pleased for you!!! You have been a star!. Enjoy your free time now and pamper yourself. I hope you will still be popping on here though to say hello. I am counting down the hours to tuesday i cant wait, it will be the only time i will be skipping into that place i can tell you....might even do a handstand coming out with bell on my head lol ....xxxxx
Thistledown
Whey hey here is your bell rinigng, albeit a little late.
Oh what on earth are you going to do with all that time you get back from not going to the hospital 🙂 🙂
Remember to keep up your regime for the next couple of weeks.
AND FINALLY ,,,,,,,
Hello all
That’s me done, last one...no bell though! (They were interested to hear that other places did that, as they thought it was an American thing ! ) 😉
I’ve suggested that they could get a Ship’s Bell, as the Unit is named after a very famous ship...
They were a lovely lot of people, though, and I did give them a thank you card, I took a leaf out of Appletree’s book (sorry, pun was unintended!) and wrote them a humorous message. Blank card with a luxury spa type massage room picture, saying that ‘these past three weeks were not the deluxe spa treatments I was expecting ...’ but whatever, they got me through it ..!
Thanks Appletree, for the idea...!
So far, no skin breakdown...🤞
Lucaboo, all the best for your last one on Tuesday, and any others coming up too ...
...just edited - well done jclark !, 😊
xx
In and out early today, so much prefer morning appointments !
Last one tomorrow, yay...
Thistle x
Amyjb,
Well done you...😄!! It’s great to be all over with the trek...
Lucaboo,
What a pain there’s still one day left for you, that does drag it out, it’ll be because the machine was broken on your first day won’t it ? Skin still seems to be OK thanks, been using a very light moisturiser called Child’s Farm as I found Aveeno a bit thick, I’ve never suffered from dry skin thank goodness, and never really needed to moisturise like this before ! As I have to moisturise and massage my arm every day because of the lymphoedema, I found the skin sort of ‘dragged’ and felt soggy, so this baby stuff is great, soaks in straightaway and is light...and the Aloe Vera is lovely after treatment. Nice and cool.
My last treatment was on Friday morningbut they’ve pushed the time back to 2pm , ah well..
Xx
Ding ding ding, that's me done! Yay!!
All the best to everyone still going or yet to start xx
Thistledown...Thankyou for the well wishes i cant wait for it to be over on rads, my poor boob is starting to feel it now. I hope your sessions go quickly and your daily trips are no more. Hope your skin is holding up too. When do you finnish your rads??. I should of been finnished friday but ive got one last one to have tuesday because they are closed bank holiday, so its dragged it on a bit. Must say though had to really force myself to go this week. But we are a bit closer to ringing that bell....love and hugs to all xxx
Lucaboo, hope these last few days go swiftly for you, like you I shall be happy not to have to make this daily trek..I know it’s been pretty stressful as you’ve had a long distance to travel and early starts..my times have been all over the place but I’m lucky in that it’s not so far and I’ve been driven each day by hubby...even the car parking has been fairly stress free thank goodness ! (Not his favourite thing...) Yep, the machines are clinically scary and look like something out of a sci-fi movie, and occasionally I’ve lain there wishing they were indeed futuristic and were zapping me with nanobots to kill all nasties and regenerate new cells....🤓, but no, dream on...
The staff, though at this Unit, are not cold and clinical, - fair dos they have to operate this constantly moving conveyer belt of zapping folks, but I’ve watched them, - with wheelchair bound and frail elderlies, treating them with utmost care and compassion, and it made me feel pretty glad to have been treated there too. They are bothered, if you know what I mean, to do things for you, and not dismiss concerns.
So far, skin is holding up,sorry to hear of other’s painful bits and hoping I get away with it 🤞-(my sort of painful area at the mo seems to be at the side under arm...) but am madly drinking water, slapping on cream, and fridge cooled Aloe gel...Polymem at the ready (thank you Helena for the tip, and looking forward to a nice loud Big Ben bell peal on here !)
Returning to a kind of normal still feels a very very long way off, though, and I’m so grateful that I can come on here and be amongst others, yourselves, who know and understand this.
Hope that Chris and Annieapple and other recent finishers are happily taking it easy and enjoying not having this daily grind ! We will be joining them soon, Lucaboo..
xx
Just scanned the more recent replies on this thread - Camilla I'm sorry to hear you are suffering badly too - hope you've managed to have a nice weekend.
No bell to ring in Guildford either...
ok thanks Helena x
it's all pretty hideous, eh!
Niknak
Give your rads team a call and get their advise. When my skin started to break down and my nipple was very sore they gave me polymem dressings which you should be able to get a prescription from your gp, however check with them first.

I finished my sessions last Fri (10th) and suffered some very sore skin underneath and into my armpit, but luckily that has recovered quite quickly. However, the large egg-sized patch from my booster sessions is red raw and weeping in patches - every time I get undressed I take another layer of skin off. I am using Medihoney and Intrasite - I've even tried Sudocrem - not sure whether to put a dressing on it or if that will make it worse! Any tips or suggestions?? TIA
**Sorry meant lumping the bell on someone head lol...bad typo***
Morning all you lovely ladies...i hope all your treatment is going well. I am on my last week of rads, not too bad, ive had a couple meltdowns but eventually got through.
I have to say though ive hated it and i know some people have said they miss the hussle of hospital appointments after its all finnished, but for me personally i cant wait. I am willing myself to get through this last week of cold clinical machines and text book staff and get myelf back into some sort of normal.
It always upstages me every single morning i have to go, my appointments are early morn so it takes me all night to calm down before i go.
So ive got my calender up ready to cross off each day.im not sure ill be ringing the bell, i can think of another gesture id rather be doing on my way out from Cancer treatment.
Anyway, lovelies have a lovely weekend what left of it hugs and love to all xxxxx
Thistledown
Well we will make up for it on here for you xxx
Chris
Well these bells will by the envy of St Pauls I think, congratulations on finishing rads.
Sending you hugs
Helena xxx
Hope you are doing something nice to celebrate xx
Yay, Chris ...well done...
Go and enjoy yourself, and be yourself too.
It’s the last week for me on Monday, no bell to ring in our unit sadly...
Camilla
Oh my dear I am so sorry that you are having a bad time. The other thing to do is to speak to you breasy care nurse and see what she can suggest, they generally are able to get through to people that we cant.
Sending you lots of very gentle hugs
Helena xxx
Thanks for that ladybowler.
I tried the cream the Dr prescribed and took the antibiotics but had such bad and frequent 'runs' that I cldnt leave the house. Have had to stop the antib as cldnt go on like that. The cream was no help and tonight the area is more inflamed with more blistery patches.
Tomorrow I will go back to the hosp. A Macmillan radiotherapy nurse was supposed to phone me from there at 12 today, but she didn't. I do feel that I've just been left to manage this on my own.
Camilla
There is a dressing called polymem which they use for radiotherapy burns, it might be worth asking your rads team if it would be suitable for you to use and then your GP can prescribe it for you. My rads team gave it to me as I was having discomfort under the fold and my nipple although the skin did not break down, however it was really good for creating a barrier between my bra and skin.
xx
I finished rads 3 days ago and am in some discomfort. I have quite large breasts ( had a lumpectomy on the left about 10 wks ago) and have open blisters and peeling in the fold under the breast.
The radiology nurse said don't use creams on the area, just bathe it with salt water, pat dry and cover with a dressing.
I did this but the sores and peeling are spreading so I went to my Dr this morning. She has prescribed antibiotics, a cream to put on and gauze dressings so I'm hoping things will improve. Area is itching and throbbing.
I gave the radiologists a box of petit fours that a local pattiserrie make when rads finished.
I died my hair a couple of weeks ago. No probs.
